MovieAddict247 -> The Empire Christmas Number One (6/11/2012 10:17:34 AM)

I was in Boots the other day, and they were playing Christmas songs - how early, I thought to myself as I looked for shower gel. However, it did give me an idea - a music poll for Christmas music. If I ran it, lists would be in at the end of November, and then the countdown would start in December (obviously) and we'd get to the Christmas number one on Christmas Eve.

It would encompass all forms of Christmas music - from A Ceremony of Carols to Band Aid, Bing Crosby to all the songs from The Muppets Christmas Carol.

So, would there be any interest in this?

Or maybe not [:D]

I'd be up for it. You might want to promote it more though, Audiophile doesn't often seem to get much traffic.

Rhubarb -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 1:27:49 PM)

All I Want For Christmas Is You ftw.

Oh or Joan Jett's version of Little Drummer Boy. Which edges out the super weird Bing and Bowie one. (Fairytale goes without saying).

Awesome.

Obvious winner.

Unless that's The Waitresses it's not.

Was never the biggest fan of that song.

I did just discover Scott Weiland's cover of O Holy Night. Not as good as Cartman's.

I liked this.

superdan -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 2:43:53 PM)

I'd be up for this (2000 Miles ftw). How long are you thinking the lists should be?

Ace. Length-wise, I'm thinking up to 100.

rawlinson -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 2:51:38 PM)

Is Goodbye England by Laura Marling ok for the list?

Yep - it's wintery enough.

rawlinson -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 3:02:45 PM)

So if a song is wintery it's ok? It doesn't have to be about Christmas as such?

Rinc -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 3:08:22 PM)

I'm in

MovieAddict247 -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 3:10:53 PM)

Well, if you look at Stop the Cavalry, they only mention Christmas once and that's always on the Christmas Charts.

I think it does depend on the song though, but I'm inclined to say wintery is fine. The only one I'm currently stuck on is Save My Love by Bruce Springsteen. Lyrically is in no way, at all, in any shape or form, Christmassy. Yet I first heard it at Christmas, and the music, the same way as Stop the Cavalry, has something Christmassy/Wintery about it.

So I'd allow it, because I think the best Christmas music should be about the feel of the season (or something equally schmaltzy) and to me, I hear it, and, to quote the Ghost of Christmas Present, "it feels like Christmas".

rawlinson -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 3:48:43 PM)

You know what song always sounds like it should be a Christmas song? Bad Cover Version.

But for wintery tracks, is California Dreaming allowed?

[:D] That's suprisingly witty! Also, I wish there was a Pulp Christmas Song

California Dreamin' - On a winter's day....sounds wintery to me (yet really, I think it's got a late autumn feel but that's just taking things too far)...

[:D] I really love the idea of Jarvis as a pervy Santa, threatening to leave a little something in everyone's stockings.

impqueen -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 4:47:14 PM)

Stop the Cavalry is brilliant, Christmas is not.

Spaceman Came Travelling FTW! [:D]

elab49 -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 4:52:45 PM)

Thank god it's Xmas, of course.

MA, I'll find a way for you to win a HoF if you either

a. Ban this song

b. Redirect all votes for this song to Tom Waits. [:D]

MonsterCat -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (10/11/2012 11:52:32 PM)

My list of Christmas songs that I like could be written on the back of a postage stamp. Me and Christmas songs just don't get along, unless they happen to be by Eels or Run DMC.

I would happily burn every copy of I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday and Merry X-Mas Everyone in a bonfire. I just know I have to put up with those suicide inducing pieces of shit at work on a regular basis.

You miserable bastard, both of them are great songs [:D]

If not them, it should be A Spaceman Came Travelling or Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End). Failing that, Killing In The Name is worth a shout.

HoF wins.....don't tempt me....

I don't know how far Thank God Its Christmas will go - if Gimli votes, then who knows?!

And Tom Waits wise - we could just all legitimately vote for this rather than rely on my crooked voting system... - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STXF9PZkjSQ.

I also expect Springsteen's verision of Santa Claus is Coming to Town to feature on everyone's list. Mainly cos then I can get both Tom Waits and Springsteen into another list.

Not even Christmas carols? They rock.

Rebel scum -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (11/11/2012 8:57:11 AM)

I'll try and get a list in.

Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter FTW!

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: The Empire Christmas Number One (11/11/2012 9:03:22 AM)

I'll have a go at this.

MA, have you ever listened to this album?
