Just had this conversation with someone on IGN - it came from an article about james cameron almost directing jurassic park, saying he'd have made it real nasty.. there was some tangent in the comments about how jurassic park wasn't scary, . oldschool1987 • 2 days ago • parent − Sprtacus554: iKR? I was watching Exorcist at 5. Some people get upset too easily. Horror films doesn't scar you from a young age unless you're totally weak minded and easily influenced. My kid will be watching horror films as soon as I think hes at the age to understand the difference between right and wrong. Don't want to raise a nancy lol. I look forward to all the downvotes from the do gooders. 38 76 •Reply•Share › maffew • 18 hours ago • parent oldschool1987: No parent should show their kid the Exorcist at 5 years old. Not because it's scary, just because it'd be totally wasted on them. What would the point have been? It's just bad parenting - don't get me wrong, I'd show my kids the classic horror films, but I'd at least wait until they had a grasp on the concepts within them - 5 year olds can barely feed themselves, let alone deal with the idea of demonic possession. Aside from anything else, I doubt they'd be interested in it.. Most five year olds won't sit through an episode of tellytubbies.. 0 1 •Edit•Reply•Share › oldschool1987 • 17 hours ago • parent maffew: 5 year olds can barely feed themselves? You sure about that, my kid could feed himself from about 2. Obviously not a parent. And yes they can grasp demonic possession, they know about ghosts and ghosts going i nside people, that's how he sees it. If you want to raise a kid to be a nancy then that's your choice but dont call me a bad parent. You obviously know nothing about children judging from your comment so I suggest you stop giving me advice because you're wrong. My kid is emotionally strong and enjoys watching these movies with me. 0 1 •Reply•Share › oldschool1987 • 2 days ago • parent I've watched adult movies (not porn lol) since as long as I remember. My cousins parents were too over protective and treated him like he couldn't handle anything mature. He went on drugs and died because. I blame the fact that he never had the chance to toughen up and make his own choices. I turned out alright. 18 47 •Reply•Share › maffew • 18 hours ago • parent oldschool1987: 5 year olds should be mollycoddled, their brains aren't properly formed yet. they certainly shouldn't be expected to handle anything 'mature' - that comes with maturity. I know that today things are different, what kids get exposed to in video games is equal to or greater than the worst most horror flicks could throw at them, but I still strongly believe that censoring what kids can watch up until a certain age is relatively important. By the way, I'm speaking as a 26 year old with no kids and a love of violent and depraved movies, I'm just being objective. 1 1 •Edit•Reply•Share › oldschool1987 • 17 hours ago • parent maffew: That's your opinion but at 5 years old is when I child mind takes in most information so it's better to introduce them to real vs fake at that age in my opinion. My kid now knows the difference and is emotionally strong. I was raised the same way and I turned out ok. I will not have my child mollycoddled to just grow up emotionally soft. 0 •Reply•Share › maffew • 14 hours ago • parent oldschool1987: That's fine, but I don't think exposing a child to horror flicks hardens them emotionally... that just means they've seen a bunch of nasty **** before they've hit their teens. In my experience, I wasn't deliberately exposed to things in order to achieve anything, there was things I wanted to watch and i was given the option of watching them. I was terrified of the end of Raiders of Lost Ark, didn't want to watch heads exploding, but I came to watching that scene on my own, I wasn't sat down and told to watch it. As a result, I developed a healthy love of cinema and film making, started understanding what was happening behind the camera, and that opened up a whole world of prosthetics and special effects, which meant i could watch people getting ****ed up in movies and not think anything of it... I think it's quite an odd perspective to show films like the exorcist or hellraiser to a child in the hope that it will harden them up - that's just weird... "Don't want my kid to grow up all nancy-ish so I'll show him some people dying" By all means introduce kids to films, but don't use it to condition them so they don't turn out wimps.. But hey, you're the parent.. 0 1 •Edit•Reply•Share › oldschool1987 • 11 hours ago • parent maffew: Now you're making it look like I force my kid to watch these films. Way to put words in my mouth to make me look bad. It started when I asked him to pick a movie, he picked a horror and I warned him it might be too scary and if it scares you too much I'll turn it off. I also made sure he understood none of it is real and it's all pretend. He watched it and enjoyed it, now I see he can handle this movies. I wouldn't let him watch one by himself, I'm always there with him. I wouldn't stop my kid watching a film because I'm not over protective and mollycoddling. You can believe what you want but starting these from a young age I believe can make them handle more growing up, it worked for me. You have no right to judge me dude, you're not even a parent. I wouldn't dare tell someone how to raise their kid, it's rude. 0 •Reply•Share › maffew • 2 minutes ago • parent oldschool1987: I'm not telling you how to raise your kid, I'm just questioning how you are. I wasn't referring to you having your kids watch them, I was referring to another post, someone saying their irish dad didn't want them growing up soft so he had them watch nasty films.. We just have differing opinions.. where would you draw the line? If he didn't flinch during the brutal murder with a fire extinguisher, or indeed the six minute rape in Irreversible, would that be alright too? It's not too far from the creepy torture and molestation that happens in Texas Chainsaw Massacre.. why not whack that in to sunday night viewing? What about Salo: 120 Days of Sodom? If he plucked that out of the collection would that be ok? I just think, at the end of the day, no five year doesn't need to see a 12 year old girl masturbating with a crucifix. It's not beneficial in any way. Children can learn a lot from films, life morals, right and wrong, mortality, where pets go when they die, but there are some things they don't need to see yet.. As you can see, I don't think you should show a five year old the exorcist. Thoughts?
