Beetlejuice! -> 1991: BJ's Top 50 of the Year (27/8/2012 11:58:17 AM)

So next up in my year in review is '91, as before the list will contain films, TV shows, TV episodes and shorts....

1991

50. The Simpsons - Like Father, Like Clown (#3.6)
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/82/Simpsons_8F05.png/235px-Simpsons_8F05.png[/image]

Lisa: A man who envies our family is a man who needs help.

The Simpsons were at the top of their game when I was a kid so a lot of episodes will turn up during this run-down. Here we have the first look into Krusty the clown's life as Bart and Lisa help him reunite with his father. Jackie Mason gives an excellent vocal turn as the guest star as Krusty's rabbi father. When the show managed to get the mix of humour and pathos right, it was hard to beat.

One of my favourite years! Great first choice too.

49. The Simpsons - Bart Gets Hit by a Car (#2.10)

Mr. Burns: I should be able to run over as many kids as I want!

This episode where Bart gets knocked down by Mr. Burns has the first appearances of two of the funniest recurring characters of the series in dodgy lawyer Lionel Hutz (voiced by the sorely missed Phil Hartman) and dodgy doctor Dr. Nick Riviera. Homer attempts to cash-in on Bart's accident but Marge disagrees which leads to a nice look into their relationship. Mr. Burns continues to be portrayed as a deliciously nasty piece of work.

ElephantBoy -> RE: 1991: BJ's Top 50 of the Year (27/8/2012 12:32:00 PM)

Not sure I have ever watched a whole Simpsons episode from start to finish. Strange but true[;)]

48. Black or White - Michael Jackson (short)
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/48/Michael_Jackson_-_Black_or_White.png/220px-Michael_Jackson_-_Black_or_White.png[/image]
Michael Jackson certainly understood the power of cinema when it came to making his music videos and this collaboration with director John Landis is a highlight of his work. As with most of the work the singer created, it contains moments of genius mixed with bizarre OTT egomania. The video has some fantastic dance sequences as Jackson dances with cultures from around the world, some nice cameos from Macaulay Culkin, George Wendt and the Simpsons and of course that brilliant SFX sequence where people's faces merged. But then in the extended version comes the downright bizarre sequence where Jackson transforms from a panther to dance suggestively with his crotch and smash cars up. Hmmm.

47. Bedhead (short)
[image]http://lh3.ggpht.com/michael.leader/SQOVUvRdMlI/AAAAAAAAA0Y/MxVFxYiPAfo/s288/bedhead1.jpg[/image]
Robert Rodriguez directed this little short at university and it's now available on a lot of his feature film's DVDs. It's a funny, quirky and creative little family film about a brother and sister who come across an odd telekinetic power. It's like Carrie meets Tom & Jerry. A charming little film and you can see it here:

46. In Bed with Madonna
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/cd/Madonna_truth_or_dare_poster.jpg/220px-Madonna_truth_or_dare_poster.jpg[/image]
A total vanity project but one that does say a lot about how the star lives within the public eye. At one point, then boyfriend Warren Beatty says why would she talk if there wasn't a camera in the room. The film follows Madonna on her Blonde Ambition tour and shows her life on the road which includes her close friendship with her backing singers and dancers and the controversy she causes in some places due to the adult themes in her show. It's a very interesting documentary and one of the best of its kind. But if your not a Madonna fan then you probably won't get much from this.

45. Dinosaurs (TV series)
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/32/Dinosaurs-DVD-4-web.jpg/250px-Dinosaurs-DVD-4-web.jpg[/image]
Ok, it is basically The Simpsons but with big puppet dinosaurs. However this was still a pretty good family show and it even sometimes had hints of social commentary within the story - such as teenage Robbie deciding not to eat meat in "I Never Ate for My Father". The creatures are pretty well designed with the little baby providing most of the laughs. The grandma dinosaur used to freak me out though.

impqueen -> RE: 1991: BJ's Top 50 of the Year (27/8/2012 2:26:51 PM)

I like both of those Simpsons episodes.

I donít mind Michael Jackson (Off the Wall is his best) I always thought the ending with the Crotch Panther Thrusting was the original and it was changed to the faces thing?

The only Robert Rodriguez work I like is The Faculty but the short was interesting. [:)]

In Bed with Madonna [:'(] as my late grandmother once said, what an awful woman [:D]. However Iíve always thought that Beatty is the best thing about it, his observations/reactions are hilarious.

Iíve seen bits of Dinosaurs but was never interested in the series.

elab49 -> RE: 1991: BJ's Top 50 of the Year (27/8/2012 2:51:40 PM)

Dinosaurs was hilarious while it was on, especially the baby (not the momma!). I still enjoyed getting the series on its DVD release a while back.

44. The Man in the Moon
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c6/Man_in_the_moonposter.jpg/220px-Man_in_the_moonposter.jpg[/image]
It's hardly the most exciting film on the list but this is a well acted and scripted rites of passage movie that has a lovely debut performance from Reece Witherspoon as the 14 year old Southern gal who falls in love with an older boy. Nice, romantic atmosphere throughout and a good start for the actress who transferred to adult star successfully.

The panther thing happens after the face changing but that is where channels like MTV would end the video. I don't really get what Jackson was aiming for with the extended ending. After there was complaints about him smashing up the cars they then added CGI onto the windows of the car with things like the swastika symbol and KKK to represent racist groups. As if the way to beat racism was through violence and destruction, think he got his messages mixed up.

43. Little Man Tate
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/53/Little_man_tate_ver1.jpg/220px-Little_man_tate_ver1.jpg[/image]
Jodie Foster made her directorial debut with this quietly charming little film about a child prodigy and his troubles in finding his way in life. A bit of a child prodigy herself, Foster certainly has an understanding of the material and presents the film with the right amount of empathy. It's a simple, likeable movie that is well cast and Foster herself gives a very good performance as the boy's mother.

What do you have against the Spy Kids films? Their delightful in my eyes.

I think elab is just upset that he never dated Madonna, its not too late mind her standards may be lower now[;)]

Used to love Dinosuars! Little Man Tate's pretty good too. Not seen the rest.

I'm guessing Elephant Boy thinks you're a dude. Or gay.

Simpsons was great back then.

42. Defending Your Life
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a8/Defending_your_life_poster.jpg/220px-Defending_your_life_poster.jpg[/image]
Albert Brooks' whimsical romantic comedy follows one man defending his life in the afterlife. It's a nice, simple film that doesn't explore too much of its main idea but it contains some laughs thanks to Brooks and he has nice chemistry with Meryl Streep. Its hardly a Matter of Life and Death but its a passable piece of fluff.

41. Jungle Fever
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/8b/Jungle-Fever.jpg/220px-Jungle-Fever.jpg[/image]
Spike Lee had a hard act to follow after Do the Right Thing and the film doesn't stray too far from the themes of that film. This follows a romance between Wesley Snipes and Anabella Sciorra and how their interracial relationship causes racist prejudices from families on both sides. It can be a bit hit and miss at times but the film is still one of Lee's best and has a spectacular performance from Samuel L. Jackson as Snipes' drug addict brother.

40. Rugrats (TV series)
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9e/Rugrats-logo.jpg[/image]
A quirky and really funny kids animation that looked into the vision of the world from a baby's eyes. The animation had a nice stylized design and the characters were great, in particular Angelica, the evil older sister. The show didn't really do so well when it was first released but the endless repeats meant that people eventually fell in love with the show. I felt a bit too old for it at the time but it was a guilty pleasure for me.

39. Frankie and Johnny
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/ca/Frankie_and_Johnny_poster.jpg/220px-Frankie_and_Johnny_poster.jpg[/image]
The whole controversy regarding Pfeiffer's casting now seems a bit bizarre, were critics implying that beautiful women would never work as a waitress or that they would never be unlucky in love? It seems like stupid criticism, Pfeiffer gives a lovely naturalistic performance and has great chemistry with Pacino. It's Hollywood schmaltz, but it's likeable and funny as well. It's also my Mum's favourite movie so I've seen it far too many times.

38. Dead Again
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/89/Dead_Again_poster.JPG/220px-Dead_Again_poster.JPG[/image]
Kenneth Branagh took a break from the Shakespeare for this massively OTT film noir about a private eye who helps an amnesiac woman only to discover they are linked to a previous life. It's well directed but Branagh doesn't do it very subtly at all, it walks that thin line between genius and madness. An unusual entry in the star's work. The less said about the dodgy old age make-up used on Andy Garcia the better.

37. L.A. Story
[image]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/50/Lastoryposter.jpg/220px-Lastoryposter.jpg[/image]
Steve Martin's love letter to the city of Los Angeles is a slight but charming romantic comedy that contains some nice comical insights into the city. It's nice to see a lighter look at life in L.A. than is often portrayed. It's nowhere in the same league as Woody Allen's Manhattan but at least it has some nice quirky moments - including Martin receiving advice from a freeway sign.
