Sway -> Neil Armstrong Dies (25/8/2012 8:34:59 PM)

In the same month we witnessed the incredible achievement of the Curiosity rover landing on Mars, we now witness the death of a person whose name is totally synonymous with the most epic space achievement of his time.

R.I.P Mr Armstrong.

Oh well, he lived to a good age and will be one of the most famous men in world history, RIP [:)]

Nexus Wookie -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (25/8/2012 8:42:43 PM)

Neil Armstrong - an absolute legend for people like myself who as a young boy used to look up toward the heavens, the stars and the moon, imagining how it would be like to take a journey out there, land on an alien 'world' so to speak, and Neil Armstrong was the first man to do that.

R.I.P,

Lucky Day -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (25/8/2012 8:46:16 PM)

Proper Legend. R.I.P

homersimpson_esq -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (25/8/2012 8:47:51 PM)

I think most boys and probably quite a few girls go through the astronaut phase. I was transfixed by astronomy around the age of 9-10, before I moved my gaze earthwards, and moved onto paleaontology. But at that time I was fascinated by all things astronomical, and it possibly was the start of my love of all things sciencey and fictiony.

All which is to say that, this was a man who had greatness thrust upon him, and shouldered it well, and became an inspiration to millions.

I think I'll stick on a few episodes of From the Earth to the Moon tonight in his honour.

High Flight - John Gillespie Magee Jr

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

There are very few people I'd consider a true hero of mine, this guy was definitely one. RIP Mr Armstrong, and thank you for what you and your colleagues contributed to the advancement of humanity.

By the way - first person to even suggest that he didn't really go to the moon gets banned.[:@]

homersimpson_esq -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (25/8/2012 9:01:40 PM)

I'll unban them, just to ban them again.

Scruffybobby -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (25/8/2012 9:05:15 PM)

A genuine hero. RIP Sir. You have made the ultimate leap.

No doubt NASA will honour his and his fellow teammates achievements by naming future 'devices' after him.

I actually meant my comment as a homage to that great moment when (although it predates me by a good few years) had half the world glued to their radio or television.

elab49 -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (25/8/2012 11:21:29 PM)

The post it refers to is deleted Sanchia, it wasn't yours. The post above should give a clue as to who's tasteless offering was removed. [:)]

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (26/8/2012 12:20:21 AM)

As long as the moon is there his name will never be forgotton.

A true legend.

hozay -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (26/8/2012 12:30:14 AM)

As a kid I sat in a darkened school room with 30 other kids and watched live, the grainy black and white images of Armstrong taking that step. It was all we talked about for months after, years, the dream was alive.

RIP Neil Armstrong.

Larry of Arabia -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (26/8/2012 12:39:45 AM)

To have been an integral part of a mission that is amongst the greatest achievements man has ever made must have been such an incredible honour. Rest in peace, Mr Armstrong.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (26/8/2012 12:46:47 AM)

There had better be a goddam massive remeberence service in DC.

steffols -> RE: Neil Armstrong Dies (26/8/2012 1:17:11 AM)

Such sad news. A great man who gave inspiration to generations of kids and adults alike. A humble man who never chased attention. If I could do just one of the many things he achieved in his life, I would die a successful person. He had a good innings and an amazing life. His passing shouldn't make us sad, it should remind us that there are men and women out there who deserve the plaudits, that there are still people out there who will inspire us and our children. We should be thankful that Neil Armstrong walked among us and he gave us hope and the joy of discovery in an age where everything has been discovered.
