Its quite clear that when Johnny Foreigners come over here they cheat. Handballs, Diving, and now Match Fixing.

I'm interested to find out more. Particularly if it is the case that they spent up to 86K per match to bribe players and officials, how many PL players could you buy for that? Seems pocket money to most of them.

But match fixing would explain this:

Full time
Chelsea 1-0 Barcelona
Referee: Felix Brych (GER) Stadium: Stamford Bridge, London (ENG)

Valencia should have won that. Barcelona looking increasingly vulnerable at the back. If they come up against Bayern or a Shakhtar side playing with confidence they could be in trouble in the Champions League.

Yeah I have said all this year they won't win the CL this season unless they sort out themselves at the back.

Olaf -> RE: European football (4/2/2013 1:51:12 PM)

It would be very surprising if the top teams in the tournament were involved. Since it's a crime syndicate-led betting ring in Asia, they're more likely to focus on the smaller matches with little media attention. It also explains why the amounts paid out to players seems so small - 86,000 isn't a lot to a PL team but if you look at teams coming in from leagues like Romania, Croatia, Cyprus etc (that's if it's not including qualifying matches) then the first team wage bill wouldn't be that much in comparison. This game almost certainly involved some rigging anyway: http://www.caughtoffside.com/2011/12/08/match-fixing-lyons-7-1-win-against-dinamo-zagreb-should-be-investigated/

That said, I can't think who's involved in the match played in England - some tiny fourth-seed European club throwing a game against Man United or something isn't going to generate much in the way of big payouts (though it's also plausible that the betting was on +number of goals, number of yellow cards etc etc). If it was an English club involved, the only team taking part in the tournament who could stand to make anything from that are Arsenal given their smaller wage structure compared to United, City, Chelsea etc. I hope not, but it's probably naive to think there's no rigging involved when there's as much money in the game as there is.

Inter fined 12.9K for racist chants aimed at Balotelli. That'll show 'em.

Honestly,I don't know how Inter are going to cope.[;)]

Buffon "The atmosphere is very British in many ways but, as far as I can remember, no fan has ever scored a goal." [:D]

I'd love to watch Celtic try to stifle Juve tonight. But I think I'll have to go with Valencia vs PSG.

OPEN YOUR EYES -> RE: European football (12/2/2013 7:53:04 PM)

1-0 to Juve.

Not trying hard enough.

Flatulent_Bob -> RE: European football (12/2/2013 8:40:34 PM)

Come on Juve 9 more in the 2nd half.

Ridiculous fouls and play acting cases that the ref ignores?

I was hoping Celtic would do well anyway, but the behaviour of the Juve defenders is shockingly embarrassing to the point that I hope they get dumped out of the competition for it. I really hope this ref gets punished for his awful performance by getting removed from any future champions league officiating.

I'd also like to commend the Celtic players lack of reactions to this cheating.

Game over.

Man.

C'mon Nath you know Celtic are never defeated, always cheated.

Skiba -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 10:06:33 AM)

Huge mistake to play Ambrose surely? Arrived back from the Cup of Nations that morning most likely after partying. Celtic fans, and the bookies', were convinced Celtic were going to win and far too much is made of the crowd. Buffon summed it up brilliantly before the game when asked about it "As far as I remember the crowd has never scored a goal" Zing!

Nezzley -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 4:20:27 PM)

Shame that Shaktar v Dortmund is the other game on tonight, two very impressive teams in the group stages, should be an excellent clash. Can't miss the big one though, fancy Kedira to open the scoring in a 2-1 win for Real.

Nexus Wookie -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:07:10 PM)

COME OOOONNN! YESS!

Professor Moriarty -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:07:20 PM)

Exquisitely delivered corner for Wellbeck to head home.

EDIT: Another beautiful ball in and a wonderful header from Ronaldo. Fantastic all round player, so good in the air.

Nexus Wookie -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:17:26 PM)

It had to be him! [:@][:D]

Hooch0959 -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:19:52 PM)

Ronaldo could have killed RvP with that free kick

Professor Moriarty -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:25:00 PM)

Benzema's not that good is he? ***Benzema to score in 3... 2.... **

Nexus Wookie -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:34:30 PM)

Thank god for half time..my heart is on the verge of EXPLODING! [:D]

OPEN YOUR EYES -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:36:07 PM)

Important away goal.
United need to keep the ball better though.

directorscut -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:41:08 PM)

Sergio Ramos to Jose Mourinho: "You don't know how to defend corners because you've never played at the top level".

Perhaps you could teach him Sergio? [:-]

Professor Moriarty -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:48:57 PM)

Did Arsenal loan Santos to Utd? Rafael has been mullered all the first half.

Olaf -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:53:30 PM)

anyone else watching Shakhtar/Dortmund? Good game so far.

Professor Moriarty -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 8:56:37 PM)

I was going to. But I'm glad I've stuck with the Madrid Utd game. Real are playing some scintillating stuff now. OOOOH for me he brought down Evra and every commentator knows that if he's the last man he has to go.

EDIT: Benzema off. Just never made that step up to the highest consistent quality, has he. More and more chances for Madrid now. Rooney has been anonymous in this game. Kagawa a lightweight. Be interesting to see what Fergie does. He'll be happy at 1-1 but this could so easily slip well away from him.

OPEN YOUR EYES -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 9:30:48 PM)

Ramos is such a tw@t.

OPEN YOUR EYES -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 9:37:08 PM)

wtf? how can the ref blow full-time when he's given a corner with 30 secs to spare?

Edit: and yes,the ref was shit.[:D]

ChickMagnet -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 9:47:39 PM)

Brilliant performance by United tonight, Phil Jones and Big Dave were the stand-out players for me. 1-1 was the right result but I'm very confident United'll get through to the next round.

Yeah couldn't understand that.

Still all to play for in Manchester, can see both teams scoring.

Mourinho moaning about Ferdinand and Evans not setting foot in Madrid's half all game is hilarious. Even funnier was saying Man Utd were set up for set plays and counters. Mourinho is the king of those!

Nexus Wookie -> RE: European football (13/2/2013 10:07:07 PM)

A great game. I'm quite happy to come away with a draw and a precious away goal. De Gea and Phil Jones for me were terrific, in fact the whole team bar a couple, put in a great shift. Cannot wait for March! You know what United should do to secure the tie? Bring on Chico in the last 30 minutea. You never know he might nab the winner! [;)]
