[:D] ooh, harsh. Yeah, good luck Arsenal.

I notice that little bitey cunt played in a friendly last night. I agree that he should be allowed to train with his colleagues, but a ban for playing should included friendlies IMO.

Professor Moriarty -> RE: European football (19/8/2014 9:44:30 AM)

Yeah, I agree. I thought the ban was too extreme. In not training or being allowed into a stadium. But I agree that it should include friendlies. But I was glad that the real substance of the ban was upheld.

Napoli vs Bilbao could also be interesting tonight.

Lord Varys -> RE: European football (19/8/2014 11:54:18 AM)

My predictions for tonight games:

Besiktas 0 - Arsenal 3
Napoli 2 - Bilbao 1
Saltsburg 2 - Malmoe 0
Steaua 3 - Ludogorets 1
Copenhagen 1 - Leverkusen 2

Professor Moriarty -> RE: European football (22/8/2014 9:34:51 PM)

I do very much like this Atletico team and at 18M Mandzukic could be a bargain. He's off the mark tonight.

Lord Varys -> RE: European football (29/8/2014 12:14:58 PM)

I predict Arsenal and Chelsea will finish 1st in their groups, City 2nd and Liverpool 4th...

I think your toffee nose is ruling your head there. What better way for Liverpool to be back in the top European competition than facing Real off the bat. I don't think they will win, but if Rodgers does his attack, attack, attack stuff it'll be a hell of a couple of games. Don't know anything about Ludogorets. Liverpool will hope they have the beating of Basel, but stepping up to the CL is often difficult so 3rd might be a result.

Arsenal and Dortmund should be interesting. Turkish football used to be where you went if no-one else wanted you. I think that is changing now. With Altintop and Sneijder Galatasary are no mugs, but I think the pace of Arsenal might be too much for them. Tricky away leg though.

Roma have a lot of recognizable characters, but I'd expect City to have the legs to beat them. Tough group, but I think City has to look at least at the SF stage of the CL now.

Chelsea will be very pleased with their group.

Rinc -> RE: European football (29/8/2014 3:08:15 PM)

I'm pleased with the draw. We get the glamour tie of Real plus two other teams that on paper we should beat. Not counting my chickens though, Rodgers hasn't managed in Europe before and we've been out of the CL for a while.

galvatron -> RE: European football (29/8/2014 3:22:58 PM)

Liverpool will qualify. I think they'll give Real a good game, especially at Anfield but I think Liverpool's susceptibility to leaving gaps in front of their back four will play into Real's hands.

Arsenal will go through but might struggle to win the group as Dortmund still have quality. Chelsea will walk their group and City might be able to sneak past Munich...

I fancy Spurs and Everton to come through their Europa League groups too...

Spurs has an easy draw. Everton group is very difficult but I am optimist that we will advance to the next round...
And if Liverpool manage to finish 3rd in it's group maybe we will meet them at the Europa League Cup Final. Now that will be a game that I will like to watch...

Terrible defending starts it off, but he gets the ball. Takes it out wide of the goal. Goalkeeper is coming towards him, so he passes it across the face of the goal. Runs round the goalie. Then backheels it into the top of the net.

I'd say it's worth a watch. Oh and see if you can also catch the final goal. Its an own goal. Well worth it for the way the keeper tries to rescue the whole embarrassment of it all.

Professor Moriarty -> RE: European football (16/9/2014 9:41:28 PM)

Spent all night bemoaning I can't get Setanta on my tablet to watch Dortmund. Then I get that finish at Anfield. Welcome back to the big table Liverpool. Work for Rodgers to do, but he'll take the result.

Oh and how about Olympiakos?

Lord Varys -> RE: European football (16/9/2014 10:05:00 PM)

Better be lucky that good is the new official slogan of Liverpool. I am so bitter that even Olympiakos victory does not cheer me up. What an unfair result that was...

Ultimo Lee -> RE: European football (16/9/2014 11:01:17 PM)

2-0 flatters Arsenal, no exaggeration to say they could have taken a thumping tonight. Dortmund head, shoulders, knees (continue nursery rhyme) above Arsenal. I haven't seen Arsenal that limp for a while.

Lord Varys -> RE: European football (17/9/2014 10:34:06 AM)

Barcelona 2 -Apoel 3
Bayern 1 - City 1

Well UEFA seem to think they are!

Scott_ -> RE: European football (30/9/2014 8:47:27 PM)

Francesco Totti is quite possibly the best player I've ever seen. Pirlo is amazing in his old age but Totti is on a different level IMO.

Lord Varys -> RE: European football (1/10/2014 9:59:12 AM)

My prediction for tonight games:

Zenit-Monaco 2-0
Anderlecht 1 - Dortmund 1
Arsenal 4 - Galatasaray 1
Atletico Madrid 3 - Juventus 1
Malmoe 0 - Olympiakos 2
Basel 2 - Liverpool 1
Ludogorets 1 - Real 6
Leverguzen 2 - Benfica 1

Professor Moriarty -> RE: European football (1/10/2014 9:27:45 PM)

Convincing from Arsenal.

Will questions start to be asked as to whether Rodgers is only as good as his best player. Last season that was Suarez, now he has the precocious but much less consistent goal threat of Sturridge. We can all agree that the first foray into CL isn't easy, but the teams they have faced so far aren't going to win the cup.

galvatron -> RE: European football (1/10/2014 9:31:21 PM)

That Wellbeck lad is suddenly looking like a good striker. Which is coinciding with him actually being played up front, instead of out wide!

I'm not sure that's the problem. The thing that impressed me about Liverpool last season was how many players improved and flourished under Rodgers - and that included Suarez who went from needing three chances to scoring one, to the player he was when he left.

Two questions remain about Rodgers though - one, how good is he as a defensive coach? Everyone knows that was Liverpool's problem last season and you need to do more than buy defenders - you need to drill and coach them. Maybe he needs to seriously think about bringing in someone else for his backroom with the experience and speciality in that area.

The second question is how good is Rodgers as a manager on the front foot? Liverpool excelled last season when they were the underdogs. When there was expectation and the need to close out a game, they crumbled and panicked. That's a hangover that's still overshadowing them because there is now the expectation to match last season and make a decent showing in the CL. The kind of mentality they need can take a long time to sink in, if it's natural to the coach and, while I think he's a far better manager, there is something a bit Keegan-esque about Rodgers at the minute.

Add to that of course that he has to bed in and train practically half a new team and I think the Liverpool job at the minute is more like it was when Rodgers took over because of Suarez's departure. He also has the unenviable task of being the Liverpool manager that has to face the fact that Gerrard has not many seasons left in him - and considering how many games he's won for Liverpool through sheer force of will, it's a very difficult question as to how the hell you replace him. Ultimately I think this season will probably have to be a step back for them and in that sense maybe an early exit from the CL won't be the worst thing in the world for them.
