indytim -> John Dunbar Theme Olympic Substitution?! (14/8/2012 12:11:11 PM)

Curious. If you saw this past weekend's Olympic closing ceremony you may have heard the luscious John Dunbar's Theme from Dances With Wolves by the mighty John Barry being played as the flame was extinguished yet on the official album of that event (click to see Amazon listing) there appears to be an original piece of music composed for that very moment that was not used (Disc 2 / Track 19 / Extinguishing The Flame), performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.

I wonder why this substitution was made. Obviously with John Barry being a 'Yorkshire lad' the piece that was used has every right to be classed as 'british music' but it struck me as odd at the time of watching as that track is so steeped in American (fictional) history.

I can only assume this was a choice made by the event's musical director David Arnold, as he is well-known to be a great fan of John Barry's work. If that is the case then I doff my hat approving in your direction, Mr Arnold. A fine choice.
