There are a few other Sjostrom's available. I have seen The Monastery of Sendomir (I didnt think much of it so I got rid of it), while both A Man There Was and The Outlaw and his wife both have Kino releases. I think that is it aside from the odd surviving fragments.

MonsterCat -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 11:40:12 AM)

Alrighty,

Brazil - Have not seen. I'm not a particularly big fan of Gilliam. I like Twelve Monkeys, but I usually think of him as a director who favours spectacular visuals over a coherent narrative.

Dead Man Shoes - Excellent. Deserves to be a second rounder at the very least.

He Who Gets Slapped - Not seen.

Jaws - If you don't love Jaws, you're an idiot.

The Jungle Book - It's fine, but I'm not particularly into old school Disney flicks.

Midnight Run - It won't make the second round, but we'll see how it goes.

Peeping Tom - Have not seen.

Psycho - A fine film indeed. Janet Leigh's death scene still bothers the hell out of me to this very day.

Ran - This will be my first Kurosawa flick.

Taxi Driver - In terms of Scorsese I always go back to Goodfellas, The Departed or Casino. Taxi Driver is great of course, but the overuse of the saxophone theme is a little grating for me. When Travis' and Betsy's porno theatre date comes up I always put my head in my hands. Awkward!

Toy Story - Haven't seen it in years. I'm OK with it, but I'm not the biggest Pixar fan in the world.

Van Helsing - This may sound like hyperbole, but this is one of the worst films I have ever seen. My grandmother's funeral was more entertaining than this. For the first time I'm actually dreading watching a HOF nom.

Never heard it called that before.

MonsterCat -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 11:45:27 AM)

Sorry, I meant penis.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 11:54:40 AM)

And that, IMO, is one of the key problems with the film. I'm quite glad I don't need to sit through Taxi Driver again, even though I do admire DeNiro's performance.

It's a bit of a HoF for him, isn't it?

MonsterCat -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 12:11:32 PM)

Yes, it is.

And while I couldn't possibly comment on Brazil, Midnight Run is clearly the best DeNiro film in this round.

hubu_phonk -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 12:16:29 PM)

I've never seen Midnight Run, and i haven't seen Taxi Driver in super years. On Brazil, I really like DeNiro's role and he doesn't saturate the movie due to not being in it loads. I really like Brazil by the way [:)]

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 12:17:28 PM)

And even in that, Grodin owns it. I bet he didn't think he'd have to up his game to stop being blown off-screen when he took the part [:D]

Tee-hee.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 12:30:14 PM)

You're still back at the penis, aren't you [:D]

Rebenectomy -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 12:42:27 PM)

Think this is the first round ever where I've seen every one. Well I say every one - I never made it all the way through Van Hell on account of it being so tragically awful, so cheers for that Gimli.

I knew you were a good sort.

I fancied my chances before seeing that lineup. Reb's got to be a shoo-in for this one, if only for her blurb.

Only 3 films I haven't seen in the list and one I never wanted to see again. Damn you to hell Gimli [:D]. I'd rather watch The Hangover 2 again than sit through Van Helsing a second time.

Brazil - Amazing, should win easily [8|]

Dead Man's Shoes - Brilliant

He Who Gets Slapped - Not seen

Jaws - Amazing, can see it winning this and topping the 70's poll

Jungle Book - A big meh for this one from me, never really been a fan.

Midnight Run - Very good, looking forward to rewatching it

Peeping Tom - Not seen

Psycho - Not my favourite Hitchcock but great nonetheless

Ran - Not seen, must have been on my Lovefilm list for close to 2 years now

Taxi Driver - Amazing although tough to watch at times

Toy Story - Third best Toy Story film but still brilliant

Van Helsing - ...

Oh and I've always wondered what's to stop the members from voting in the poll as well as by email?

Are the mods able to see who's voted in the polls?

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 12:55:50 PM)

Harry, members are allowed to vote in the public poll. That's why people get laughed at if there film gets no votes [:D]

The argument for it is simple - if everyone votes for their own, it makes no difference anyway.

matty_b -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 12:56:19 PM)

Um, nothing.

You're allowed to vote in the poll. [:D]

Rhubarb -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 2:31:44 PM)

Sod whore of fame, this is what every round ought to look like - great selection. I also don't want to be the guy that makes this happen but I would lol if everyone voted for Van Helsing topor second in a tactical way so as not to give points to rivals, and then it made it through to the final. Or won. [:D]

Fucking hell, this being a whore's round was no exaggeration was it? All we needed was someone to nominate Raiders. [:D]

It was actually Homer's first choice. But when he nominated it he said something like nobody ever nominates Spielberg, so it seemed fair to tell him Jaws was already in this round.

matty_b -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 5:52:24 PM)

Trouble is that we pick on each other so much that nobody (other than the obvious desperate for a win whores like TRM and Matty) will nominate big films. [:D] I sent an email to TRM last night with the names of two films I'm considering for the next round. Both by the same director, neither the most popular or famous of his work. TRM's response - "Good films but you really look like you're trying for a win."

matty_b -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 6:37:50 PM)

Fuck you, the next film I'm considering is only available on YouTube.

rawlinson -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 6:38:57 PM)

The film I want to nominate most is only on Google video.

homersimpson_esq -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 6:52:14 PM)

"I want to nominate a film, but you guys have probably never heard of it."
- Rawlinson, that one time.

Harry Tuttle -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 6:54:48 PM)

Bloody hipsters

Runs out of thread

rawlinson -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 6:56:17 PM)

Don't hate me because I'm cooler than you.

Rebel scum -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 7:01:52 PM)

My next planned nomination is freely available on DVD everywhere.

...I'm totally whoring for a win next time.

I really dont have a problem with you nominating something that could be a favourite, but it is something you always seem to be quite consciously against. Im still waiting for you to nominate a great Cary Grant film.

Without trying to give your picks away to everyone... if you look at the results of 2 of our decade polls, you will notice the film I was talking about is a lot more popular on here than the ones generally seen as his best work.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 15: The Whore of Fame (22/7/2012 8:03:03 PM)

Goes to check which decade polls we have and which ones have films that feature on a director's best vs favourites argument

You cheeky bitch, I nominated Bringing Up Baby. [:D]

If you compare it to work from a different decade though, they're the ones that are usually more acclaimed.
