Short, strangely muted and not as funny as the previous films. Curious...

What's to be said about the Simpsons short before it?

Ramone87 -> GOOD FUN!!! (14/7/2012 2:38:31 PM)

The fun continues in this fresh and funny new installment!

Our old friends, Manny and Sid the Sloth and host of new characters get splitt apart literally as the ice continents drift. Along the way we are introduced to the rest of Sid's family, mainly his grandmother who steals everyscene she is in and is hilarious! And a host of crazy pirate characters, the animation is slick as always and gags are well timed and suberbly executed, as always Scratt an absolute howl to watch, as his nut frenzy reaches new heights!

Great family fun!!

easily the best one yet. obviously there's not much of a story, but it's a funny movie. there's new character's like sid's granny, voiced by wanda sykes, and shira, voiced by j lo, & a song. excellent movie.

easily the best one yet. new characters, sid's nan & shira to name a few. a song, probably because j lo does one of the voices. obviously there's not much of a story, but it is a very funny movie. shame about the lame simpson short that came before it.

Very decent-the best of the 4 by far.
Highly recommended for those between 4 to 8.

Dr Lenera -> RE: Ice Age 4: Continental Drift (16/7/2012 8:50:34 PM)

As Scrat the squirrel’s pursuit of his acorn triggers the break-up or the Pangaea land mass into the continents as we know them today, we re-encounter Manny the mammoth, Diego the sabre-toothed tiger and Sid the sloth. Manny and his wife Ellie’s 14 year old daughter Peaches has an admirer in the form of a molehog called Louis, but she only has eyes for another mammoth called Ethan, who hangs around with the ‘cool kids’, and goes off to hang out with them, causing Manny and Peaches to fall out. Then, the breakup of the continent separates Manny from his family, with Manny getting stuck on a floating ice raft with Sid, Diego, and Sid's annoying grandmother Granny, while a large moving landmass drives Ellie, Peaches and all the other animals towards a land bridge.......

So it’s the fourth instalment in a series which said it was going to end with number three, but as with horror franchises, kiddie movie franchises, especially if they are animated, are not to be trusted when they claim the series has ended. In any case, I’m very fond of the Ice Age series, with its great three main characters; Manny the grouchy mammoth, Diego the wimpy sabre-tooth tiger and Sid the stupid sloth; cutting-edge CG animation, constant laughs and just a little bit of heart in there too. It’s easy to understand why the films have been so popular and even with adults, with the evening showing I attended full of adult attendees with no children. Of course the first movie in the series was the best and the sequels have tended to up the humour at the expense of some of the other elements, but this fourth outing is a worthy addition and the best since number one. It’s an incredibly fast paced, action packed and constantly funny ride which isn’t dull for a minute.

Of course we open with Scrat the squirrel chasing his acorn, and these scenes, which are inserted into the main narrative of each film, are always wonderful, but they reach new heights of invention in this one when the poor animal finds himself at the earth’s core and accidently causes the break-up of Pangaea, which was originally the only land mass on Earth until it split into the various continents we have today. Nice to have a bit of education for the nippers in a film like this, but we don’t waste time and soon hurtle into what comes across as a variation on the raft-down-a-mountain scene in Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom, and quite thrilling it is too. The film references are actually quite minimal in this one; you will notice The Last Of The Mohicans and a few others, but Ice Age 4, for the most part, prefers to riff on conventions or do something new with familiar scenes.

The picture stalls for a little with much emphasis on Manny’s daughter Peaches and the typical teen movie situation of her after someone who is probably not suitable for her while her best friend pines after her, though some might say that one of the series’ greatest strengths is that it creates situations which are relatable. Anyway, from here on Ice Age 4 plays like a bonkers version of a Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, an action-filled nautical adventure where our stranded main protagonists battle everything from pirates, whose ape leader at one point bursts into song in a not dissimilar manner to The Jungle Book’s King Louis, to some of the best sirens ever done on screen, hideous fish- like monsters who lure their victims by taking on the form of their object of desire. Of course all this is done with constant humour, most of which certainly hit my funny bone, especially when it involved an incredibly dumb seal henchman [played by Nick Frost and actually funny] who soon made me crack up just by him appearing, and Granny, the funniest old lady in years.

Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed Ice Age 4, which certainly delivers on most of the elements you would expect and delivers them well, though for a while it does seem to borrow from Happy Feet 2 when half the characters are trapped in a valley and overall there isn’t much originality story wise. The 3D is fairly good for the animals in some scenes but pretty pointless otherwise [I actually saw the 3D version by mistake thinking it was the 2D]. The ”family is best” message is perhaps overdone throughout the whole series but it’s a good one, though it’s some of the laughs which remain in my mind more, from the hilarious sight of Granny, tied by a rope to a post by the pirates, walking round and round it saying “”this is the best vacation ever”, to the accidental destruction of Atlantis. The film also ends on a nice touch by showing the cast doing their voices as their names come up during the credits.

Ice Age: Continental Drift

The final installment? well maybe that would be best as this fourth film is somewhat lean on ideas and humour I'm afraid.

The plot is getting a bit thin on the ground now, how can these guys have all this bad luck haha. The land on Earth is splitting up which by a series of unfortunate events separates the herd. Classic characters 'Manny' 'Sid' and 'Diego' are lost at sea, their mission (which they have no choice but to accept) is to get back to terra firma and find 'Ellie' and 'Peaches' (plus everyone else).

Following on from the previous films the herd now consists of the usual members but now includes the young teen 'Peaches'. As expected the story does revolve around this new character slightly but not entirely thankfully. As also expected this character is pretty annoying and uninteresting as a teen. Unfortunately we also have to put up with other lame teen characters who all speak like either hip hop artists or spoilt princesses in that typical American youth way. Absolutely hate when characters are realised this way as I'm sure other non American's do too.

On a little side note, why are all young characters in CGI films voiced by teen pop stars?. I realise they may be popular with the kiddies but surely there are better young actors that can used? young actors that can actually voice act properly that is.

Blue Sky also deemed it fit to include another terrible character this time in the form of 'Sid's' granny. Yep it really has come down to this, we now gotta put up with ancient relatives. Might be me but I didn't find this inclusion remotely amusing or interesting or useful even, what was the point? A poor stereotype and completely unfunny.

Of course its predictable but the plot just feels like the same stuff yet again. The inclusion of the pirate crew and their iceberg 'ship' is the only reasonable new offering that is worth some praise. A raggamuffin bunch of scurvy lily-livered misfits that look shabby and seedy much like the characters from 'Rango'. Their captain is the large ape 'Captain Gutt' which again does seem to be another rip from the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise (much like 'Buck' from the last film).

To me he comes across as a 'Captain Barbossa' copy to be honest, the deep voiced well spoken cad who doesn't really care about his own men. Not much humour given from this guy either, he's fun to watch but much more eerie looking for the kids if you ask me, a touch intimidating maybe?. Generally speaking this film does basically take a page out of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' book, no real originality or creativity from Blue Sky.

Lastly poor old 'Scrat' has finally run out of steam and ideas it seems here. The subplot is rather uneventful for him this time, I didn't really like how he is the cause of the continental breakup and I really didn't like the Atlantis idea for him right at the end. The concepts for him are getting too far fetched really, it should be simpler, but hey this is just my opinion.

I think this film goes back towards being a full on kids film again, just like the second. I really can't see how adults will enjoy it much with the inclusion of yet more small furry mammals, more love interests, teenage mammals and all the regular cliched visual gags that have been used before.
I don't wanna be hard on the film as its a great little franchise that has always looked good including this one but this really feels like a rehash with more average characters stuck in to try and garner more kiddie support. The female version of 'Diego' is another obvious lure, another way to try and stretch out the franchise for more possible sequels, maybe they will have kids too *groan*.

There isn't really too much outstanding happening here that's the problem, nothing I can look and say wow! about. The pirate crew maybe complete rips from else where but they are easily the best thing going despite not actually being that entertaining. The heroes are tired and nowhere near as fun, even good old 'Sid' has very little to say or do this time round.

Personally I think this has gone as far as it can go now. Most prehistoric creatures have been utilized and we've seen the ice age, the great thaw, the dinosaur age and now the continental breakup. Where or what else is there to do before these guys should really be dying out?.

SebMModerns -> It Was OK, Don't Expect Too Much. (31/8/2012 5:36:26 PM)

I was at a friend's house and me, my friend and his mother had the choice to either see "The Lorax" Or "Ice Age 4: Continental Drift", we chose The Latter! I was expecting nothing more than A "Decent" Film, and what I was expecting was what I got. The very best part of this movies were The Surreal Grinning Fish that kept on changing from sexy female animals were mind-warping characters to their deaths., The Aftermaths made this film disturbingly charming! My Best Friend gave this movie A 5/5, but he doesn't take films too seriously, unlike me!

My Rating For Ice Age 4: 3/5.

russelblair -> RE: It Was OK, Don't Expect Too Much. (7/10/2012 4:50:34 PM)

I love the Ice Age series. It started when I was a teen and watched all of them. I think the best is the 1st one, followed by the 3rd then the 2nd Ice Age movie.

But the 4th one, I think it's the worst.

I was confused with the story. The story gap from the 3rd to the 4th movie is large. Manny and Ellie already had a daughter (Peaches) who was already 19 years old. I think it is way too fast. Plus, the story had many deviations from the main plot. I really think it's a teen movie of Peaches, Ethan, Steffie, and Louis. I don't know now I'm even confused of what the main plot is.

The only thing I enjoyed about the movie was Granny. Everytime she's there, it's laughing time. Aside from her, I did not enjoy it that much.

Overall, I think the movie was just OK but it should have been better.
