But its not Gerard "More Jock than Scottish Jock McJock, Winner of Last Years "Mr Jocko" competition" Butler.

It's Ryan Reynolds.

Well, Canadian is possibly closer than a Frenchman or a Londoner.  [:D]

True dat. But it really was Butler's role - they must have spoken to him, but his his quote must have been astronomical. I mean "We're remaking Highlander... who can we get to play McLeod? We need a rough, tough, Scottish action hero that can convincingly play a man who has fought through the ages...."

"I know - Ryan Reynolds can TOTALLY pull that off."

I know that Lambert was "out there" for a choice, but I have to say I thought it was a bad choice (despite his "lots of different places" accent).

If they wanted less beef-cake more Lambert, McAvoy could have done it... Its not like there's a dearth of Scottish talent in the acting world, so I'm not sure why this decision has been made. Hey, he maybe fantastic, but I think this should have gone to Butler. If I'd been the exec producer, it'd give me a chance to say "I'll get you for this, Butler" to someone and actually mean it.

The Hooded Man -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 10:23:47 AM)

Kevin McKidd was linked was this a while back. Reynolds is a dull pretty boy. Totally safe and boring choice.

elab49 -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 10:39:36 AM)

Why would anyone cast Butler in anything they want to be good though? His IMDB list of dross is an atrocious calling card for any casting round.

Russ Whitfield -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 10:56:01 AM)

Kevin McKidd... another stirling choice there.

@elab - I think he's been in some entertaining stuff. I loathe "300" because its not the film that I wanted about Thermopylae (why adapt a shit comic when the real thing was pretty dramatic), but its still a good film for what it is. Put it this way, I've not seen a movie of his that I've not enjoyed (except "Gamer" as I type - that was rubbish).

st3veebee -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 11:14:41 AM)

My choices:

Gerard: he'd look the part, and can do action.

Dougray Scott: Needs a decent Role, has potential.

Rufus Sewell: Again deserving of a decent role

James Purefoy: Can he do a scottish accent?

McKidd: Would look the part...would he be ginger?

Ah hell...what about David Tennant? Liam Neeson? Colin Farell?!?!?

Russ Whitfield -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 11:27:06 AM)

They're all good shouts... if we, the unwashed of the Empire forum can come with better suggestions in less than a morning, now did they, the great clean in the Lionsgate studio, come up with this.

elab49 -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 11:34:24 AM)

This sounds like the discussion in Movie Musings. With Butler looking down a career not dissimilar to other actors heading to straight to video action rubbish and dreadful romcoms is looking the part enough?

Shouldn't we be hoping and aiming for decent actors who can also do the part? If it's at all similar to the older ones Highlander wasn't straight action - it'd be nice to have someone who could competently handle the component parts as opposed to looking good shirtless with a sword?

Russ Whitfield -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 11:36:09 AM)

Butler is a decent actor - check him out in Coriolanus.

elab49 -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 11:53:45 AM)

It was an unexpectedly adequate performance.

But isn't it a pity you have to search through that long long list on IMDB to find something defensible?

Russ Whitfield -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (27/6/2012 11:58:44 AM)

He's not Kenneth Brannagh, of course, but I don't think he's a bad actor. He's been in some dodgy movies, but he's got charisma, good looks and all the movie star qualifications and, as I say above, I've enjoyed almost all of the movies I've seen him in. I think he'd have been good as McLeod... that said, Kevin McKidd would have been fantastic... great, a better choice than Butler.

doubtlesswonder -> RE: Highlander reboot casts McLeod (29/6/2012 4:38:53 AM)

Ryan Reynolds is not a bad actor at all. Yes, he's done some bad films- but who hasn't? He gets a lot of stick for Green Lantern, but every bad review I read had nothing but good things to say about him. All the criticism was aimed at the script, effects and Blake Lively. Anyone who doesn't think he can do the serious stuff should check out Buried or The Nines, which were both fantastic.

However, even as a HUGE fan of his, I'm not sure he's right for this. I've never seen the original the whole way through, but I know a little about it. Since he's one of my favourite actors, I'll most likely go and see it, but I fear that it's just going to be another film that gets him some bad press.
