Hello and welcome, bonjour and bienvenue, herzlich willkommen, ciao and hola!

The first Empire Eurovision is officially open. The next post will show the entries to this years contest. Please now click the link and listen for 15 secs to our opening theme tune.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7YRZ5DVQv4

We have 24 films on show for the contest. Many will be well known, a few less so. All should be readily available in the UK. At the moment I'm planning for voting to close on Sunday the 5th of August. We'll decide how to show the votes at some point before then.

As well as our 12 countries taking part we welcome votes from other non-competitors - I ask only that they promise to have seen all of the films that have been nominated.

Final votes will be for a top 10 films. Eurovision scoring will be applied. And you can't vote for your own films.

Enjoy!

                    Denmark’s presentation is the beginning of a new film movement, the first film under Dogme 95 rules, and the latest Oscar-winning film from Denmark’s most prominent writer/director combination.

The Russian entries pair one young boy’s terrifying experience of war with two boys trying to deal with the unexpected return of a long-absent father.

Two tales of the 1930s Spain, one Trueba’s tale of romantic choices standing as an analogy for political ones on the brink of the Second Republic, the other one of the greatest modern fairytales to reach our screens.

Two periods of history come from Ireland – one the animated tale of the creation of a beautiful gospel, the other more modern and more violent, a tale of two brothers and the fight for Irish independence.

Here we have two films from the Czech New Wave – one the tale of the coming of age of an inexperienced young man working on the Czech railway, the second the tale of an increasingly odd crematorium worker, both dealing with politics with humour.

The UK entries are as far apart as any in this evenings contest and provide our only silent film. One demonstrates that the UK is a world leader in animation, while managing to fit in a nod to other well-known British films along the way, along with one of the greatest films of Britain’s silent era.

Two relatively modern entries for Germany as well – a kinetic multi-option crime thriller and a fantasy tale of angels over Berlin.

And finally. 2 Swedish films a half-century apart - one the tale of an elderly man  recalling his past on the long journey to receive an honour for his work and a surreal and dreamy part-work which makes pointed allusions to Sweden's past.

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 10:49:53 PM)

And those are our 24 entries - remember, it's a top 10 individual films you'll be voting for, they don't need to be from the same country.  [:)]

Rebel scum -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 10:51:06 PM)

Those are a damn fine selection of films, ordering this'll be a nightmare!

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 10:52:37 PM)

I hope everyone is remembering to click the link and listen to the theme tune.

SadFace -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 10:54:00 PM)

I thought we were ordering it by country not film, you've made it so much harder now elab! In a good way though [:D]

impqueen -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 10:54:57 PM)

There are a few I’d rather not watch again but as the Irish like to sing C'est la vie. Personally I think Russia looks good, UK obviously (damn it), Romania and Poland.

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 10:55:31 PM)

Nope. To make it harder for a country they need to do well with both films, not just the one. [:)]

I must be losing it - I hadn't realised Rawlinson wasn't a fan of You, the Living I just thought he didn't like it as much as I did.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 10:56:56 PM)

I don't hate it, just parts of it I found quite annoying.

impqueen -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 10:57:39 PM)

In a Better World is currently airing on Sky Premier, I think until Thursday.

This is a useful coincidence. And if normal practice is applied, it'll be on a couple of the other channels regularly for the next 6 weeks or so. 22 Bullets eg is still on every other night.

Well I guess if you're not likely to vote for it I can at least enjoy making you watch it again [:D]

I was going to go for A Swedish Love Story. Wild Strawberries would obviously have been Phantom Carriage if not for availability issues.

SadFace -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 11:01:58 PM)

I'm loving the top-quality Paint job on the Eurovision logo. Really adds a touch of lavishness to the contest [:D]

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 11:04:05 PM)

A rewatch might help it. And with Amelie in the round it wouldn't be the lowest film. [:D]

There's two countries where both films are probably going to be in my top 10.

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 11:06:00 PM)

I have 1 likely, 2 possible and one country I doubt I'd touch with a bargepole.

Rebel scum -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 11:14:16 PM)

I've got no certainties yet in terms of countries, but I do know that four of the films will almost certainly make my ten already.

MovieAddict247 -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 11:53:59 PM)

Nice work on the thread, Elab - I did listen to the theme.

Great choice of films too (out of the ones I've seen) - a top 10 will be difficult.

homersimpson_esq -> RE: Empire Eurovision 2012 (3/6/2012 11:58:07 PM)

Are we keeping the discussion thread for, uh, discussion?
