Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (2/6/2012 10:52:18 AM)

What about Van Helsing? [:D]

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (2/6/2012 10:54:17 AM)

I would stop the list before we reached it. If it came in at 77 we'd have a top 76.

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (2/6/2012 10:59:18 AM)

Git [:D]

I don't mind not having Muppets.

Qwerty Norris -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (2/6/2012 11:00:30 AM)

Yeah I'll put my name down.

Who knows, I might even submit a list this year! [:D]

Hmmm, episode wise then, if it's a two-parter story do you have to vote for the second part? Say, the Empty Child - that was nightmare inducing, but the Doctor Dances wasn't at all.

Did you miss Ecc' trying to dance? Scared me. But yeah, both parts.

Cool.

A couple of other queries - Disney's the Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad. If I vote for it, it's for the Sleepy Hollow section, not the Wind and the Willows. And does Watership Down count? I know it's not horror, but it's horrifying.

Is The Night of the Hunter allowed?

Yeah, it got to 59. last time we did the poll. [:)]

I did check the last poll but couldn't see it [:-]. I just checked the written list, not the one with pictures, though. I must have been half sleeping. And, good, I love that film [:)]

I am a huge Muppets fan (as everyone knows) but even I wouldn't vote for Christmas Carol. In fact, I didn't, I have already sent my list [:D]

They actually were split at some point in the 50s and shown as individual films, so I'd be ok with just the Sleepy Hollow section being voted for.

Yeah, I'm fine with Watership Down. The book gets classed as horror literature quite often as well.

Oh excellent, I'll go check the email.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (3/6/2012 3:44:39 PM)

Yep, got it, thanks. [:)]

Shifty Bench -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (3/6/2012 4:12:00 PM)

Awesome [:)]

Discodez -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (6/6/2012 10:21:41 AM)

what's the deadline for receiving lists?

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (6/6/2012 11:07:32 AM)

End of September.

Discodez -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (6/6/2012 11:16:17 AM)

Nice one, plenty of time to do a considered list and rank them too....

jiraffejustin -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 10:56:43 AM)

What you say we get Jigoku on the list, heh?

drews -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 3:18:06 PM)

Can you nominate Simpsons Treehouse of Horrors? I'm being serious. The Raven. Spooky stuff.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 6:42:56 PM)

The Treehouse of Horror episodes were allowed last year, it all depends on if there's a complete ban on things like that and Muppet Christmas Carol, etc.

Rebel scum -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 6:56:59 PM)

Things being more child-friendly shouldn't exclude them if they use horrific elements effectively. I'd argue that the Treehouse of Horror where the kids are being turned into cafeteria food succeeds in being a dark horrific episode, and deserves inclusion if voted for.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 7:12:47 PM)

Sorry, but it's going to have to be all or none on these extreme borderline cases. Either anything that uses horror imagery for the story is in, or only films/shows that are trying to actually be horror or horror/comedy.

Rebel scum -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 7:15:34 PM)

Do Treehouses of Horror not count as horror/comedy though? I mean, it obviously depends on the episode, but some mix horror and light relief really well.

matty_b -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 7:15:43 PM)

I reckon it would make it more interesting to do it different than last time, and go for the second option.

But - there was always going to be a but [:D] - would this

not mean the Treehouse of Horrors episodes are in?

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 7:23:17 PM)

Trouble with Treehouse of Horror is that only some segments of some of the episodes would actually count. I mean you couldn't argue the episode that has adverts coming to life and The Simpsons getting a song written to get people to ignore them as horror. So it's only certain parts that would be eligible, and going through every Halloween episode deciding what is and what isn't ok would be a nightmare. On top of that, unless there's a hard and fast rule there's going to be complaining "Why is x allowed but y isn't?". I'm fine to go either way, but if Simpsons are allowed, so are The Muppets.

SadFace -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 7:31:43 PM)

I thought the adverts coming to life were scary [:(]

Rebel scum -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 7:33:59 PM)

I see your point, having had a look the cafeteria episode is the same one that features Homer time-travelling, which definitely doesn't fit. I don't particularly mind either way, but I can see why it would be a pain classifying exactly which Treehouse of Horror segments were OK.

matty_b -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 7:55:06 PM)

Well, that reasoning seems sound, so I say this one should be a purely horror or horror/comedy poll.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 7:57:28 PM)

Generally I fall on the side of inclusion, it's just that the last time we did this a lot of people were pissed off about The Muppets making it in. I don't feel right just singling out that film because in a way it feels like singling out Gimli. What I would like to do with the list is make it even more interesting by keeping those real borderline cases, but expanding the boundaries of the list by allowing people to vote for up to 250 choices, but making it a full horror list. Not just voting for films and select t.v. episodes, but including novels, short stories, plays, radio plays, etc. I'd even include board games and computer games, and make it a list about horror culture. But I don't know if there'd be enough interest in doing that.

matty_b -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 8:00:27 PM)

Gimli brings it on himself/herself. [:D]

No, fair enough. Your poll, rawls - run it how you see fit. I would probably struggle to vote for anything outside of film, TV and books, though. [:)]

Rebel scum -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 8:02:47 PM)

That does sound really interesting, I'd be really interested in seeing that sort of list and would love to participate.

I'd also argue computer games deserve inclusion solely because of things like Silent Hill 2, Amnesia, Eternal Darkness and other games like that, which have in my opinion been some of the most effective uses of horror in the past decade.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 8:04:16 PM)

I doubt most people would vote for much outside that, but you'd get things like the Resident Evil/Silent Hill style games that I think would get a decent showing, maybe even stuff like the World of Darkness books/rpgs. And I just think it would be interesting. But I'd probably be the only one. [:D]

My instinct after the CoM debacle is to let people vote for what they think is eligible and it gets sorted out in the count. And something like The Muppets wouldn't have been an issue last time, or in the cult list, if I had put up a smaller list at the end. If I'm honest, I'm perfectly fine with it being in the horror poll, simply because it is riffing on a classic of supernatural fiction.

Ok, cool.

So before too many lists come in, what's the general feeling about expanding the boundaries of the list? There's two of us who'd like to see it now, what about you Matty?

matty_b -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 8:10:29 PM)

Yeah, go for it. If nothing else, it always means more recommendations from other people. [:)]

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Horror List: Year Two Poll (7/6/2012 8:11:55 PM)

And people wouldn't have to vote for things other than films if they didn't want to. I'd still accept cinema only lists, as long as they had 25 entries.
