James Dyer -> Empire iPad US Edition (31/5/2012 8:32:05 AM)

It's taken a long time to get here but we're pleased to announce that later today will not only see the arrival of Empire in the US (and Canadian) App Store but it will be the first issue of Empire's dedicated US edition, with reviews and content updated for American audiences.

... Oh, and the UK issue will also be with you today!

IveM -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (31/5/2012 11:57:01 AM)

Yay ...

I'm guessing that the content restrictions were the hold up on this, silly advertising laws.

How different from the UK edition will it be ?

James Dyer -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (31/5/2012 12:03:53 PM)

The odd color/colur tweak to spelling plus all new In Cinemas (now In Theaters) and Re.View content.

Cockeye -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (31/5/2012 8:48:19 PM)

Will the US edition work? ;)

James Dyer -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (31/5/2012 8:51:51 PM)

I hope so! We're still in the office making sure!

IveM -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (31/5/2012 10:53:32 PM)

Nothing in the Canadian App Store as of 5:50 pm EST.

James Dyer -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (31/5/2012 10:54:24 PM)

Yes, sorry. Still finishing the testing (PST anyone?). Failing that, what time zone is Hawaii in???!

IveM -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (31/5/2012 10:56:33 PM)

Pushing an all nighter due to issues, how familiar does that feel.

Guess I'll take another look in the morning.

Have fun.

IveM -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (1/6/2012 12:12:09 PM)

It's around 7am EST (midday UK time), and still nothing on this side of the pond.

Did you manage to fix your problems ?

Will swap you a free 1 year subscription for a beta test if you want ;)

James Dyer -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (1/6/2012 1:32:41 PM)

It's all up - it's jsut not showing up easily when searching on the store. Try this link

IveM -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (1/6/2012 2:32:09 PM)

Got it, downloaded the free issue .... Man, you guys put my other mag (just a book style app) to shame.

Def. worth the 2 bucks a month.

Hi
Subscribed to US edition, did not get any issues yet, should I be waiting for the July issue as the first?
Thanks

James Dyer -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (6/6/2012 11:06:58 AM)

No, if you've subscribed then you should get the current Dark Knight issue as part of the subscription (assuming you haven't already bought that separately). I tested this with my US account (I bought a 1 year subscription) and it seemed to work for me. Let me know exactly what's happening and I'll look into it for you.

can we have shawarma -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (6/6/2012 5:23:48 PM)

I have the email confirming my subscription, i've restarted the app several times, it says it's updating the library, it does that but all i still see is the Dark Night to buy and my free sample (really nice btw, subscribed because of it)

it says i'm on a one month trial and that i'll be charged when it ends on july 1st.

thanks!

I received this a while back...it's quite annoying i still can't access my subscription.

i'm honestly stumped by this. It seems you're the only one who's been affected thus far. Try uninstalling the app completely and then reinstalling. I know this is going to sound obvious but there's no chance your device is logged out/logged in as someone else is there?

can we have shawarma -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (9/6/2012 12:25:15 PM)

It worked!
Uninstalled and reinstalled and bingo

Thanks !

James Dyer -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (11/6/2012 2:57:34 PM)

Glad it's up and running. Sorry for the teething troubles.

Philbh -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (13/6/2012 12:26:00 PM)

James,

Is the above price for a one year subscription in the US correct? $19.99? That's around £12.50 compared to the UK price of £29.99

Even with VAT at 20%, the US price is almost half of the UK's.

If we were given the same price, I would have no problems at all in paying for both the print and iPad edition.

James Dyer -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (13/6/2012 3:52:11 PM)

Yeeeeeeeees. This is one of those rather awkward situations where I'd like to lie but won't.

Yes, the US subscription price is cheaper than the UK. I could say that the US edition is single orientation, thus having half the content but (while true) that's not the reason. The simple fact is that the US magazine market is wildly different to the UK. Their issues cost less and their subscriptions cost next to nothing. The reason for this is that they don't rely on newsstand sales like we do (I mean that in the traditional sweet shop sense rather than the Apple one). Their whole model is based on advertising so they sell their subs for a pittance and reap all their profits from the advertisers (you can quite literally subscribe to some print mages for five dollars a year). For that reason it became clear that if we were to launch the US edition at the same price as the UK edition (bearing in mind it's US only and only available in that territory) then we'd be massively uncompetitive and basically not sell any. Hence the discrepency.

I appreciate this is probably no consolation to those of you paying more for the privilege of living here in the UK (but then that seems to be the case with everything these days) and you can't buy the US edition outside the US (the same way they weren't/aren't able to access the UK edition). But then you probably wouldn't want to since it's localised for the US with all US cinema and DVD reviews. I know it sucks but such is life. Look at how much less the Americans pay for Apple products and then you'll really cry.

Cockeye -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (18/6/2012 10:26:28 PM)

Eh? You were doing so well until that last sentence. the "apple products are cheaper in the US" myth which just isn't true. You forget - shelf edge prices in the states are NOT what you actually pay at the till. Their equivalent of VAT is added later.

James Dyer -> RE: Empire iPad US Edition (19/6/2012 9:39:17 AM)

<pedantry>
Yes but VAT in the UK adds 20% to the price and sales tax in the US (although it varies from State to State) is around 10%. Thus, new iPad in the UK (entry spec) is £399. Same model in the US is $499. That's £319 and even if you add the sales tax it's still only £350, which is almost £50 (or 12.5%) cheaper.
</pedantry>
