elab49 -> Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 4:48:52 PM)

Discussing this in the top 100 thread, I wondered how many people might be interested in a Eurovision type film contest. The basics would be

- you get your country (I think some people would be happy with any, but others could ask for 1 or more and if more than one person wants a particular country we can draw for it. I'd try to make sure that everyone gets a country they are happy to choose films for though, otherwise it really won't work)

- the country holder nominates, say, 1-3 films from their country for submission to the contest. One film might produce a really obvious winner, but if you've got to balance your score over a couple it might be harder for your country to win.

- rounds depend on how many people take part really.

- there is a question of watching/access to the films - this one may sink the ship before it starts tbh, but note it as up for discussion for the moment.

- scoring - would be the same as Eurovision. This may also help cause some surprises in the final vote.

Country options include

UK
Ireland
France
Germany
Spain
Italy
Sweden
Norway
Denmark
Russia
Turkey
Poland
Austria
Romania
Ukraine - stuff from the old Soviet filmmaking has been shared out here like Arsenal, etc, it seems
Netherlands
Belgium
Iceland
Greece
Czech
Ruiz or D Oliviera fans could go Portugal

How does Eurovision score?

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 4:59:40 PM)

*sniff* how could people not know?!?!

Top 10 choices receive scores
12
10
8 down to 1

So the voting would be on films, not countries, and tot them up to get the country's score.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 5:01:23 PM)

So that bit in Father Ted when they read out the big list of 0 points isn't accurate?

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 5:23:00 PM)

I'm afraid it's a shocking factual error in an otherwise carefully constructed episode.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 5:29:16 PM)

I feel so betrayed.

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 5:41:15 PM)

INdeed. And given how accurate a prediction it is of Ireland's subsequent song choice policy, it's a pity they were so lazy about that bit.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 5:42:31 PM)

The Dick Byrne song in that episode always makes me think of The Living Years.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 5:42:50 PM)

Just one more thing, why have you stopped guessing in Who Am I?

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 5:58:17 PM)

Last post I saw was Hubu's. My only transference activity this afternoon has been Eurovision - otherwise snowed under at the moment so my normal long weekend around Eurovision is under threat. [>:]

Maybe a film Eurovision will finally help me understand the appeal of the music one. [:D]

MovieAddict247 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 7:25:48 PM)

It sounds amusing - I'd take part.

I'm in, so do we select countries here or by PM. I know which one I want.

Eurovision is amazing. I'm gutted that I've a previous engagement this Saturday and won't be able to watch it live. Though, I'm wondering if any bars in Belfast are showing it, so I casualy suggesting going there [sm=33.gif]

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 8:07:33 PM)

If we work out the numbers then I'll ask

a) who doesn't care which country they get

b) who really wants a particular country so they're comfortable with their film choices

One we know the b's we'll take it from there - key thing is to ensure everyone gets a country they can choose a couple of films from and be happy with their choices, not just make do. [:)]

It's better if you have twitter.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 8:55:05 PM)

Does Twitter make the music better?

paul_ie86 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 9:03:26 PM)

No but you can see everyone's jokes/sarcastic comments about it.

rawlinson -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (23/5/2012 9:04:37 PM)

Yeah, but if I want to make sarcastic comments about bad music I can just go through PA's Last Fm history. [:D]

Rebel scum -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (24/5/2012 9:56:33 PM)

Some possible suggestions

- accessability is always an issue with these things. Would people be willing to watch on, say, youtube or take/make disc loans? If not, we can stick to pretty much the same rules as the HoF.
- timing. Probably depend on the final number of films? At the moment HoF is 2 months for 12 films - possibly shorter if everyone who wants to join in signs up to it?
- A eurovision semi (no rude jokes) is about 20 countries. If we have, say, 10 people who want to take part and 2 films each then we could do it in a single round? In the spirit of Eurovision finals where everyone votes - all 40 odd countries - not just the 25 in the final we could take votes from others but, unlike the HoF, they'd have to promise they'd seen all the films before they did. And they'd get to submit a vote run-down as the same way as the people taking part (so a bit like the Literature Hall of Fame in that - but it does work in Eurovisiony terms because watching failed countries vote is one of the most annoying things about Eurovision and oen of the major problems of block voting).

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (25/5/2012 11:21:23 AM)

I'd give this a go if I could have the UK. Not sure if I could pick a couple from that many other countries [:D]

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (25/5/2012 11:30:41 AM)

Would Ireland be a possibility for you too?

Qwerty Norris -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (25/5/2012 12:09:21 PM)

Yeah I'm up for this!

Might struggle though if I get paired up with the Ukraine...[sm=08.gif]

elab49 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (25/5/2012 12:20:14 PM)

I think we'll get few enough people for this that only the better known countries will get picked - although I added Ukraine in because it seems some of the old Soviet films have been parcelled out to the break-offs - Dovzhenko's eg seem to show as Ukraine now. But you're right - I don't see it being a first choice for many![:)]

MovieAddict247 -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (25/5/2012 1:04:26 PM)

Countrywise, I could do UK, maybe Ireland and then Germany and France at a stretch.

Rebel scum -> RE: Empire Eurovision - Discussion Thread (25/5/2012 1:25:49 PM)

Yeah, in terms of countries I could do UK, France, Germany, Russia and probably Spain.
