1. Mr. Show - The Audition

[image]http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k241/worldsgreatestsinner/TheAudition.png[/image]

Created by David Cross and Bob Odenkirk as a HBO sketch series, Mr. Show would be a legendary comedy series if only for the wave of U.S. alt-comedy greats that were a part of it, not just Bob and David, but Sarah Silverman, Brian Posehn, Paul F. Tompkins, Dino Stamatopoulos and Tom Kenny (among others). It was imaginative, nasty, weird, innovative and hilarious. The Audition is one of the show's most popular sketches, a simple idea of David trying to audition for a role in front of Bob and Dino.

So this is an absolutely everything list? Favourite tv shows, music, crisp flavours, sexual positions, Picasso paintings, etc?

I've never heard of Mr Show. That was an entertaining clip though.

That sketch was amazing.

"Kid, you got the goods."

"Really?"

Cross' expression is priceless.

That would be yes. To all.

Mr. Show was incredible. Up there with The Ben Stiller Show as being one of those defining U.S. comedy shows from the 90s.

You ever see the episodes of Just Shoot Me with Cross? The show was always ok, but never amazing, but Cross' performance in his few guest appearances was hilarious.

Is that when he's playing the special brother? [:D]

paul_ie86 -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (29/4/2012 6:05:26 PM)

Cross plays Elliot's brother who's pretending to be brain damaged isn't he?

rawlinson -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (29/4/2012 6:22:16 PM)

He was, scamming everyone for about 15 years because he didn't want to go to college. [:D]

2. Mr. Show - Pre-Taped Call In Show

[image]http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k241/worldsgreatestsinner/PreTaped.jpg[/image]

Possibly my favourite Mr. Show sketch ever, and the one I keep showing to people to get them to watch the series, is the Pre-Taped Call In Show sketch. David plays the host of a call-in show, but the show on the air has nothing to do with the subject of the conversation for calling in. The show airing was taped the week before, the show taping now is a completely different topic. If the show airing is about pet-care, you should be calling in to talk about the elderly. Another simple concept taken to the most absurd logical conclusion, with a truly brilliant comedic performance from Cross as the increasingly frustrated host.

rawlinson -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (29/4/2012 11:02:53 PM)

I never saw the Divine David stuff. Didn't he show up in something like Nathan Barley or The I.T. Crowd as well? One of the mid 00s Morris things.

The Call Show clip is brilliant. [:D]

rawlinson -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (29/4/2012 11:35:01 PM)

I love the little touch of David having a bit more hair in each television screen. [:D]

Yeah and looking more and more ragged. [:D]

rawlinson -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (29/4/2012 11:37:58 PM)

[:D] It really is cool to see Starburns in stuff like Mr. Show, because a lot of people just had him down as this support actor, but he's been a fairly big deal comedy writer going back 20 years.

impqueen -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (29/4/2012 11:41:49 PM)

I didn't really know that until I listened to the commentaries for Community, which are equally as funny as the Series. In fact as has been mentioned in US Community he begs for Starburns to be killed because he's not an actor. [:D]

rawlinson -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (29/4/2012 11:57:46 PM)

One of my favourite things with Dino was there was an article shortly after the Chevy tape leaks about all the people Chevy has pissed off over the years. And it basically said Dino used to have a problem with him but he's ok with him now, and he wrote in to the website after the article went up to say this

quote:

Chevy mostly pissed me off when I was working on Conan back around '94. I had been working hard all week on a very complex desk piece. It played the segment right before Chevy came out and it did okay. After Chevy was introduced, he sat down, and the first thing he said was, "Wow, Conan, that bit [referring to the desk piece] sure was... stupid."

Also just to clarify, I get along with Chevy because I barely work with him and don't have him constantly ruining whole days when I'm there, like he does with the regular cast members. I view him now as a confused old man who can't really hurt me in any way. I understand why the regulars on Community and the full time writers hating him. If he wasted my time as much as much as he wasted their time, I'd hate him, too.

which I thought was refreshingly honest. [:D]

impqueen -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (30/4/2012 12:02:02 AM)

[:D] Yeah as much as I think Chase is brilliant in Community (and a few other things) he does always come across as a dick but at least he's consistently a dick.

rawlinson -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (30/4/2012 12:06:22 AM)

I think there's a thing with him where he's good as certain characters, and Community is one of the best, but he constantly over-estimates how innovative he's been. He was the break-out star of the first season of SNL because he had weekend update and he was saying his name as part of his routine, so it was reinforcing to the audience who he was. But if you look at his career after SNL, some good performances in good films, but a lot more crap ones, and even the good ones aren't really ground-breaking. And one of his biggest problems with Community seems to be that he thinks its beneath him, and how he wants to be so innovative, when he never really has been. The article on just how many people he's pissed off is fascinating reading though.

I read that a few weeks ago, it is staggering. He must have a massively impenetrable ego which given the talent and numbers he has pissed off is weirdly impressive. [:D]

rawlinson -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (30/4/2012 12:17:30 AM)

What amazes me is he managed to piss off Gilda Radner. Everyone I've ever read interviewed about her says how lovely and wonderful and incredible she was. How the hell did he manage to piss off a woman everyone fell in love with? [:D]

MonsterCat -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (30/4/2012 12:26:07 AM)

Speaking of Cross, did anyone here see his sitcom The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret?

rawlinson -> RE: My Totally Shameless Bandwagon Jumping Favourite Things List (30/4/2012 12:44:32 AM)

I did. Wasn't his best work, but it was cool.

That's about all I've seen him in apart from a few films. It was good enough.

Buy the box set.

I might rent it instead. Too many unwatched DVDs!
