'wrath of khan' only used footage from the drydock scene in TMP.
the rest was original footage from ILM using the TMP enterprise model.

The drydock scene is the most beautful bit of model work I've seen...

Look at that against the latest Trek films attempt at "Ohhh sexy ship" and the model wins out

Saw this years ago (around 1987) and remember it being very good, though dont know how it would hold up now

It is (and, in my opinion, always was) a typically mediocre 80s "soft" horror (cf. House) which stood (and still stands) out thanks to the effects, a lot of which look amazing even now.

A rare case of the special effects making an otherwise reasonably rubbish film entirely watchable.

The Gate still has astonishing visual and practical FX

It's worth noting that a lot of CG is used for both characters, especially Johan (is that his name?) for one with the gas effects, for two a lot of the times where he's ebntering and exiting the suit. Also the big dude has CG enchancements in a lot of the scenes, particularly the action scenes.

Although i totally agree that they're great looking FX

rich -> RE: Excellence in Practical Effects (4/5/2012 9:27:46 PM)

A perfect way to use CGI. Though the "Mr Wink" character can be scene walking about in the extra features pretty much unaided. Cool stuff.

Absolutely! I love the extra's for Hellboy 1 and 2, a treasure trove for geeks! [:)]

Dpp1978 -> RE: Excellence in Practical Effects (5/6/2012 11:33:09 AM)

I'm bumping this because I just read Matthew Yuricich: one of the great matte painting on glass artists, died last week.

If you are not familiar with his name you almost certainly are with his work. His IMDb page can be found here.
