Well, I had this back in the day, when it was just the standard 11 tracks + hidden one (it seems to have had several re-releases since with extra tracks added). It was amongst my collection that got half-inched and having heard it more than many-plenty during the early 90s, it wasn't an album I was in a desperate hurry to replace.
However, I found a cheapo copy a couple of years back when I was going through an iPod-maximising phase and figured WTF, might as well get it for old times' sake.
I separated Release
into separate tracks, stuck just about every spare PJ track I owned on the end, and then plopped it on the iPod, and it got lost to the shuffle without even getting a single proper re-listen. So I listen to it now, having not heard it for about 16+ years. (Which is mental.)
So how is it after all this time? Well... I kinda feel it's on there due to familiarity rather than because I actually still like it (sometimes it's hard to tell). I was always a tiny bit disappointed by the album (they struggled to surpass that Nirvana's-poorer-grunge-brother role for me), the general downbeat mood & guitar sound (and solos) of the album remain a bit... <sigh>, and I didn't love it enough to continue following the band's career. Due to massive overexposure of the singles at the time, I realise I still
cannot bear to listen to Jeremy
, and Alive
isn't far behind. Of the album's singles, there's only Even Flow
that I would say I still think is listenable. From the album tracks, Porch
I'd say are ok, but to be honest, I could live without them; Once
, Why Go
are a bit more enjoyable, with Black
by far the regular album's top two.
From the supplements, I always really liked Wash
and State of Love and Trust
are good, too, but the comedy number, Dirty Frank
is obviously inessential. Rearviewmirror
I like a lot, and they still stand up today, and make me think I probably should have gotten Vs.
at the time.
Although my own rules say they're eligible, I don't think I'll put either of the Vs.
tracks up as winner. Wash
falls just behind the top two of Black
, and Black
was always my fave.
