ChickMagnet -> EMPIRE's top 100 Footballers of all time (12/2/2012 11:11:13 AM)

Most of you have probably seen MOTH's thread here, with Miguel Delaney's list of his top 100 footballers of all time, and I'm sure you'd agree we can easily do better than that!

So here's the plan, you can vote up to 30 players, you don't have to go that high but you've got the flexibility to go there. The higher the player on your list, the more points they get, 1st gets 30 points, 2nd 29, etc.

Votes need to be in by close of play on Saturday 31st March, I'll tally the votes up in the next couple of days from then.

So lets get voting!

I'm seriously tempted to go for players who wouldn't make any football writer's lists in a million years, but who I think are awesome [:D]

Steve Livingstone - Grimsby Town legend, its going to be hard to keep him outta my list [:D]

Good work mate! I'll be having a think today about mine but my top three will be Kerry Dixon, Tony Dorigo and Ken Monkou!

Professor Moriarty -> RE: EMPIRE's top 100 Footballers of all time (12/2/2012 12:01:16 PM)

Cool.. that gives me something to ponder. I guess its hard to get right, as we are already seeing. With some people going for "unsung heroes", and then you have cases where all I've probably seen of some players is old clips, or read about them and you wonder if you should vote on them without having seen enough of them playing?

That's the problem I have. There's no doubt players like Di Stefano, Yashin and Puskas are legendary players, but if I vote for them I'll be voting without ever actually having seen any footage of them playing. It's tricky knowing how to judge it.

It'll feel like voting for them because I'm supposed to, rather than wanting to, if you know what I mean.

Yep I know what you mean...I've seen bits and pieces of that famous Hungary side with Puskas and Hidegkuti but I couldn't really vote for them despite knowing they are probably up there with the best of them. That could be the beauty of this list as it will likely throw up some non-critically acclaimed players and contain people's favourites - tjhey may not make the final list but it'll be interesting to see

Rinc -> RE: EMPIRE's top 100 Footballers of all time (16/2/2012 9:56:03 PM)

Not sure if I'll put together a list. I said before on this forum that I find it hard to say (IMO) Pele or Maradona are the greatest players of all time because I never saw Pele play and I missed most of Maradona at his peak. All I've seen of them are clips. So if I was to do this I'd have to just go with players I've seen in my lifetime and can remember a good amount about (basically post-1990) plus any players from the past whom I've seen a substantial amount in video clips. Which is essentially just Liverpool players as I used to religiously watch videos of Liverpool when I was a kid.

Needless to say my list would contain God...

Scott_ -> RE: EMPIRE's top 100 Footballers of all time (16/2/2012 10:00:56 PM)

Right, afore I get torn into this a caoupla points:

1. Football is a team game. Individualists are all well and good, but they miss the point. Mavericks are not individualists.
2. Goalkeepers aren't footballers. Footballers dinna use hands. Footballers struggle to lower themselves to the taking of throw-ins.

So...

30. Scholes
29. Maldini
28. Prosinecky
27. Koeman
26. Baresi
25. Gerd Muller
24. Dalglish
23. Van Basten
22. Ronaldo, the proper one.
21. Hagi
20. DI Stefano
19. Matthaus
18. Denis Law
17. Socrates
16. Xavi
15. Beckenbauer
14. Garrincha
13. Zico
12. Baggio
11. Puskas
10. Platini
9. Eusebio
8. Laudrup, the proper one.
7. George Best
6. William Ferguson Miller. GOD.
5. Zidane
4. Messi
3. Cruyff
2. Maradona
1. Pele

I can only assume Brian then? All the Aberdeen fans love Brian! [;)]

Going to take the same approach as Rinc as I feel a bit of a mug including folk I only know through clips & stories. So for me, that's basically the early 90s to the present.

1. Leo Messi
2. Zinedine Zidane
3. Paolo Maldini
4. Denis Bergkamp
5. Gianfranco Zola
6. Thierry Henry
7. Ryan Giggs
8. Romario
9. Roberto Baggio
10. Hristo Stoichkov
11. Xavi
12. Peter Schmeichel
13. Gheorge Hagi
14. Paul Scholes
15. Fat Ronaldo (had he maintained what he was doing pre world cup final 98 throughout his career - he would have made the top 5)
16, Roberto Carlos
17. Henrik Larsson
18. Edgar Davids
19. Rui Costa
20. Jurgen Klinsmann
21. Luis Figo
22. Brian Laudrup
22. Cafu
23. Paul Gascoigne
24. Andriy Shevchenko (although he was gash at Chelsea)
25. Matthias Sammer
26. Andreas Iniesta
27. Lillian Thuram
28. Pavel Nedved
29. Alan Shearer
30. Gary Speed

boaby -> RE: EMPIRE's top 100 Footballers of all time (17/2/2012 2:16:45 AM)

Good lord Qwerty. Brian? He wasn't the Messiah, just a diving floppy haired mink.

If I had to limit a list to players I'd seen in person, and seen be ace in person it'd be gash. It'd be a mulleted Torino striker, a skinheed sweeper fae Lokomotiv Moscow, Hamit Altintop, some blonde nipper fae the '92 German U-21 team, Poborsky, Nedved, Pat Nevin, Jesus McFadden and Aberdeen players.

Telly is telly is telly. Even black and white telly is telly.

I've seen every Brazil game in the '70 WC, highlights of Santos games, ither Brazil games and Escape to Victory. Plenty enough to have Pele ("should be spelled G-O-D") as no.1. All the Dutch games in '74, highlights of Ajax, Barca, Feynoord and listened to Cruyff and seen the fruits of his philosophy - enough to gauge his ability and understanding of the game.

Ye canna have a competition cried "top 100 Footballers of all time" if folk dinna consider all time.

The problem is unless I'm going to research all the players considered the greatest of all time and spend weeks upon weeks watching games of those players, then I'm not going to include them. I've read plenty of articles on those players but I'm not basing this on second hand evidence. And even though I've seen plenty of clips, that's all they are - clips.

jonson -> RE: EMPIRE's top 100 Footballers of all time (17/2/2012 12:17:20 PM)

I agree. That's why I've pretty much picked the players I've seen, who played in my football-watching lifetime. And a few personal heroes.
A Top 100 footballers of all time would be Pele and Maradona, and then the rest, I don't think there's any question of that. I sit near a bloke who insists John Charles is the greatest players he's ever seen bar none (and he's been watching football since the 50's) but I can honestly say hand on heart I've never seen a second of footage of him. Did he ever play at a World Cup? No.
I've put Zola ahead of Cantona. Madness, possibly, but Zola used to make me cry, he was that brilliant, he played with a massive smile on his face, and he had some of the most delicate touches I've ever seen. He is my favourite Premiership player of all time, but certinaly not the best.
Corleone's list above (and no offence intended) is a far more accurate Top 30 list, and from what I've "heard", his Top 10 looks about spot on. However, was Stanley Matthews better than Dennis Bergkamp? I'd argue not, but many people will say otherwise.
Messi better than George Best? Of course he is. Best wouldn't last 70 minutes at the pace nowadays, but then again Alex Ferghsuon wouldn't let him play pissed, so he'd be a completely different player.

I'm sticking with my favourite players, players I've watched live, players who made me jump around, it's far more interesting.

quote:

He's the best English player I've ever seen, in my opinion. He had his problems and could and should have done more in his career, but if we had a player with half his talent in the last 10 years we'd have done a bit more internationally.

Agree with this. I couldn't really vote for players who I've only read about, and besides if we followed the convention this would be a list just like all the other 100 Greatest Footballer lists. Pele/Maradona at the top and so on. Perhaps we should get older relatives to cast their votes, my stepdad's list would be wildly different from mine (it'd have Jimmy Greaves at #1 for a start).
