Figures.

Good film, didn't have a clue what was going to happen.

hubu_phonk -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (23/2/2012 3:13:38 PM)

Glad you enjoyed it Gimli [:)]

MovieAddict247 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (23/2/2012 8:13:48 PM)

Watched The Fallen Idol the other day. Thought the two leads were fantastic, and it really captures the confusion of truth and lies you get when you're young. Phillippe's run through the streets was beautifully shot too.

I really enjoyed it - for such a simple story, it's engrossing.

[sm=happy34.gif] Cool, cool.

Where did everyone get Blind Beast from? I''ve been wanting to see it for years.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (25/2/2012 4:38:03 PM)

Are you in the UK? It got a release on Yume pictures over here - they've done various collections like Suzuki etc and one of them is Masumura. It's under a fiver I think.

garvielloken -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (25/2/2012 4:47:24 PM)

Found it on Amazon, thanks. Don't know why I never checked for it there before to be honest, I guess I always thought of it as too obscure to get an English release. Thanks again.

Rebenectomy -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (26/2/2012 11:17:07 AM)

I'm enjoying Eureka, but am going into my third sitting of it. I keep falling asleep during it; probably a combination of watching it later at night after I get home from work, but also the calming sound of bird song and crickets. I swear to god, I hear that, coupled with the cosy sepia, and my eye lids slam down and I'm drooling into my brew within minutes.

hubu_phonk -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (1/3/2012 10:50:17 AM)

Well i finally saw Eureka. Wonderful film and a true contender at the moment. It was great to sit and watch a film that took it's time to tell it's story without overstating the fact, and was helped by a wonderful cast especially one of the main characters ( played by the fantastic Kōji Yakusho, an actor i will definitely be looking out for in more films). It had a great balance of drama, humour and poignancy that weaved effortlessly throughout.

And yes, that sepia choice. It was the first film I've seen shot like that and i found it a joy to watch because of it. It had all the wonderful tone of good ol' black and white, but what (little) it lost in going to sepia it gained in a wonderful sense of warmth and almost 'another worldliness'.

I would heartily recommend this film. A wonderful drama and a pleasure to watch, Good choice Elab [:)]

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (1/3/2012 11:05:30 AM)

Excellent - I'm so glad you enjoyed it. [:)]

Yakusho was the answer to a question I posed at the start of a list of the top films of the year 2000 that Rawlinson and I did in Lists and Top 10s- which actor starred in 3 of my choices (he also did a remake of Seance on a Wet Afternoon and Dora Heita, a samurai script co-written by some of Japan's greatest directors). He's also a great actor to follow through to experience work from some of Japan's best film-makers - Ichikawa, Imamura, a few with Kiyoshi Kurosawa and recently starred in both of Miike's samurai remakes (the Seven Samurai type knock-off and also, by coincidence, the remake of Hara-Kiri which was originally also done by one of Dora Heita's writers).

hubu_phonk -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (1/3/2012 11:24:57 AM)

I'll checking those out no doubt! I really enjoyed his acting and I've been a fan of Japanese cinema for ages, so i'll always rate their output highly. In regards to Eureka, it was nice to see a modern Japanese film that wasn't all "wham bam San kyuu ma'am"

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (1/3/2012 11:29:06 AM)

There is a lovely mood to the film - I think that's what makes the time pass so easily without notice, you just get so absorbed in the whole thing.

You might like to try Warm Water Under a Red Bridge - another modern Japanese oddity. [:)]

On the button there Elab. The mood is lovely and every element of the film was perfect for the journey. There was an almost bitter-sweet touch to certain parts which really grabs me (i'm a big fan of the bitter-sweet !) thanks for the suggestions [:D]

MovieAddict247 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (2/3/2012 9:56:23 PM)

Absolutely loved Tunes of Glory, Gimli. Great choice.

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (3/3/2012 5:28:22 AM)

I'm not used to so many people liking my choices. Somebody say they hate before I start getting delusions of grandeur!

jiraffejustin -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (6/3/2012 9:59:52 PM)

I've had a lot of things come up in my personal life, and I don't think I will be able to participate in this. I only got around to watching two of the films in this round. I'm really sorry about this.

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (7/3/2012 6:08:52 AM)

That reminds me, when's the close for this? I'm having grief getting hold of a few.

matty_b -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (7/3/2012 8:36:30 AM)

End of the month I think, Gimli.

Real life always comes first, justin. You're not the first to have to drop out, so don't beat yourself up about it. Hope everything is OK. [:)]

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (7/3/2012 8:42:51 AM)

Please let Casablanca stay in - it'd be too much of a risk that Assassination might benefit [:D]

matty_b -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (7/3/2012 8:47:18 AM)

[:D]

I think in the past it's been left up to the other voters to decide. If they feel strongly enough about the film, then they can still put in their top six, but others have felt if the nominator hasn't been able to watch the other films then they put that film last.

Depends what the lifers want to do, I suppose.

[sm=33.gif]

Precisely for that reason I think Casablanca should go.*

*actually I don't...I relish the competition.

Anyway, I hope all is well, Justin.

If memory serves, when Swords had to drop out a few rounds back Totoro was allowed to stay in competition.

matty_b -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (7/3/2012 2:09:01 PM)

It was, but I know at least one person decided to place it 12th on principle. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer, really, it's all personal preference. [:)]

TRM -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (7/3/2012 3:12:28 PM)

Yeah in the past we have always left the film in, but it something which has always been debated quite thoroughly between the lifetime members as to if it should be up to the voters to decide, or if we should just pull the film from the competition. We are just discussing this again at the moment, so there should be a decision shortly.

Thanks for letting us know this early Justin. I hope everything works out [:)]

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (7/3/2012 3:18:15 PM)

I'm not sure I trust your input to be unbiased, oh interesting av man [sm=33.gif]

TRM -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (7/3/2012 3:22:55 PM)

[:D]

I am definitely viewing the decision as one for all future HoFs and not looking at which film it is this time at all. [:(]

rawlinson -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (14/3/2012 9:53:21 PM)

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all about this, we've decided to remove Casablanca from the competition, so if you haven't watched it already, you don't need to. I want to stress this is nothing against Justin, we've kicked the decision around a few times in the past and it's just now we've finally decided to remove films. This is going to be the norm from now on, if someone has to drop out then the film gets removed as well. This does mean that the film will be able to be nominated again much sooner though.

Cool - it's good to get an offical verdict on this.

When's the deadline for this round?

rawlinson -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (15/3/2012 12:00:38 PM)

End of the month for round 1.

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (15/3/2012 11:54:35 PM)
