I would agree with what's said about 'his and hers' but I wasn't overly annoyed at it. I loved the seamless ageing of the film, going from the very young to the very old and I'm a sucker for the static serenity of the camera work. I'd even agree with the line by some chump from the Guardian as the film being a "cinematic tone poem"

But yeah it did seem that the intentional absence of the male counterpart only made their presence stronger in this 'men, women & child circle of life' tale, and a bit boring in it's quaint manner. I would of watched it on the telebox if i saw it but may not of bothered going to watch it on the big screen.

But not a bad watch all in all

To me it just seemed like a wasted opportunity. You have all these women and you limit the scope to men. I wouldn't have minded if it had revealed some deeper gender insights, but it didn't really do that, instead coming across as frustratingly old fashioned, even when talking to the younger women.

This round will be as far as I get by the look of it. [:D]

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (14/2/2012 1:08:35 PM)

I actually really found it difficult to balance in my viewed list for the year. If I split it in half, one would be highish the other would be near bottom - I really did get a lot more out of the more elderly segment of the film and I think that came across really well.

paul_ie86 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (14/2/2012 2:06:30 PM)

Yeah, that is the best bit of the film. When I seen it in the cinema I don't think there was a dry eye during it.

I'm not taking part in this one, but I have just watched The Shout. Very good.

Indeed it is. You should have taken part.

matty_b -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (14/2/2012 4:27:03 PM)

Nah, needed a break from all the whore vote abuse I get. [:D]

Rebenectomy -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (15/2/2012 12:57:10 AM)

The Shout: Nicely weird, really excellent. Performances are spot on, and the ambiguity afforded to the story, in both term of timeline and character positioning made this a relentless head melt, but an enjoyable one at that.

Deviation -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (17/2/2012 1:25:17 AM)

Gimli, more noms like Tunes of Glory, less noms like Laurel and Hardy. Ok?

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (17/2/2012 1:33:51 AM)

Someone with the good sense to like Tunes of Glory should also like Laurel and Hardy.

paul_ie86 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (17/2/2012 11:52:04 AM)

OH GOD I'VE I NOT WATCHED ANY OF THE FILMS YET. What's the deadline?

rawlinson -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (17/2/2012 11:53:48 AM)

End of March.

Watch mine first. It's the best.

Don't people normally leave it till 3 days before deadline before saying that? [:D]

MovieAddict247 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (17/2/2012 2:43:01 PM)

I thought The Shout was fascinating and really enjoyable. Great performances (both Bates and Hurt were fantastic), and the sounds were incredible (nice to see something other than visuals being important). I loved the ambiguity as well; it was done well so not it didn't annoy me (I might seek out the short story too). Also, it's a film I'd never heard of before, so it was great going in with no prior thoughts about it.

hubu_phonk -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (18/2/2012 11:44:38 AM)

Watched Blue Valentine last night. I really enjoyed it. To me it wasn't the most complicated or original romantic drama I've seen, with some story lines being tried and tested countless times. That was a minor detail when compared to the naturalistic direction, charm and acting displayed throughout the film and this really brought it home, as i was really able to identify to some of the situations, feelings and actions of the two characters at certain moments during the show.

* Super-dooper mild aesthetic but awesome spoiler mentioned below*

Both leads were great and it was my first watch of this Ryan Gosling i've heard about, and i enjoyed his performance as well as his bitchin' american eagle sweater. This film did leave me with one disappointment though. The fact that nowhere in Northern Ireland has a hotel with a 'future room' . How awesome would that be.

All in all a good film and i would recommend it to anyone wanting an easy to watch emotional piece of film making, with good acting.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (18/2/2012 2:03:07 PM)

Top 100 for the year or Film Reviews? Are you doing a record thing in the Top 100? There are loads more posters in there this year [:)]

I hadn't realised people couldn't delete their own posts in here, though. There are a couple of sub-forums with funny rules, mind, but Mods generally can't see them unless told.

hubu_phonk -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (18/2/2012 2:12:17 PM)

Cheers, was thinking of doing a wee list. I'm enjoying all this HoF carry on. Some fantastic films.

Well i know for a fact that the next film on the bill is yours Elab, and i'm looking forward to it. Sounds interesting

Not much point in deleting now as the rest of the thread wouldn't make much sense, plus how else would we point and laugh at your forum misdirection?[:D]

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (20/2/2012 10:17:14 AM)

Eureka. Unless it involves Hobbits, there is no need for a film to be this long! Good though.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (20/2/2012 10:29:58 AM)

I have no idea how positive that statement is supposed to be[:D]

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (21/2/2012 12:11:04 AM)

Very positive. I liked it a lot, just a few times the leisurely pace seemed a bit too leisurely. But it was great.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (21/2/2012 12:22:03 AM)

I am glad. [:)]

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (22/2/2012 5:36:58 AM)

I'm halfway through Blind Beast. Are we sure Rawlinson didn't nominate this?

rawlinson -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (22/2/2012 1:59:11 PM)

It was in my top 300. [:D]
