Professor Moriarty -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (30/1/2012 5:16:40 PM)

Seems like I've saved a fortune not being in this round. I've only seen 3 of these.

The Assasination (sic [;)]) of Jesse James I found really boring I'm afraid. Its quite interesting that we get this the round after Bonnie and Clyde, to which I feel it owes a lot.

The Butcher Boy is a really interesting choice. A very powerful film, with a stunning central performance.

Casablanca will either win by a mile or get a strong vote whore backlash. Of course it is so well known that everyone knows its weaknesses, but c'mon its one of the finest movies ever made!

It's certainly in the top 1000. [:D]

From you, that's actually quite high [:D]

I started to write a more detailed response. Than half way through realised that I'd put the start of the Maltese Falcon at the beginning of the film in my head [:D] And if Casablanca has a failing we all know that Sydney Greenstreet should have got way more camera time.

rawlinson -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (30/1/2012 5:36:22 PM)

[:D]

I actually do like Casablanca a lot. Just not as much as pretty much everyone else in the world.

Punishment park - I see this seems to have been reissued? I've got the first Eureka release. fascinating, sometimes brilliant, but it'd be an odd choice for the first Watkins to get in

It was released on Blu Ray last week - if anyone needs a copy of the DVD send me a PM.

My reason for picking this Watkins was because the War Game and Culloden felt like they had been covered in a number of places. I thought that this was a timely film, and not anywhere near as long as Munch. It has also been in pop culture with MIA's video Born Free (the one with the gingers).

It is also just bloomin' excellent and needs to be watched by more people.

nomimalone -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (30/1/2012 6:54:18 PM)

An interesting collection of nominations.

Assassination of Jesse James - beautiful to look at, bored me silly.
Butcher Boy - I saw this when it came out and loved it, but I haven't seen it since.
Casablanca - It's good, but it does meander in places.
Eureka - not seen.
The Fallen Idol - not seen.
His n Hers - Loved this. I got a free ticket to see this and wasn't sure about going. I'm so glad I did.
Hour-glass sanitorium - not seen.
Moju - not seen.
Punishment park - not seen.
The Shout - not seen.
Tunes of Glory - not seen.
Whisper of the Heart - not seen. I'm not a fan of the Ghibli I've seen though.

Just a warning to to TRM, EVERYONE in this film has has the same accent as me. [:D]

Does that mean he can't understand you or that your accent makes him melt? [:D]

[:D]

At least there are subtitles on a dvd...

I havent seen many this round:
Jesse James - I thought it was pretty decent upon release, but couldnt understand all of the hype it got on here as the best film of the year.
Casablanca - I have been sulking ever since this nom was mentioned.
The Fallen Idol - I hope this makes it through the first round. Great film.
Whisper of the Heart - My nom.

MovieAddict247 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (30/1/2012 7:50:45 PM)

I've only seen two.

The Assassination of Jesse James - blatantly the best film in this round.
Casablanca - occasionally wonderful.

Nice list of film though; I haven't heard of half of them and am looking forward to taking part.

My Winnipeg was obviously the film of 2007. [:D] Then Secret Sunshine.

I will get around to Secret Sunshine one of these days [:D] My Winnipeg just about makes my top 50 of 2007.

jiraffejustin -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (30/1/2012 8:59:22 PM)

Yes, nominating Casablanca is vote-whorish, but c'mon, I can't really think of many films that deserve a spot in a film hall of fame than this one.

Pigeon Army -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (30/1/2012 9:02:41 PM)

Assassination
Butcher Boy
Casablanca
Blind Beast

All great films, but all different enough to make choosing between them a tough job.

Not seen the rest, but looking forward to them, especially His n Hers which I've heard so much good about, and The Shout which is a favourite of my husband.

I like that you've only seen four of them and one of them's the pink film. [:D]

It's an interesting round, might try to get a few of these in. I'm backing The Fallen Idol for the win, even though I haven't seen it, because it's very significant in one of Lists & Top 10's most memorable moments, the Dan Schneider thread. [:D]

We owe it to Jayb to get Fallen Idol to the final. [:D]

Rebenectomy -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (30/1/2012 9:34:47 PM)

I've just remembered that I've sort of seen Whisper of the Heart before, or at least it was on in a house once where I was but there were people talking over it. I remember something about at violin.

Hourglass sanitarium - ummmm

You ruin my plans to watch Love Exposure this February by nominating something equally long and all I get is an ummmm?[>:]

Here's a very rawlinson-esque sexual(ly frustrated) thought piece on what I think on the films nominated which are not mine.

The Assassination of Jesse James- Blew me away when I first saw it, more than than a blow job by Lily Thai. One of the best film from last decade.

The Butcher Boy- The poster makes it look like an Irish Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a bit like spending a night at rawlinson's mum house then.

Casablanca- One of my most favorite films, beating things like Anal Attackers 4.

Eureka- I'm not watching the bizarre four hour Catholic sexual frustration skirt peeking Japanese film because of this supposedly marvelous movie. Thanks elab.

The Fallen Idol- Was this ghost-directed by Orson Welles? How many tits does it have?

His n' Hers- This better be a porno.

Moju- YES JAPANESE SEXUAL WEIRDNESS YES I hope

Punishment Park- I think this is a documentary about having sex with Kesha.

The Shout- I have no idea what this is but it sounds intriguing and I want to try, a feeling I haven't felt since when I first heard the words "Miles' sister".

Tunes of Glory- Or SO RAWLINSON'S MUM CALLS THEM!!! LOLOLOLOOL

Whisper of the Heart- One of the most heart-warming films I've ever seen.

Deviation -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 4:35:33 AM)

WAIT A SECOND RAWLINSON DIDN'T NOMINATE THE MOST BIZARRE FILM IN THIS ROUND OH GOD THE END IS NIGH

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 5:34:07 AM)

Jesse James - Great
Butcher Boy - Great
Casablanca - Great
Tunes of Glory - Great
Whisper of the Heart - Great

Not bad.

Believe me, you're watching the better film. And Love Exposure might lead you to the loose trilogy of Cold Fish and GUilty of Romance, and the last will likely leave you with a very nasty taste in the mouth. I'm doing you a favour. [:)]

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 11:21:45 AM)

Hurrah - Tesco rental came through and His & Hers and Butcher Boy on their way. [:)]

Gimli The Dwarf -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 11:28:57 AM)

Why can't I rent The Hour-Glass Sanitorium, Moju, The Shout or Punishment Park [>:]

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 11:43:10 AM)

THe latter is quite odd - I don't know why rental places would get rid of their old copy just because there was a new one-  but the new one is out and rental places normally stock Eureka? I checked another of their dual formats though and Tesco are only showing it as Blu Ray, another shows as both, another shows as the old release with nothing on the new one. Really variable.

Blockbuster still have the old release.

Hourglass Sanitorium should be fine - and if you're searching for Moju you might want to try Blind Beast, which is its normal title over here. It's one of the ones that's normally referred to by the translation.

I guess The SHout is the purchase BUT do can you try the free month for Lovefilm streaming? Then you can watch it free then cancel.

MonsterCat -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 12:41:10 PM)

If you're having trouble finding it, The Shout is up on Youtube.

Click here

It's the whole film in one go.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 1:37:49 PM)

Casablanca is on at 3pm this afternoon on TCM and 2am on TCM2.

Found Moju now, thanks! Hourglass as well, but I swear that 4 hours when I looked it was listed as reserve only. Punishment Park, I had that just a few months back but sent it back unseen. Should have kept hold of it! The Shout is available for me streaming on LF, but I hate watching feature films online. Much prefer the luxury of seeing them in whichever room of the house I please. More importantly, I'm always tempted to open a second window and do other stuff while I watch, which doesn't really do them justice [:D]

MovieAddict247 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 2:48:33 PM)

Lovely, my library has The Fallen Idol, Tunes of Glory, Punishment Park and The Butcher Boy (and obviously Casablanca).

[:D] You should put your choice for the last round in again sometime though. It's the best film you'd nominated.

elab49 -> RE: Hall of Fame 14: Round One (31/1/2012 4:01:37 PM)

I never even thought of that when I nominated - it just doesn't feel that excessive a running time to me.

Certainly shorter than it took me to reword that last bit to avoid 'oo er missus' and sig quotes [:D]

I have about three films in mind for HOF 15. It's tough picking just one, but I suppose I have about three to four months to make my mind up.
