elab49 -> Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 7:12:32 PM)

A top 10 is the norm, but if you can't think of that many, or think 2012 is going to be such a stonking year, go ahead.

So far I don't have much of a list.

The Hobbit
Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, or whatever they've changed it too.
Stoker

From last year I'd add Le Havre, This Must Be the Place and Amigo.

Whistler -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 7:26:26 PM)

The Dark Knight Rises
The Hobbit
Django Unchained
Prometheus
Skyfall
The Avengers
World War Z
The Hunger Games
The Expendables 2
The Amazing Spider-Man

2012 is going to be amazing.

garvielloken -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 7:51:19 PM)

Prometheus
The Hobbit
Terrence Malicks The Voyage Of Time
Whatever Takashi Miike comes up with after 13 Assassins. I think he rediscovered his form with 13 Assassins and as far as I know he's really into making samurai films at the moment.

Other than that there is nothing else I can think of that pops out at me.

The follow-up that will probably make it over here - by odd coincidence, given our discussion yesterday- is actually a remake of Kobayashi's Hara-Kiri [:D]

NinjaShortbread212 -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 8:02:39 PM)

Most anticipated date for a release? December 2012. [sm=happy34.gif]

Snake-Eyes -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 8:09:18 PM)

THE EXPENDABLES 2

A BULLET TO THE HEAD

PROMETHEUS

THE GREY

THE RAID

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: A NEW DIMENSION

elab49 -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 8:14:03 PM)

I see Hyams is doing the universal Soldier thing again. The last was unexpectedly watchable.

Ok, now it's high on my must see list. My only worry is like you said, it might get distrubution over here. Back in the early '00s almost everything Miike did was released here, but since about 2005 a lot of his stuff never seems to make it past Asia. Makes me wonder what other great stuff from Japan, Korea etc never reaches us.

elab49 -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 8:20:22 PM)

Most of the Korean stuff I watch never does. If you relied on UK releases about the only thing you'd have seen from 2011 was Yellow Sea, if you managed to catch it at a festival. I use streaming sites and R3 DVD sites to keep up. and check the weekly releases to highlight films I want to catch at some point (ditto Japanese).

How are the R3 DVDs for english subtitles? I used to buy R3 releases of US films because they were sometimes out earlier in Asia. Never tried domestic R3 films though.

scarface666brooksy!! -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 8:30:55 PM)

Django Unchained, Dark Knight Rises, Men In Black 3, Avengers, Gangster Squad, This is Forty, World War Z

And the customary film remake I'm most horrified about this year:

Total frakking Recall [&:][:@]

elab49 -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 8:31:43 PM)

It's rare for them not to be fine, especially now  - they seem to aim at the market in the west, and most official releases will have perfect subtitles (often because there will be hopes of theatrical release - 2 of the big entertainment companies have just had agreements in the US for releases, and also for films to go onto Netflix). Even the official TV releases are fine (although you have to watch out for the Chinese releases for TV - often the last few epis have gone into some kind of auto-translator with ridiculously bad results!). The last problem one I can remember was years back in a Hong Sang-Soo set, but that was a pretty rare problem. Most of my Korean films are non-UK/US discs.

garvielloken -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 8:48:19 PM)

Cool, thanks for the info. Your knowledge on Asian cinema is really good. I'm guessing most of your film collection or most of your favourite films come from the far east. For me it was a revelation discovering Asian film. There really is a vast library of stuff to discover that never even gets any mention in the West.

elab49 -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 8:55:37 PM)

It's nothing compared to the likes of Gram123 or Jasiri, and I'm really crap on martial arts films, or a lot of HK stuff.

Oddly I'd never totted up the films in my top 100, but there are about 18 from East Asia, with 3 in the top 10. [:)]

I don't know if you've had a chance to look at this - it's one of the many forum voted lists we have in this part of the site.

A Separation

S'already in the bargain DVD prices over here [8|][:D]

So that's what they've called the Pirates! film - I've seen the trailer several times now and never noticed!

MonsterCat -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (29/12/2011 11:02:40 PM)

Had a look at the films coming out over the next year and there's not a lot that really excites me.

Prometheus
Some low budget indie thing called "The Dark Knight Rises" Anyone know anything about that?
Shame - Steve McQueen's new one.
The Artist

That's pretty much all I can think of right now.

EDIT - Actually, I'm interested in Seth "Family Guy" MacFarlane's directorial debut, Ted. Hopefully that will be a better showcase for Mark Wahlberg's comedic skills than the awful The Other Guys.

Isn't that meant to be a potential Oscar winner?[&:]

It made good money, was pretty loved and earned a lot of accliam. It's also just being released in the States. Didn't expect it to end up in dvd so fast.

Yeah, I prefer the book's name.

I think so - I was just taunting Deviation again with his massively delayed theatrical releases [:D]

ElephantBoy -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (30/12/2011 1:24:02 PM)

Yeah A Separation was about summer time, what confused me was on the poster it was described as one of the must see movies of the summer. Of course I agree as far quaity goes, but surely that sort of quote on the poster makes it sound like a Back to the Future style romp![:D]

Anyway on the up side 2012 might be one of the only years in living momery where the Oscar goes to a deserving world cinema release.

As for the year ahead, well unless hollywood drops this sequal/reboot/sequal/reboot/bought back after twenty years pharse times are looking grim.

Happy 2012 to you all.

Mmmm - I noticed Of Gods and Men was on the eligibility list [:D]

rawlinson -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (30/12/2011 2:17:20 PM)

I get the feeling it'll be someone like Kaneto Shindo who takes the foreign language Oscar.

elab49 -> RE: Most Anticipated Films - 2012 (30/12/2011 2:28:25 PM)

Given their apparent habit of not putting stuff through based on films but names, I'd expect to see Pernila August on the longlist at the very least.

The Front Line probably wasn't Korea's best option this year, but you can understand why they went with it.
