MonsterCat -> MonsterCat's 75 favourite albums (18/10/2011 2:12:50 PM)

This is what boredom brought on by unemployment will do to a person. [:D]

With this thread, I will be pandering to the masses and trying to make myself look cool and hip by listing my Top 75 favourite LPs.

Also - I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to writing reviews, so I'll keep the blurbs short and sweet, or I'll just copy and paste from a music review website.

Happy reading, folkies!

I've got my fingers crossed for the inclusion of Motley Crue's Shout At The Devil.

I have their Greatest Hits LP. Probably won't make the cut, though. [:)]

No. 75 - Tenacious D / Tenacious D (2002 / Epic)

Actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass unleash the power of rock with their slickly produced and frequently hilarious debut album.

"Managing an odd simultaneous fusion of stupid and clever, acoustic-guitar-wielding rockers Jack Black and Kyle Gass mingle songs and skits on their slick, gleefully profane, Dust Brothers-produced debut." The AV Club

"Granted, it sounds like Journey being raped by Ronnie James Dio, but you have to admit that’s intriguing." Drawer B

Standout tracks - Tribute; Wonderboy; Double Team; Fuck Her Gently

No. 74 - The Bluetones / Expecting to Fly (1996/Superior Quality Recordings)

The first album from one of Britpop's most overlooked bands is brimming with well crafted rock/pop gems.

"After The Stone Roses impressed few with the terminally mediocre Second Coming, The Bluetones were hailed as the successors to their jangly indie throne. Four London boys that carried themselves with the sense of lofty expectation that was so central to the Stone Roses' mystique, their debut Expecting To Fly surfed the exultant wave of nostalgia that was all too prevalent in the wake of Blur's Parklife and Oasis' Definitely Maybe. It's no surprise, then, that today Expecting To Fly sounds like a rather excellent Britpop period piece. Breakthrough single "Slight Return" kicks its heels with adolescent glee, and "Vampire" and "Things Change" are delivered with an chipper enthusiasm that neatly skirts Britpop's more pompous excesses." Amazon

Standout tracks - Slight Return; The Fountainhead; Bluetonic; Cut Some Rug

Not a fan of Tenacious D.

The Bluetones were decent enough.

The movie is pants. I think the joke only works with the music.

Expecting to Fly was the second album I bought.[:)]

No.73 - OK Go / Of the Blue Colour of the Sky (2009 / Paracadute)

"One gets the feeling that, while this probably won’t be remembered as OK Go’s masterpiece, it might be fondly recalled as the moment the band stopped chasing the power pop dream in favour of unlocking their own brand of pop power." BBC Music Reviews

Standout tracks - Back from Khatmandu; Needing/Getting; This Too Shall Pass; White Knuckles

What was the first?

impqueen -> RE: MonsterCat's 75 favourite albums (18/10/2011 4:26:37 PM)

Spiders by Space, October 1996 I bought ETF with my 12th Birthday cash a month later.

MonsterCat -> RE: MonsterCat's 75 favourite albums (18/10/2011 4:27:58 PM)

I think I had that album, too.

No. 72 - Vampire Weekend / Vampire Weekend (2008 / XL)

"Vampire Weekend have crafted an educated, endlessly imaginative and different piece of work that's arguably the first truly great album of the year. And you won't even need to wear a crucifix or garlic clove to hear it." BBC Music Reviews

Standout tracks - Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa; A-Punk; The Kids Don't Stand a Chance; Oxford Comma

No. 71 - The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003 / Universal)

"The songs explode with creativity, fusing jazz riffs, tribal rhythms, hardcore bursts of noise, and addictive rock hooks into one of the most compelling discs of the year." Entertainment Weekly

"As nuts as they are, The Mars Volta recall the raw potential rock held before it was castrated by radio programmers and corporate control." Mojo

Stand out tracks - Inertiatic Esp; Roulette Dares; Televators; Drunkship of Lanterns

Tenacious D - Not a huge fan, but maybe that's partly because a friend played Tribute to death at the time.

The Bluetones - Not bad, some songs I really like.

Ok Go - I like Ok Go a lot. Gimli shall forever hate them because of The Muppets cover. [:D]

Vampire Weekend - I still haven't heard the album in full. I like what I have heard.

The Mars Volta - Not a fan.

MonsterCat -> RE: MonsterCat's 75 favourite albums (18/10/2011 11:02:11 PM)

Gimli has heard of OK Go? Blimey.

rawlinson -> RE: MonsterCat's 75 favourite albums (18/10/2011 11:06:11 PM)

Only because of The Muppets cover, I think. [:D]

impqueen -> RE: MonsterCat's 75 favourite albums (18/10/2011 11:06:39 PM)

Not heard of Ok Go or The Mars Volta but I'm a big fan of Vampire Weekend my favourite track would be M79 though.

No. 70 - Mogwai / Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (2011 / Rock Action Records)

"Every band should mature like the Mogwai lads: still inventive, still challenging themselves and still insanely loud." Rolling Stone

"Yeah, it's been done before, but Mogwai have an astounding command of the songwriting chops necessarily to do it right, which they've remarkably done yet again without sounding in the least but stale." Under the Radar

Standout tracks - Death Rays; Rano Pano; George Square Thatcher Death Party; San Pedro

I was going to say that myself [:D]

However, it was only after I saw The Muppet song I realised I had heard them before.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5bXuyBAoUY

I actually had that song on my mp3 player for a while. Go me.

Don't know any of the others listed so far besides Tenacious D.

No. 69 - Bon Iver / For Emma, Forever Ago (2008 / Jagjaguwar)

"Wisconsin singer-songwriter Justin Vernon, who records as Bon Iver (a bastardized version of the French phrase for "good winter"), still manages to put his own stamp on a moribund genre with his quietly startling debut, For Emma, Forever Ago." The AV Club

"For Emma captures the sound of broken and quiet isolation, wraps it in a beautiful package, and delivers it to your door with a beating, bruised heart." All Music Guide

Standout tracks - Skinny Love; Re: Stacks; For Emma; The Wolves (Act I & II)

Try to catch them in concert if you can. I saw them in Brixton at the beginning of the year and it was like a religious experience.

[image]http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/080623/lcd-sound-system_l.jpg[/image]

No. 68 - LCD Soundsystem / Sound of Silver (2008 - DFA/EMI)

"Make no mistake – the beats are still rigid, dabbling in taut funk and squelching electro as much as snotty punk moves and glorious polyrhtyhms. These nine songs, however, ring with a clarity of purpose and a true intent that was previously altogether lacking, presenting a far more cohesive image of Murphy and his many strengths." Dusted

"While opening track 'Get Innocuous' gently apes his own 'Losing My Edge' for the first minute and a half, the rest of the LP gradually moves onwards and upwards; either improving and tightening the previous template, or trying new things altogether." Drowned in Sound

Standout tracks - Someone Great; Get Innocuous; Time to Get Away; North American Scum

No. 67 - Bill Hicks / Arizona Bay (1997 / Arizona Bay Productions)

"Boy, I love talkin' about the Kennedy Assassination, man. That's my favorite topic. You know why? Because for me it's a great archetypal example of how the totalitarian government who rules this planet partitions out information in such a
way that we, the masses, are forced to base our conclusions on erroneous... Oh, I'm sorry, wrong meeting. I thought this was the meeting at the docks, no? Oh shit. That's tomorrow night." Bill Hicks

rawlinson -> RE: MonsterCat's 75 favourite albums (19/10/2011 3:40:01 PM)

Looooove LCD Soundsystem.

Bill Hicks - one of the greatest comedians of all time and it's nice to see some stand-up included. I hope Rant is still to come.

MonsterCat -> RE: MonsterCat's 75 favourite albums (19/10/2011 3:41:06 PM)

Yeah, there will be more Bill at some point.

No.66 - The Strokes / Is This It (2001 / Rough Trade)

"The album is certainly one of 2001's finest, most memorable releases. It just shouldn't be billed beyond what it is: a deliciously fun romp that draws heavily upon influences like the Velvet Underground, Television, and the Stooges." Billboard

"A heartily uplifting brew of scruffy street style, swear words and stammering pop tunes which sweat musical history." Mojo

Standout tracks - Last Nite; Hard to Explain; Trying Your Luck; New York City Cops

Music video for Last Nite
