Carpets. I do love a cinema with carpets. Art Deco popcorn machine thingies. Stairs. Stairs down into a theatre. So much more style and soul than a corridor of dimensions that indicate one can only be in an steel pre-fab B&Q would be chuffed with.

Now? now it's had it's heart ripped out.

I've got to say that the Electric in Birmingham has to be my favourite. Apparently it's the oldest working cinema in the country and at one time was in a bit of a sorry state but the guy who owns it now is doing a great job. It's a lovely old art deco building and one of the few cinemas in the country that doesn't sell popcorn and allows you to take your beer/wine to your seat (so you don't have to put it in a paper cup and sneak it in). And if you book one of the sofa seats you can text message your food and drink orders to the bar!

It also has one of the best programmes with a nice mixture of blockbusters and arthouse releases.

Another vote for Cineworld Haymarket. Screen 1 is gorgeous and screen 3 is cozy. But screen 2... oh dear! Everything is at a bizarre angle - you have to sit on the left to be vaguely centre to and head on to the screen.
