The Borgias is Showtime's new drama that stars Jeremy Irons and aired last night on Sky Atlantic with a double bill episode. Who watched it and what do you think?

Saltire -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (14/8/2011 5:11:42 AM)

Got it taped for the old dear and was gonna watch it, but heard its gonna be like the Tudors - not very factual and too much soap and sex. Dont think I'll bother. Shame too as the Borgia's were really an interesting family.

NCC1701A -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (14/8/2011 2:58:37 PM)

watched the first episode and did not like it that much.

Rhubarb -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (14/8/2011 3:08:47 PM)

Apparently the Catholic Church is corrupt in it? Apparently they turn a blind eye to great wrongdoing in order to maintain power and money? I think it will be a leap of the imagination too far to be honest.

princessa -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (14/8/2011 3:58:51 PM)

Watched bits of it.  I liked the customes.  I think this is one of those programmes that will get better with time.

blackduck -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (15/8/2011 10:41:21 AM)

So far its..ok.

It seems a bit too focused what people are doing and not enough on why. People seem to do things because the story requires it and not for any logical reasons. And some of the green screen work is a tiny bit off.

There is a lot of good stuff (Jeremy Irons for one) so hopefully it'll hit it's stride as it goes on, but so far it's not loving up tothe standards set by Game of Thrones or Pillars of the earth

MI Cruise -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (15/8/2011 12:03:35 PM)

I watched both episodes yesterday and also feel disappointed by the lack of a decent story, most characters had very little to do excluding Jeremy Irons and his eldest son. I will watch on but I doubt that this show will be that good.

boaby -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (15/8/2011 12:34:39 PM)

Pretty shallow so far.

And rushed.

Hope it gets better.

demoncleaner -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (15/8/2011 2:12:55 PM)

I thought both episodes were incredibly dull without so much as a spark of inspiration or wit.  Bland characters in an unfleshed world by way of a couple of principal interior sets.   I can't see how Jeremy Irons was particularly good either.  He said his lines I guess.  That's all he seemed up for.  Can't believe Neil Jordan created, wrote and directed this.  Feels like a bland chore in the making of it, and certainly was to watch.  It might get better but I'll never know.

discodave101 -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (15/8/2011 3:35:36 PM)

Got it recorded, but by the looks of the comments I think I'll let this one stack up a bit and see if it improves before I start.

jonson -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (15/8/2011 4:15:10 PM)

Would be unfair to critisise this after only seeing 1 episode, but so far it was.......ok.
Jeremy Irons is passable, but nothing groundbreaking, his son had a more interesting character, and is obviously going to end up knobbing his sister at some point, although this being the Catholic church I doubt many eyebrows will be raised.
I'll persist with it, they usually get better.

James2183 -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (16/8/2011 8:46:47 PM)

The only thing I could think of when watching this was that Ezio Auditore was going to jump out and kill someone [:D]

That and the older son looks like the guy from the Carling adverts

Rofl yeah I was thinking that too!

Btw Lucrezia and Cesare did indeed have an incestuous relationship apparently irl so I'm sure you'll see plenty of those shenanigans going on.

Lazy wolf eyes -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (17/8/2011 12:52:16 PM)

Not sure what to make of it so far. I'll keep watching, but it's odd that despite the fascinating history and all the murder and bonking, it was a tad dull at times. The costumes are beautiful and the actings perfectly fine though, so I'll give it a chance to bed in.

Yeah I'm the same. Its similar in that way to Game Of Thrones/Boardwalk Empire, if you cant get immersed in the story or think its boring, then there's always the scenery, costumes and tits!! [;)]

musht -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (18/8/2011 12:10:39 PM)

I was really disappointed with, although I don't know why. I think my expectations were completely unjustified. Jeremy Irons is very good but I think the story is letting him down along with the other actors (mainly the lads playing his sons - they're really annoying). I started watching the second episode but couldn't get into to it so I switched it off. Doubt I'll be switching it on again any time soon

I've only watched the first two episodes so far but 100% /\ This!

It gets a bit better than this but for the most part i was thinking one of two things throughout the series:

1) This is ok but its not even half as good as Game of Thrones. When's the next episode of that on?
2) Haven't played Assassins Creed in a while.

I wouldn't miss it if it didn't come back.

CORLEONE -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (24/8/2011 10:56:03 PM)

3rd episode was better but can't say I'm gripped yet.

princessa -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (28/8/2011 7:40:12 PM)

Just watched the fourth ep.  I like others am surprised that this drama has quite a few boring moments.

The only character i like are the pope's mistress and Lucrezia.  I think the others aren't as fascinating to me.  I think the programme is being let down by the pacing and the script.  This should be compelling but it isn't.

Poor Lucreztia her husband is a nasty vicious fool for raping her.  I don't think he'll be around for long after this.

BTW i love the costumes and the look of this - i'll keep watching from time to time.

princessa -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (25/9/2011 6:01:46 PM)

Watched ep 8 - awful just awful.

So it was Lucrezia Borgia who saved the Popes army from being sliced by the French?  Anyway... Holliday Grainger is normally good in this series but in this ep even she was pretty bad.  I love the costumes but i agree with the comments that it is being let down by rushed storylines and very bad scripts.

buffster28 -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (26/9/2011 8:44:17 PM)

it's not been too bad, the lat couple of eps have been better with more action , have to see how the finale plays out.

Your Funny Uncle -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (15/10/2011 8:01:21 AM)

I can't decide if I'll stick with this for the second season. I enjoyed it on the whole but it was boring in places, let down by a clunky script and some poor acting (that includes Irons). The finale also seemed like a let down although the settings and costumes were fantastic

princessa -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (11/6/2012 8:43:44 PM)

For those of you still watching this. The new series starts on Sky Atlantic on Sunday at 10pm.

I will watch a few eps but mainly for the costumes. Its nothing special but the sets and costumes make up for the bad acting and poor scripts.

BTW - David Alpay who played Mark Smeaton in the Tudors will be playing a character who woos Lucrezia in future eps.

buffster28 -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (1/7/2012 4:28:33 PM)

Season 2's coming sometime in July - the trailers have started but they just say JUly so far.

Timon -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (1/7/2012 4:30:46 PM)

I have seen the whole of Season 2. It is a massive step up in quality from the first season.

Really enjoyed it.

Your Funny Uncle -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (17/7/2012 8:59:35 AM)

Season Two starts on Saturday [:)]

buffster28 -> RE: The Borgias - UK Speed (22/7/2012 11:28:21 AM)

and it was a pretty decent start to the season, esp the opening a poisoning and murder of a kid in the first 10 mins - nothing like starting how you mean to go on.
