H.G though breking records in US is still doing only fairly well over here it's nowhere near H.P or Twiggies opening numbers so maybe it's not as worldwide a hit as everyone's predicting.

Yeah, it's an odd one - if it was doing as well worldwide we'd be at Ghost Protocol numbers right now - 2 weeks in!

Rgirvan44 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (7/4/2012 2:13:49 AM)

The readership wasn't as big, but this is still a huge movie. It has already made as much as Star Trek in its entire run. In two weeks. It is a hit - and likely the sequel will be even bigger.

azzman1984 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (7/4/2012 5:28:30 PM)

Top 10 worldwide so far:

1. The Hunger Games $384,3 million
2. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island $313,3 million
3. The Intouchables $301,6 million
4. John Carter $255,5 million
5. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax $230,9 million
6. Safe House $195,3 million
7. The Vow $173,8 million
8. Underworld Awakening $160,1 million
9. The Secret World of Arrietty $144,9 million
10. This Means War $136,2 million

jackcarter -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (7/4/2012 7:59:38 PM)

Sutty - the estimates were for US/overall ww, not ‘between’

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting otherwise - I just thought it was an interesting facet to the Hunger Games phenomenon.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (8/4/2012 11:29:40 PM)

It is now at half a billion WW.

directorscut -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (11/4/2012 10:46:27 PM)

Titanic 3D has the 2nd biggest opening day ever in China (behind ... ugh... Transformers 3): http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3416&p=.htm

Doesn't it make you feel young again?

directorscut -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (16/4/2012 1:45:30 PM)

Titanic has just become the second movie ever to cross $2 billion: http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=main&id=titanic.htm

Of course adjusted for inflation that would be closer to $3.5 billion.

st3veebee -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (16/4/2012 2:03:19 PM)

Is boxofficemojo.com correct: has Titanic 3D actually made nearly 800 million??

directorscut -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (16/4/2012 3:10:29 PM)

No, it's made $200 million so far. They're including the original US gross for some reason.

Weekend Report: 'Avengers' Smashes Records

It's been clear for a while that The Avengers would be a box office success, though few people could have foreseen this opening. The superhero team-up got off to an unprecedented $200.3 million start this weekend, which obliterates the previous all-time weekend record set by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 last Summer ($169.2 million).

TDKR is going to have its work cut out to top that.

It could probably do it. And even if it doesn't it'll still be a great film, one hopes.

Well that's the most important part obviously. [:D]

But seriously I doubt TDKR will be able to top The Avengers opening weekend simply because it wont be in 3D hence no jumped up ticket prices. And even if more people go to see it (which may be unlikely as the new Batman films aren't as kid friendly as the Marvel cannon) it'll still gross less. And IMAX wont make much of a difference as The Avengers got an IMAX retrofit.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (7/5/2012 9:28:06 AM)

They are both going to make a billion plus at the box office - beyond that it will only be the fanboys counting.

My main point though is this; if we take the guide above (2 or 3 time production budget = break even) then why on earth are Disney green lighting a $250 million budget for something like John Carter with no A-list talent, a relatively obscure character and a director who's never directed live action before? The film may be the greatest thing ever made but doesn't it seem somewhat optimistic to expect something like John Carter to make between $500 - $750 million?

Avatar is your answer.

Talking of how JC got made due to Avatar, looking at Prometheus (which Avatar also helped to get made no doubt) - the new trailers evoke At The Mountains of Madness (in addition to AvP!). so hopefully if it makes decent BO (like 400-500m ww), then maybe Universal or whoever will greenlight ATMOM again for a 2014 release

be even better if Prometheus is rated R and makes all that as then MOM would get the R rating GDT wanted

looks like GDT thinks Prometheus has killed off any chance of ATMOM
http://screenrant.com/prometheus-rating-guillermo-del-toro-mountains-madness-sandy-169828/

id have thought if an R rated Prometheus could actually help ATMOM being green lit...but then the John Carter comparison is pretty apt
Sadly, if there’s any one lesson studio heads have probably taken away from this year’s John Carter fiasco, it’s that the moviegoing masses are less inclined to see “the original,” after already having seen the imitator(s).

Hood_Man -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (7/5/2012 10:14:22 PM)

Wow, the estimate appears to have been off by $7 million.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avengers11.htm

$207,438,708

[EDIT]

That's an increase of almost $40 million ($38,249,281) over Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Bloody hell, i dont see TDKR coming anywhere near that!

Of course noone predicted TDK would be quite as big before that was released so you never know...

jackcarter -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (7/5/2012 11:15:19 PM)

TDKR will probably do $300m opening

Okay which films on that list that has in your opinon box office wise surprised, disappointed, or really impressed with?

Hood_Man -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (7/5/2012 11:44:05 PM)

I got bored...

Here's the complete list (I think!) of Opening Weekend records for US Openings:
[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/ash_lee392/OpeningWeekends19812912.png[/image]
I've worked out the percentage increases over the previous holder (Red), and the increase in pure $$ (Blue), in descending year order (latest to oldest).

Here is the list re-ordered in preference of the % increase (descending order).
[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/ash_lee392/Increase.png[/image]
(As a Star Wars fan I like this order [:D])

Here is the list re-ordered in preference of the $$ increase (descending order).
[image]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v197/ash_lee392/Increase-1.png[/image]

p.s. Ghostbusters held its record for one week, narrowly breaking Crusade's record over the weekend of 16-18 June 1989, before getting destroyed by Batman the following weekend (23-25 June).

Spaldron -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (8/5/2012 1:17:53 AM)

Nice charts there Hoody.

TDKR will probably do $300m opening

No chance, it'd take literally a quarter of the western worlds population to achieve those sorts of figures. If it does beat Avengers it wont do it by much, maybe another £10-20m at most.

EDIT: That is if we're talking strictly US figures here as Avengers was released in Europe a week earlier so international gross doesn't count. TDKR will be released in the US and UK on the same day but will have a much more gradual release in many other western territories so it would be difficult to pinpoint an international weekend release figure.

Rob -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (8/5/2012 10:00:06 AM)

As much as I'd love TDKR to reclaim the highest opening weekend ever I suspect it's got absolutely no chance. No 3D price and a much much darker film by all accounts means that I think it will make about $170 million opening weekend at best. It goes without saying that ultimately it's irrelevant and we all want a good film but still it would be nice.

Fair play to Marvel. The advertising campaign was spot on and they eradicated the one problem I thought it would have in that the "Head count" trailer for example quickly told you who the main players were without needing to see the individual films. Couple that with the fact that the film is absolutely great then the success is fully deserved.
