dont think the title helped either. i know HW thinks having 'Mars' in the title is BO poison but they probably wouldve been better off calling it 'John Carter of Mars' or even the books title - 'A Princess of Mars'

not saying it wouldve had a $100m opening but it just seemed like such a cop out taking Mars from the title

If you were the studio head would you have gone for it at that price? I know they did but it still baffles me.

I can see why they went for it, and the film is actully not bad. Not amazing or anything - but a solid fantasy adventure film. The reason it has not done as well I think has to come down to marketing and just general interest in that type of film. You saw Prince of Persia and Cowboys and Aliens last year not do that well - John Carter is the natural extension of those two films.

I got a bit of a prince of persia and avatar vibe from it, but I actually enjoyed it more than both those films. Maybe the marketing wouldnt have made it into a huge hit but I think they shot themselves in the foot with how bad it has actually been. I would imagine Joe Public would be quite confused over what this film is about especially just from the title.

But why is Mars box office poison? It doesnt make sense to me, I think it may have been those movies didnt take off for one reason or another, not just because Mars was in the title.

Taking Mars from the title just added to the confusion around the marketing, I thought John Carter of Mars was a pretty cool title.

Darth Marenghi -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 5:39:23 PM)

John Carter has had the worst marketing campaign of all time so from our vantage point I don't think it's possible to judge how well it might have done. The media narrative of "this was always going to be a flop" has taken over the mindset.

MartinBlank76 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 5:44:32 PM)

Yeah, they have screwed it up from the start. I had a film fans point of view on it, so I always knew what it was about and that I wanted to see it, despite disneys best attempts to put me off, but Joe Public must have been bewildered about what it was or ignorant of its actual existence.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 5:45:27 PM)

To be honest I have yet to hear a good word about it from a non film fan.

MartinBlank76 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 5:50:52 PM)

I dont think any of them have went to see it. Thats the problem!

My main point though is this; if we take the guide above (2 or 3 time production budget = break even) then why on earth are Disney green lighting a $250 million budget for something like John Carter with no A-list talent, a relatively obscure character and a director who's never directed live action before? The film may be the greatest thing ever made but doesn't it seem somewhat optimistic to expect something like John Carter to make between $500 - $750 million?

Avatar is your answer.

Talking of how JC got made due to Avatar, looking at Prometheus (which Avatar also helped to get made no doubt) - the new trailers evoke At The Mountains of Madness (in addition to AvP!). so hopefully if it makes decent BO (like 400-500m ww), then maybe Universal or whoever will greenlight ATMOM again for a 2014 release

be even better if Prometheus is rated R and makes all that as then MOM would get the R rating GDT wanted

I'd love it if Prometheus' R-rated cut was the one released, but I'd be astonished if that happened at this point.

jackcarter -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 8:05:37 PM)

maybe US will get the PG13 (12A) cut and the UK will get the R (18) cut [:)]

(some seem to think that due to the new trailers having black goo visible in the US one and blood in the UK International trailer)

Rgirvan44 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 8:16:36 PM)

One of the writers of Prometheus tweeted a day ago that he would be surpirsed if Prometheus wasn't rated R.

I suspect Fox, who have been playing a blinder of a marketing campagin, are teasing the PG13 question in order to get more excitment once an R rating is given.

I will likely be wrong here...but would be nice if I wasn't.

MonsterCat -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 8:21:13 PM)

To me it doesn't matter if Prometheus is a 12A or an 18, but it would nice to see an adult sci-fi film for once.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 8:22:59 PM)

Yeah I am not so bothered both the PG13 AVP and the hard R AVP2 sucked donkey balls. It is whether the film is good or not which is important.

like with Expendables 2

even if Fox go with the PG13 cut it will probably still get 15 here (as happened with AvP, DH4, Apollo 18 etc) so itd at least 'feel' as though it was R rated here as normally R rated films mean 15 or 18 in uk

that said id still very much prefer to see the full on R rated cut (strong 15 or 18) at the cinema. that feeling of trepidation going into to see it knowing its 18 and seeing the big red BBFC certificate just before the film starts

Rgirvan44 -> RE: 2012 Box Office Estimates (20/3/2012 8:28:32 PM)

I seem to recall that Scott reduced the budget in order to allow the film to be an R.

Like the G-rated 2001: A Space Odyssey?

Hardly comparable, sir.

Completely agree, but the proposed 12A for Prometheus will always smack of unnecessary creative compromise. As far as I can tell, SRS and his team are aiming for a film that naturally fits into R-rated territory. So that's what they should release.

It was irrelevant I think. Clearly nobody gives a shit about Mars. [:D]

we must be quite close to finding out what the rating will be now..

various statements from R Scott indicate it should have an R rating, and from the new trailers it definitely looks like an R rated horror film...but then youd have expected AvP to be R yet they got it down to PG13

i guess if its R they will announce it sooner rather than later with abit of fanfare, and if its to be PG13 they'll try to keep it under wraps for as long as possible - maybe even a couple of weeks before release when some leaked promo thingy has [pg-13] in tiny print, like what happened with T4

unless, as Rgirvan44 states, maybe theyve been intending it to be R all along but keeping everyone who cares guessing in order to build hype

as you say there it'll certainly look better for Fox if they have it R in regard to supporting a directors vision etc, and would look pretty damning if they have it PG13 (i.e. Fox only care about $s and not the directors vision)

id completely understand the desire for PG13 and wanting the movie to be seen by the widest possible audience in order to ensure success but its not as if there hasnt been any R rated blockbusters! (which kids can see anyway in US so long as with an adult) it just takes the guts to go with whatever is best for the movie and not be swayed by wanting to attract the Transformers/Potter/Twilight teens (who probably wont go and see it even if it is PG13/12A anyway). and If it hits big maybe we'll even see something of a return to the era of the more adult big budget movies - so stuff like Mountains of Madness can get made instead of constantly pouring 200m's into superhero/boardgame/toy movies

I am happy for the Rock - he is finally getting into the big league now. Fast Five, Journey and hopefully GI Joe 2.

boxoffice.com predicting $125 million for The Hunger Games. boxofficemojo predicting $135 million.

A week ago it was tracking at $90-$100million.

It will be a well deserved win for The Hunger Games. It is a really good film.

Holy fuck. That's huge! *

Am really intrigued by Hunger Games, and it seems to be emerging from the shadow it previously may have had with people as being some kind of 'Twilight Sci Fi'. Still, even TDKR, Avengers and Spidey will be lucky to reach those kinds of figures. Also, just seen that they're showing it in IMAX in Cineworld Sheffield - as I havent followed the movies progress I'll ask the question - was it filmed in IMAX or is just being blown up to look huge?

*Cue Sid James laugh...
