Chief Wiggum -> Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 - Voting Starts NOW! (16/6/2011 5:26:11 PM)

OK so if you haven't read the other post I have decided to revive the Off Topic Photo Challenge that was started by James Numbers a few years ago.

Rules can be found here...Rules Thread

This months theme is....

"I Spy, With My Little Eye, Something beginning with..... A

If you choose to enter, you have 14 days to post a picture that you have taken of an something that starts with the letter A.

after 14 days are up (30th June**) the voting begins.

person with the most votes wins the round and gets to pick the new theme.

I've decided that in order to keep people playing a points system will be used, and each round gets 10 bonus points. this round the bonus points will go to the person who takes a picture of something the nearest to the beginning of the dictionary*.

*OK Smartarses, I realise that this could be claimed by somebody taking a picture of the letter "A", but that's a Letter, which begins with a "L" so none of that tomfoolery, thank you very much.

**I have also noticed that in an effort to get this going ASAP I have managed to coincide the end of the posting bit with the day that our dog is due to squeeze out some puppies, so there may be some extra time in this bit.

Her Anterior Sacroiliac Lligament?

Do we post pictures in this thread and comment on them in this thread as well?

Wymondham Abbey.

I'm presuming it is just a picture and title, so no waffle to sway the voter.

Hobbitonlass -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (17/6/2011 12:10:20 PM)

I think the last time James organised it we had to email photos to James and then he posted them in a thread so they were anon.  Are we going down the route of posting them ourselves (a la Sanchia) or the anon route (I don't mind which way we go) [:)]

sanchia -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (17/6/2011 12:28:19 PM)

I did query that one one the suggested rules but as there was nothing added about that. I do tend to think it is a good idea to anonymise the photos.

What an ugly little abbey! Looks like it was pre-dating brutalism by some way...!

nah, just post them, the way i see it is whilst it would minimise clique voting, the clique could still PM each other with a vote for #3 request type thing, that and everybody sending pic's is going to flood my inbox and then be a lot of work transposing them onto the thread.

guess which one was my main motivation[:D]

sanchia -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (17/6/2011 1:13:20 PM)

Hopefully my little snapshot gets things rolling. Do you know how few things there are out there starting with A! [:-]

Chief Wiggum -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (17/6/2011 1:19:40 PM)

not until after I'd posted the thread and wondered what my entry was going to be.

rick_7 -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (17/6/2011 1:23:20 PM)

A is for Apple.

That's all I've got so far.

swordsandsandals -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (17/6/2011 3:02:49 PM)

C is for Cookie

sanchia -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (17/6/2011 7:21:41 PM)

I have a picture of an Aardvark but it is blurry.

At the moment it looks like I might win being the only photo so far [;)]

Larry of Arabia -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (17/6/2011 7:26:07 PM)

It might be worth copying and pasting the entries into the first post so you don't have to scroll through a heap of posts to get to each photo.

Yes, yes it is....it's also for aerosol, aeroplane, alcohol, acetone, acrylic, anemone, and Axe!

I had planned to take a pic of a red Aerosol can against a blue sky, but the weather forecast put that idea to bed.

also great idea by Larry, will definitely be doing that. I had hoped it would stick to picture entries and the chat in the other thread, but as with all great plans, it went out the window the moment I came up with it.

jonson -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (18/6/2011 9:14:35 AM)

Rooting through my phone pictures, I took this a few months ago, with my Camera+ app on my Iphone.
Its a double A treat, being my Aubergine Aga no less.
Extra points for me I thinks. [:D]

Excuse the fading and silly border, I ws just messing about, sadly you can't go back to the original picture once you've saved it.
Or perhaps you can and I'm just useless.

Chief Wiggum -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (18/6/2011 11:14:14 AM)

I think the effects are hard coded onto the picture, so I doubt that you could remove them. but you've raised a tricky point - do we allow in-app effects on smartphone pictures?

I reckon as they are added at the time of the photo and not part of post-processing in photoshop, we should allow them - it may give smartphone users a bit of an edge, but then again DSLR users have an edge with the quality of their lenses (and the fact that their lenses don't get covered in pocket fluff on a daily basis).

also I've added the pic to the opening post.

swordsandsandals -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (20/6/2011 12:15:41 PM)

I know you are trying to get one through a month, but is 14 days a little short?

Angler.

Taken last Saturday on the Cam.

gingerdaniel -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (20/6/2011 3:46:22 PM)

How many entries can we submit for one 'round'?

Taken at the Banksy vs Bristol Museum last summer.

Chief Wiggum -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (20/6/2011 5:57:56 PM)

One Round, One Picture.

sorry to be a bit harsh, but there are other threads available where you can show off good photos you have taken.

edit - 2 reasons, even with the "sorry to be a bit harsh" it comes across a bit rude, sorry.

second Swords&Sandals

I do ideally want to get through 1 round a month, (with allowances for the winner to choose a new theme, we may still over run) the only thing I can think of is to reduce the voting time, but then we get less turnout.

Realistically 14 days should be enough for an entry to be made, two weekends in which to take a photo, it takes two minutes to upload it to your popular picture hosting site of choice and hotlink it across.

I reckon we should allow any sort of in camera effect. We can let smart phone users use certain effects, but also people with SLR's can use camera filters etc as well.

When the weather improves I intend to start using my new polarising filter any way [:D]

Speaking of which... if I took a picture of the rain outside could I submit that as Awful Weather? [;)]

People should allow any effect they want. But if it's noticeable I won't be voting for it. [;)]

Chief Wiggum -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (20/6/2011 6:55:49 PM)

absolutely if you do it whilst taking the photo it's okay, if you do it in Photoshop then its cheating.

(which handily for me means that I can get away with HDR[:D])

and yes Awful Weather would definitely count

Chief Wiggum -> RE: Off Topic Photo Competition - Round 1 (24/6/2011 5:14:25 PM)

quick reminder to those who have yet to enter
