You could probably blame the marketing as this was billed as both a 'Robin Hood' film and 'The Story Behind The Legend', therefore people expecting Merry Men, evil sheriffs and such were inevitably disappointed. However as 'Robin Hood Begins', I thought it was great, working as a genesis movie that lead into the "robbing from the rich" story we all know so well and have seen numerous times. I always thought the negative reaction was akin to the Casino Royale backlash, with many people resisting the new direction of an established 'icon'. So many people wanted the 'familiar' story they were familiar with and this new take was just too different. As Robin Hood is more legend than fact, you can just take the character and do whatever the hell you want with him. Setting him as a key player in the political fallout of Magna Carta was a genius plot device. THe Director's Cut is (personally) a much better film, with the 'Lost Boys of Sherwood' subplot padded out a bit so it actually makes sense when they show up at the end. If you haven't seen it, I'd give it a look but if you found the theatrical release too long.... then don't. Oh and I really don't understand the Crowe/accent complaints. It sounded fine to my Southern ears.
