I won't post the pictues, but seeing images of the frozen bodies of those who failed to climb Everest, but are so high up that they can't be recovered.

It is a mix of amazement at how climbers have to walk by them on the way up, how well perserved many of the bodies are, and upon further reading, how for many of them, it is was a fitting place to end up, doing what they loved the most.

Rgirvan do you know what you've done? Last night I was mindlessly browsing the forum passing time before bed and I came across this post and thought, 'interesting, wonder if he saw them on one website or scattered about?'  So off I went on a venture into google and half an hour later I'm sitting avidly lapping up every detail there is about Everest, its death zone, the fact that bodies are now used as landmarks on the way up etc and read about Jon Krakauer's book 'Into Thin Air' which discusses the mass death incident following an expedition of a large group back in May 96/97 (can't recall).  This in turn makes me have a look on our system at work today to see if we have it in as I'm pretty keen on reading it now, and was looking forward to starting it this evening.  However our system showed 1 in stock, and could I find it?  Nut.  So now I sit here disappointed at the fact I'm not reading a particular book that I hadn't even been aware of until last night.  And this is all your fault.  So, erm, I demand compensation.  I'm not fussy though, a donut will suffice.

I have actully ordered that book myself yesterday - this all started because I was catching up on the Malloy and Irvine climb - they found one of their bodies, pretty amazingly perserved, along with their clothing, a few years back. Nearly 80 years up on that mountain.

And if you are ever back in Glasgow, let me know, and I will send a donut onto you!

The Hubble Deep-Field:

[image]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rjeqbrYONv0/TTueHEeM40I/AAAAAAAAAuA/YslVOxwc2ck/s400/hubble+deep+field.jpg[/image]

Added wow when you try and grasp the scale of this fucking image. They're all individual galaxies, all millions of light years in diameter, millions of light years apart, all containing millions, if not billions, of their own stars. And this is just a tiny portion of the observable universe. Head-fuck time.

The 'Tsar Bomba':

[image]http://www.funstrangeamazing.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/tsar-bomba-largest-nuclear-bomb-explosion.png[/image]

The biggest man-made nuclear explosion ever. A hydrogen bomb with approximately 1000 times more explosive power and yield than both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs combined. Fireball was nearly three miles wide; cloud was nearly 30 miles high; blast radious of nearly 35 miles with a total fatal damage radious of nearly sixty miles, i.e - if you were sixty miles away from this mother-fucker you'd still get third-degree burns. Chilling.

Yet still only a quarter of the explosive yield that occured with the Krakatoa volcano. Whoa.

I'm a little confused. When you say "everything in existence" surely there are more than 43,000 galaxies in the known universe? More like 43,000,000,000?

vader100 -> RE: Images that Make You Go WOW! (29/5/2011 10:06:25 AM)

DancingClown -> RE: Images that Make You Go WOW! (29/5/2011 10:21:19 AM)

So could that image instead be a map of the Virgo Supercluster, of which our galaxy is a tiny part, as opposed to the entire universe? Still an impressive image, but where's the ex-keyboard player from D:ream when you need him?

In an article on Laughing Squid it says it's a 3D map of the local Universe - within 380 million light years.

http://laughingsquid.com/

Mindboggling though,it's just a small fraction of what's out there.

A friend had this as a link on facebook http://www.quora.com/Whats-the-most-epic-photo-ever-taken

Most of the stuff in there are now iconic photos we'll all have seen and are familiar with, but there are lot in there I'd never seen and certainly grabbed my attention.  I still can't quite believe the picture of the camels - what you think are the camels is actually their shadows, the beasts themselves being almost imperceptible white dots.

sanchia -> RE: Images that Make You Go WOW! (16/6/2011 12:59:03 PM)

this also is [:(] worthy about that picture.

quote:

The photographer, Kevin Carter, chased the bird away and then sat sobbing uncontrollably after taking the photo. In April of 1994, Carter was informed he'd be winning the Pulitzer Prize for the photo, and he was presented with the prize on May 23rd of that year. Two months later, he killed himself out of grief and desperation over all of the things he'd seen and his depression at the things humanity does to one another.

I do like this picture from there.

[Or I would if the link worked, the sixth one down with the beach, fireworks and lightning.

part of the exhibit is a 1 hr hour film, search Ashes and Snow on youtube and you'll find some snippets

what i love about it mostly is that the majority of animals used throughout were wild and not trained to sit in any certain position
