One thing in the timeline kind of sheds light on an issue I always had in Aliens.

Why were none of the marries at all taken aback when told a xenomorph or bug may be involved? They even coined the phrase ‘Bug Hunt’ While it’s obvious from Aliens these had never been encountered before, they still all seemed to know of the possibility of them.

But the timeline confirms that Weyland was actually responsible for the creation of United States Colonial Marine Corps prior to Prometheus. So, perhaps all enlisted personnel were briefed regarding these things. Maybe not all info was divulged but the very basics. Some of what they gathered in Alien and Prometheus perhaps. Then enlisted personnel have to sign something akin to the Official Secrets Act.

Could the mercenary types we see in Prometheus actually be members of the early USCMC?

I get the impression that humans are just in fairly regular contact with aliens (not Aliens) at this point, such as the comment about them sleeping with some race (can't remember the name given) and it didn't matter if they were male or female when they're [insert alien name]

That line always throws me in Aliens... is it 'Octurian' or something?? Initially, I always thought it must be some wird alien race they sleep with, but then that kinda makes the universe feel more Star Trek than I'd like, in that it appears humans regularly interact with alien races. However, someone once mentioned, and it may have been here on Empire, that the 'Octurian' or whatever, could just refer to an outworld colony of humans (on the Octurian colony or planet??) that are somehow known for being a bit freaky in the bedroom and so space grunts shack up with the male and female - maybe like Bangok Chicks with Dicks! Either way, it's a really odd little thing in Aliens that always really puzzles me whenever I hear it.

I was definitely always of the opinion that it was a colony. Potentially, synthetics even. But I never assumed they were aliens they were talking about. Kind of detracts from the Alien universe to think of other species running about. I like the idea that it’s just humans. Adds so much more weight to any encounter that does occur... no matter how badly it turns out [:D]

warren7355 -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 11:25:30 AM)

I'd always taken 'Bug Hunt' to mean any mission that involved dealing with dangerous indigenous fauna, not necessarily Aliens.

But when asked what a Xenomorph is, Hicks replies ‘that’s a bug hunt’. And seeing as Xenomorph is now what we all refer to them as, I assume they knew it was something like what they found.

porntrooper -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 11:44:18 AM)

On the whole 'bug hunt' issue, I'd always taken it to mean they've been on supposed 'bug-hunts' before, i.e. missiones where people had stated they had encountered aliens but nothing had ever come of it, which is why they kinda treat it ridiculously. The way Hudson asks if it's a stand up fight or another bug hunt, sounds as if he's saying 'are we gunna get any action or just chase ghosts?'. Hicks replay of 'it's a bug hunt' is said in such a way to indicate 'we've done this before and nothign came of it'. I always took it like if we were to send todays armed forces looking for Big Foot or whatever based on the hearsay of 'eye witnesses' they would basically chase nothing and get no action. WHich is why Ripley kinda gets the cold shoulder, they've encountered people like her before claiming to have had alien encounters and they've been sent chasing fuck all round the universe and they see it as pointless.

Back to Prometheus, the Weyland timeline also mentions the 'Outer Veil', isnt that where the Nostromo is returning from in Alien?

Rgirvan44 -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 11:46:36 AM)

They returned from the Outer Rim.

As for Bug Hunt - it is just slang for a low risk mission, and a little nod to Starship Troopers.

Rob -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 11:51:34 AM)

I think Noomi Rapace is a beautiful woman but she kind of looks like the Joker in some of the shots from the trailer. Particularly the part where she says "it's an invitation".

Not particularly insightful but thought I'd share that anyway!

Karl Crutchley -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 11:55:02 AM)

Found an article following the Fassbender, Scott & Lindelof panel at Wondercon 2012

http://spinoff.comicbookresources.com/2012/03/20/wondercon-scott-lindelof-and-fassbender-discuss-prometheus/

Does this put to bed the idea that Prometheus will end with the "ship" as the derelict?
Or more red herrings from the filmakers?

No doubt. In that shot she looks like a big bowl of crazy! [:D]

Sort of wish I hadn't clicked on that (curiosity gets the better of me...[:D]), but from the original teaser trailer, I'd suspected that was him.

Yea, it was a pretty obvious connection that I think most made on first viewing and was mentioned earlier in the thread, but I assume we will see more mutated crew and not just Sean Harris, so it shouldn't be too big a spoiler in the long run.

OPEN YOUR EYES -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 1:47:55 PM)

That Gif is spooky/creepy though[:D]
Alien/xenomorph origins?

Cabal aka Boone -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 6:51:32 PM)

From the two trailers this week, (and without trawling through 30 pages of forum to look) I'm starting to think the planet they drop on 'invited' ends up being LV426.
Or, from the 'cave paintings' and drawings that make up the 'Invite', LV426 could be in the same area of space as this planet.

That crashing 'Derelict' ship in the trailer MUST be the same derelict we know and love, musn't it? Would make a whole lotta sense in my book.

Still doesn't explain where the 'Alien' comes from, which hasn't really been touched on in anything I've seen or read.
Those eggs in 1979 dont appear to resemble the 'eggs' in this chapter.

Anyway, my two h'apeth. For now.

TheGodfather -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 8:09:55 PM)

TV spot #2

OPEN YOUR EYES -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 8:30:42 PM)

hmm, easily the worst of the trailers.
Didnt feel like it had originality in it,and the voice over just does not work.

Theron: "If your going down there, your going to die".Didnt like that line, sounded cheap and rather straight to the point.

TheGodfather -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 8:43:52 PM)

Well, it`s a tv spot anyway. they normally have those voices in it...

Yeah, but I really think it could have done without the voice over.
I liked the flashing-text sequences of the past trailers.

But im really not digging that theron quote.[:@]

TheGodfather -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (23/3/2012 9:20:07 PM)

So true, they could`ve really done without the voice -over. Generally don`t like that either...

I think you are partly right because Bishop II and his marines were fully prepared. You could even say they must be following the original Marines and using them as canon fodder.

Private Hudson -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (24/3/2012 1:06:22 AM)

I think 'Bug Hunt' just means an action the Marines are involved in when thy hunt down an alien life form (not the Xenomorph) but one which has limited intelligence and it does indeed pass a nod to Starship Troopers and the Klendathu. The Klendathu were insect-like creatures who were referred to as Bugs.

So I think the marines have fought many types of 'bugs' over the years, but it seems they have never really had a problem with defeating them.

Weyland cures cancer?

Doesn't Amanda Ripley McLaren die of that in Aliens while Ripley is sleeping for 57 years?

Only a minor gripe.

I am worried about the whole derelict as I loved that idea that it had been there for centuries.

And as I said I liked the idea that the Alien is a bit random in that there are lots of nasty things lurking out there in space, which of course was summed up by he legendary tagline.

Cures "most" cancers. And it doesn't say they just give away a cure. Who knows, Amanda could have not been able to afford treatments. You don't become a super evil corporation by being nice to the little people.

I think you are wrong in this aspect as I am pretty sure Carter Burke mentions something like "Can't still lick the Big C eh?" in the Special Edition to a distressed Ripley.

BTW where are you guys finding all of the info on Weyland? I clicked on a previous link and it only has a few dates on it, no mention of the stuff you have all been talking about.

The film looks superb.

Dirk Miggler -> RE: New Prometheus Teaser (24/3/2012 7:26:28 AM)

Checked out all the viral stuff yesterday. Pretty fckin sweet !!

So far the marketing has been flawless. I Really hope the film can deliver the goods.

I always took "bug hunt" at face value, they are hadcore marines who spend 70% of their time squatting flies, hence the disappointed reaction.

The events that follow clearly show they underestimated the "bugs" so I don't see them having any prior knowledge other than what Ripley tells them.

pete_traynor -> Spoiler Shot In Trailer (24/3/2012 7:52:57 AM)

Potential Spoiler!!!

A lot of people seem upset that they show the Prometheus crashing into the Derelict in the trailer. But there seems to be a lot of speculation out there that this may actually be a 2 ship expedition. There may be another ship called the Magellan involved. Could be a drop ship or escape craft? But this could be where all the mutated crew stuff happens when the survivors leave the SJ planet?

You know I never really saw it as the massive spoiler that people were getting their knickers in a twist about, we saw the ship crashing in the very first trailer, what do people think brought it down ? Bad driving ??

pete_traynor -> RE: Spoiler Shot In Trailer (24/3/2012 8:44:56 AM)

Yeah it's not bothered me to know. In the teaser mind I thought it may have been missiles or something that took it out

Drew_231 -> RE: Spoiler Shot In Trailer (24/3/2012 4:20:18 PM)

Just a quick point before I leave this thread for good (because you all seem intent on spoiling the entire film for yourselves!)

Did the assumption that the Space Jockeys are going back to earth to wreak vengeance come from this trailer?
Because that scene where she says 'Where are they going', and David replies 'Earth' struck me as being quite similar to that bit in the trailer of Star Trek Nemesis (bear with me)

Whatshisname in the STN trailer clearly goes 'Set a course for Earth...Kill everything!', but as everyone who saw the movie knows, that was two entirely separate conversations put together for the sake of an exciting trailer.
So I just think we shouldn’t all jump to conclusions based on snippets of dialogue from a trailer.
