Hating a character in a movie i believe is the mark of an excellent performance. I dont mean hating a lame character, i mean which villains or characters are so despicable and loathsome that you hate them completely. My vote goes for Mrs Carmody from The Mist. Marcia Gay harden is sooooooo good in this role and in maing the audience hate her character more than anything!

Any other takers?

I'll second Mrs. Carmody, an excellent performance and I wanted her to die [:D]

I pick Biff Tannen as a dude you love to hate. He starts of as an attempted rapist in the first film but then takes such a dark turn in BTTF Part 2. Thomas F. Wilson plays him brilliantly and clearly has fun with the darker side of Biff (and his ancestor) in the sequels.

(I can probably think of someone else that suits it better but BTTF is my go to answer for everything)

I'll throw a couple of others into the mix for you:

Mr. Harvey from The Lovely Bones. An brilliant performance from Stanley Tucci makes this guy a complete blank and utterly horrific all in one.

Burke from Aliens. Just a horrible, spineless man right from the fist time he appears on screen.

The captain in Pan's Labyrinth.

And an honourable mention for William Atherton for the characters he plays in Ghostbusters and Die Hard. [:D]

I'd have to agree with my good mate DK - Mrs. Carmody from THE MIST was one sick b***h! But keeping with the Darabont-connection - Doug Hutchison as 'Percy Wetmore' in THE GREEN MILE...

Sean Penn as Meserve in Casualties of War was a loathsome bastard....

A third vote for Captain Vidal from Pan's Labyrinth

I would also like to nominate:

Cesar from A Prophet - You can really imagine how hellish being locked up with him for a span of years would be.

The Doctor, The Baron and The Pastor from The White Ribbon - Standout miserable gits from a community full of emotionally repressed sadists. Small wonder their kids turn out so messed up.

If the question also included television, I would add the demonic George Hearst from seasons 2-3 of Deadwood.

Plotted against the King, attempted to kill off his rivals, bullied the Queen to become king, behind attacks on Muslims and his antics cost thousands of lifes.

Fanny Dashwood - I truly, truly hate this woman, this character sums up everything about the class war, at no stage in the book of film does she soften. No talk-down, no humble pie NOTHING!!

Star - the most pointless damsel/love interest there has ever been in a film....EVER!

Lt Stansfield - In two hours I went from casually loving Gary Oldman to loathing him then hugely respecting him as an actor. The guy consumes emotion, it took me ages to see beyond Stansfield. Gary was genius, a sexy genius in this but we all know Standsfield is an uber bastard!!

Don Logan from Sexy Beast. Sir Ben Kingsley was just so good.

Randy Quaids character in a movie called Next Door opposite James Woods. Starts off as a tit for tat comedy but becomes so dark that i was cheering when Quaid got his comeuppence. He poisoned Woods dog so he set him on fire!!

Just watched it again today, yep ellis is a real love to hate kinda dude. Especially the cheesy grin he gives as he sits back in the chair and says to Hans, '...and I can give him to you'. Cue cheesy grin...

I would agree with Wiliam Atherton in Die Hard but not Ghostbusters cause he was too damn entertaining to hate. The way he says "May I please see the storage facility?" is so sleazy but so well played.

My Personal Favourites, if that is the correct word are: -

Benny Blanco - Carlito's Way.
Eli Sunday - There will be Blood.

Faces you just wanna slap hard, no redeeming qualities. One is a Chain-snatchin', jive-ass, maricón motherfucker while the other is just the afterbirth.

Now you mention it, virtually the entire cast of Starship Troopers (especially mini-Busey and Denise Richards' co-pilot) are intensely hateable. Happily, one of them gets his brains sucked out. Yes, that's right, THEY SUCKED HIS BRAINS OUT...

She was the first person who came to mind when I saw the thread title! God I HATED her! Good call!
