Totally forgot that album. Would probably go for The Intense Humming Of Evil. Mind, although it's nowhere near as great an album, Small Black Flowers... and Removables from Everything Must Go bring the pain pretty well.

Katy Song is a great yardstick for misery - if you can sit there and listen to the whole 'outro' (about 5 minutes of repetitive melancholy) without getting up and switching the bloody thing off, then you're pretty depressed [:D] It's a great song, but by gum does it ever go on at the end... Another, erm, good choice of bleak song would be Nick Drake's Know - considering the skill and lightness of touch with which he usually plays his guitar, the heavy-handed way he plays the only four notes in this song is a somewhat scary look into the state of his mind at the time. Black Eyed Dog is more musically adept, but the lyrics (about the manifestation of his own depression) and the way he uses his voice in this isn't so much bleak as utterly terrifying.

Should also add the whole of John Grant's Queen of Denmark album - he dredges up his broken heart, drug problems and disillusionment of his own career (after splitting up The Czars, he waited tables), with Midlake doing the music. There's a very black-humouredstreak running through it, but this is someone trying to make sense out of every bad thing that has ever happened to him, and it's all there in the lyrics. It's a brilliant album, but harrowing with it.
