Pretty much everything on The Holy Bible, but 4st 7lbs is just horrifying.

horribleives -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (5/9/2010 1:30:03 PM)

Totally forgot that album. Would probably go for The Intense Humming Of Evil. Mind, although it's nowhere near as great an album, Small Black Flowers... and Removables from Everything Must Go bring the pain pretty well.

Larry of Arabia -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (5/9/2010 1:45:03 PM)

John Wayne Gacy Jr. by Sufjan Stevens was the first that came to mind.

Aye, that's pretty harrowing. The first 'oh my god' always sends a chill up my spine.

Oddly enough I only just heard Katy Song for the first time today. It's pretty good if a bit overlong.

Hurt by NIN is another good one.

James74 -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (5/9/2010 11:06:03 PM)

Strange Fruit by Billy Holiday. Powerful lyrics sung in such a haunting way.

boaby -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (9/9/2010 6:05:15 PM)

Estranged - GNR

just about everything Del Amitri ever wrote.

FritzlFan -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (9/9/2010 6:11:59 PM)

Bruce Springsteen - State Trooper
Nick Drake - Parasite

Good call, though I actually find it quite groove-tastic (well, I've danced to it a few times). Of the many (well, six) melancholy songs on that particular masterpiece I've always found Washer the saddest.

fuzzy -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (13/9/2010 1:01:35 PM)

How Do You Keep Love Alive - Ryan Adams

Toby Monroe -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (13/9/2010 1:26:31 PM)

Katy Song is a great yardstick for misery - if you can sit there and listen to the whole 'outro' (about 5 minutes of repetitive melancholy) without getting up and switching the bloody thing off, then you're pretty depressed [:D]
It's a great song, but by gum does it ever go on at the end...

Another, erm, good choice of bleak song would be Nick Drake's Know - considering the skill and lightness of touch with which he usually plays his guitar, the heavy-handed way he plays the only four notes in this song is a somewhat scary look into the state of his mind at the time.  Black Eyed Dog is more musically adept, but the lyrics (about the manifestation of his own depression) and the way he uses his voice in this isn't so much bleak as utterly terrifying.

norters the red -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (5/10/2010 9:55:39 PM)

Not posted in these forums for AGES! Anyhow, I would like to nominate Black Eyed Dog by Nick Drake. Its bleak as hell but I still sing along.

matthewforan -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (5/10/2010 10:25:36 PM)

Poke by Frightened Rabbit and probably the entire For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver

hiptobesquare_x -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (5/10/2010 10:50:28 PM)

Suicide Note - Johnette Napolitano

Very bleak, yet I enjoy singing along...

Squidward Hark Bugle -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (13/10/2010 11:46:47 PM)

Anything by Opeth, but in particular check out

To Bid You Farewell
Face Of Melinda
Hope Leaves
Isolation Years
To Rid The Disease
When

darko18 -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (1/11/2010 12:30:21 PM)

Brand New - Jesus Christ
Elliott Smith - Needle In The Hay
Team Sleep - Death By Plane

Although I could name dozens of NIN songs. Good call on Anniversary, btw, OP.

CrassMan -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (14/11/2010 8:35:33 PM)

Flirted With You My Whole Life - Vic Chessnutt

Agree with this completely - the whole album isn't the cheeriest (even less so when put in context of Vic's subsequent suicide), but this one really plumbs the depths of sadness [:(]

Jessica_ca_ca_ca -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (19/11/2010 2:48:11 PM)

Parasite - Nick Drake (already mentioned, I know!)
Cut - Plumb
I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You - Colin Hay
I Grieve - Peter Gabriel
Break So Easy - Johnathan Rice
Poison Cup - M. Ward
All That You Have Is Your Soul - Tracy Chapman

Recently downloaded this - good call [:)] Always liked Ryan Adams.

foz -> RE: Favourite bleak songs (29/11/2010 5:37:37 PM)

Should also add the whole of John Grant's Queen of Denmark album - he dredges up his broken heart, drug problems and disillusionment of his own career (after splitting up The Czars, he waited tables), with Midlake doing the music.  There's a very black-humouredstreak running through it, but this is someone trying to make sense out of every bad thing that has ever happened to him, and it's all there in the lyrics.
It's a brilliant album, but harrowing with it.
