Jeffrey -> Boardwalk Empire - US SPEED - Season 3 starts on page 6 (16/3/2010 4:34:18 PM)

"Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, a true-life figure whom writer/executive producer Terence Winter calls the town's "beloved treasurer. He was the guy who really ran everything."

The 12-episode season begins with Prohibition in 1920, which opens new avenues for the fictionalized Nucky Thompson.
"He went from being a corrupt politician who basically engaged in low-level election rigging, to the big leagues of alcohol," says Winter, who worked on The Sopranos. "The world changed completely."
The series includes real-life Mob characters Al Capone, "Lucky" Luciano and Arnold Rothstein, and up to 200 extras in period garb, with lots of tweed and flapper dresses.
Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt, Kelly Macdonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Dabney Coleman and Stephen Graham will star in the series.
Martin Scorsese directed the pilot and will serve as executive producer on the series.

Airs in Autumn 2010.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (16/3/2010 7:44:46 PM)

Sway and Elab kindly pointed out that I am blind and totally missed this thread. So sorry!

Anyways - as I was asking - has anyone read the book? Worth my time?

I would recommend it if you are into the gangster genre. You can read abit about it here:

mafyou -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (8/4/2010 3:46:55 PM)

I watched the new longer trailer for Boardwalk Empire that was premiered before The Pacific. It's shaping up to look like typically great HBO.

I'm guessing we won't see it on our shores before 2011 though, which is a shame. Who's most likely to show it over here? FX?

Qwerty Norris -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (8/4/2010 3:59:31 PM)

If that's as good as the trailer suggests we'll be in for a cracker - can't wait!!!

Jeffrey -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (7/8/2010 3:22:10 PM)

This gonna be on Sky shortly after the Yanks get it?

Professor Moriarty -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (11/9/2010 12:44:30 PM)

Thought I might give this a quick bump as its just a week away from starting.

HBO. Prohibition-era gangsters. Scorsese. Buscemi. Yes. Yes. Yes

They'll most likely schedule it on the premium movie channel, like they did with The Pacific.  I would expect the same treatment for Game of Thrones as well.

Your Funny Uncle -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (13/9/2010 7:58:59 AM)

I think I'll wait and watch this when it comes on Sky. Looking forward to it.

sharkboy -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (15/9/2010 3:02:00 PM)

Been following this on Facebook for a while now and I'm genuinely excited by it, especially since it marks the return of Omar - yes, The Wire's Michael K William's returns to the screens as Chalky White, a local gangster. [:D] No way am I waiting for Sky to fuck this up the way they did for The Pacific - this is coming straight from my US relatives [;)][:D]

Rebenectomy -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (15/9/2010 3:46:54 PM)

Can't believe this was about to pass me by. Gangsters? 1920s? Count me in.[:)]

Can't wait! Amazing cast, period crime drama and Scorcese at the helm. How can it go wrong?
Does anyone know if this will be a mini-series or a full fledged (season by season) TV show?

12 initial episodes. A second season is dependant on ratings, though probably a sure thing.
Unfortunately, there's a chance the show could be prematurely cancelled after a few seasons due to high costs. Allegedly the pilot may have cost $50 million.

To the interwebs on monday, y'all.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (18/9/2010 5:04:17 PM)

I think the 50 million price, included building the actual boardwalk, so costs should come down after that.

kata -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (18/9/2010 9:14:15 PM)

When does this air in America?
Will have to get it from the old Auntie over there [;)]

DaveNewman18 -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (20/9/2010 1:40:11 PM)

Just watched the pilot.

I like what I saw too. Visually stunning and stuffed with potential to be as good as HBO's elite shows. A little slow out the traps, and you might expect more from a pilot of a new series, but it does seem like they are laying the foundations for an incredible story. Nice to steve Steve Buscemi in the headline role also.

Ethanial -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (20/9/2010 4:40:43 PM)

Slow is a good word for it. But it doesn't negate the quality shown.

Great opener.

Jeffrey -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (20/9/2010 5:06:01 PM)

Excellent first episode, even Michael Pitt was good. Outstanding production values, though the CGI shoreline was a bit iffy.

Forgot to post these:

I loved the pilot. Just a really really fantastic start to this series.

Ethanial -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (20/9/2010 10:21:55 PM)

Oh, those art pieces are really really nifty.

Captain Black -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (20/9/2010 10:38:24 PM)

I really liked it too - it wasn't quite as dense as I was expecting in that it basically focuses on just the three characters for that episode whilst sprinkling everyone else in as background, and Kelly McDonald's plot thread is entirely predictable but well-executed (better for the impact it has on Buscemi's character, who's a terrific creation). They even used the X hours earlier mechanism really effectively, and that's one of my current least favourite techniqes in TV.

vad3r -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (20/9/2010 11:03:20 PM)

Brilliant pilot. Can't wait for the rest, I imagine it's only going to get better. The acting and scenery are of cinematic quality.

paul_ie86 -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (21/9/2010 8:49:34 PM)

Add me to the list of fans.

Deviation -> RE: Martin Scorsese presents 'Boardwalk Empire' (HBO) (21/9/2010 9:04:48 PM)

I think it might be the best thing I've seen from Marty since Kundun (I loved that film). Some great acting, well paced and incredibly well made.
