Predictable rating - Not sure how a "flawed" film can get five stars lol.......

That's ridiculous imo, and so is the part where they put Von Trier in the review with Emmerich and Bay.

But hey, maybe it is amazing.

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Hmm, five stars? (11/12/2009 12:50:42 AM)

Can't wait to see where this thread is by tomorrow night!

Also - isn't there something of a spoiler in that review about the planet itself?

Jasper_29 -> RE: Hmm, five stars? (11/12/2009 12:57:32 AM)

Could anyone explain how is Terminator 2 can be viewed as a love story?

Rhubarb -> RE: Hmm, five stars? (11/12/2009 1:11:44 AM)

I'm shocked no-one has said Attack of the Clones yet [:D]

Jasper_29 -> RE: Hmm, five stars? (11/12/2009 1:17:24 AM)

It sounds more like a Matrix Reloaded...

This year's Attack of the Clones anybody?

There, happy now? :p

We shall see in a few days time whether or not Titanic truly ruined one of the greatest action directors around.

Ethanial -> RE: Hmm, five stars? (11/12/2009 2:34:27 AM)

I raised Attack Of The Clones, swiftly shot down...
Hey, that's exactly like the feeling before and during Attack too!

directorscut -> RE: Avatar (11/12/2009 3:34:36 AM)

Remember Hewitt is the same guy who gave Attack of the Clones 5 stars!

Macphist0 -> RE: Avatar (11/12/2009 3:40:59 AM)

Well while not as crazy, the other reviews so far do back him up. So glad it's getting good early feedback. The King is back, and boy how we need when a jackass like Michael Bay is running around thinking he;s just as good.

demoncleaner -> RE: 1 Star for the review. (11/12/2009 6:43:28 AM)

Don't be cynical about Chris's review.

No one from Lisburn could be wrong, about anything.

MAYBE, MAYBE if they dug deep for an Adam Smith review (who doesn't review anything I know) but maybe I'd trust that.  I won't go in for the obvious dig about Chris' 5-star reviews.  I will say there's something deeply fucking shallow about a wee lisburn beardy person trying to sell magazines to America....   And then trying to come back here and sell us a film!  What does Kim Newman, Angie Errigo, Damon Wise, or Ian Freer think about it? What would the erstwhile Helen O'Hara as features editor think about it? [:D]

Get some stay-at-home talent with syllables to review, otherwise I am soooo gunning my December dollar t'ward Gary Oldman in Christmas Carol 3-fucking-d. [:D]  I'm so narrow-minded I'm loving it!  That's where my December 3-D sterling's goiung toward.

grucl -> RE: 5 stars? (11/12/2009 7:18:57 AM)

This thread has potential to rival last year's Indy IV insult-a-thon. I hope the mods have slept well, cause this will be one tough weekend!

Felix -> RE: 5 stars? (11/12/2009 7:38:46 AM)

Come on Empire!! how can you give this 5 stars?! I mean yeah ok, you've seen the film and we havent, but we've seen all the images and clips online and it definitely only looks like a 3 star film!!!!!11!!!!!

Get a grip people. And remember what the consequences are when accusing Empire of getting kickbacks in return for good reviews. That is a very serious accusation and unless proof is offered alongside it then posters will find their ability to post on this forum severely reduced for a period of time.

grucl -> RE: 5 stars? (11/12/2009 8:21:37 AM)

edit

crazymoviesdude -> RE: 5 stars? (11/12/2009 8:24:13 AM)

None of us have seen it.

If you think Chris is talking out of his 'contractually obliged' ass, some would say you are entitled to that, but the fact is, his opinion is based on the finished product. The most any of us have seen is 15 mins.

I do this everytime a review of a big film comes out, because it's as if people really are as stupid as they seem.

What's happened here, is that a review for a big movie has come out, and it praises the film. My thoughts of how the movie would be have been confirmed. All of your thoughts (I know there are some sensible people on here, we all acknowledge that we are the few) have not been confirmed, and this in itself, I'm sure, makes you angry, and therefore.......Chris must, must, must be wrong. It couldn't possibly mean that you've been harbouring an all consuming hate (maybe not ALL consuming, you've been a little bit preocuppied with hating other films you haven't seen for that) for a film you haven't seen, that has turned out to be quite good.

If all you haters see the film (actually see it, rather than waiting for the 17th to come around, not seeing it, saying you've seen it, and then bashing it), and still hate it, then you have a case (all be it a skewed 'hated-from-inception, which means I can't let my opinion change becuase then I'll be laughed at by the guys in Games Workshop' case).

I am ecstatic Empire have given it a good review, and it makes me even more excited about next thursday.

tftrman -> RE: Avatar (11/12/2009 8:46:40 AM)

Slightly bizarre review in that we've got a darts analogy in one paragraph and the inference that Lars Von Trier is an action director in another. Still, it's piqued my interest enough to want to see the film.

For the slow amongst you out there, I'm 99% certain he's joking about that. [8|]

shool -> RE: Avatar (11/12/2009 8:49:16 AM)

This has now heightened my interest in the film that and the favourable review in the guardian.

Roll on next week.

CORLEONE -> RE: Avatar (11/12/2009 8:50:30 AM)

As expected, 5 stars in 3D, 4 stars In 2D. Got me tickets booked for next Friday at Manchester IMAX. I know it'll be awesome. (Still worried about the script though....)

I'm sure it was meant as a joke, it just wasn't very funny.

demoncleaner -> RE: Avatar (11/12/2009 9:05:56 AM)

Can I just say, speaking as a cynic who hasn't seen the film.  No one asked for Jim Cameron's self-imposed exile.  Personally I could do the fuck without True Lies or the Abyss.  T2 is a giggle, at 15 it was my favourite film before I saw Pulp Ficition.  How we laughed at sci-fi.

I tell you what we didn't fucking laugh at................. A L I E N S.

M A S T E R P I E C E

Can we have more of that please...with sentry guns!

James Dyer -> RE: (11/12/2009 9:26:22 AM)

And the prize for the first person to mention Attack of the Clones goes to.... RHUBARB!

While the response in this thread was predictable (although far less vitriolic than I'd expected. Come on people, put some effort in), it always amuses me how so many of you can get so up in arms about ratings before you've actually seen the film. Dan actually got death threats when he did the unthinkable and only gave Pirates 2 a three star rating. Death threats! Over Pirates 2! All from people who wouldn't actually clap eyes on it for another three weeks!

By all means begin the usual mutterings about the fleet of Lambourghinis Cameron clearly bought the whole Empire office to secure his 5 star rating (mine was an LP640 in Na'vi blue) and continue to berate the review to your hearts' content. But having watched it last night I have to say that Chris' take is spot on - both the pro and con points. Despite any misgivings about the story (or the chanting), Avatar is an immersive cinema experience without peer. Hate the enviro-ranting and scoff at the CG blue people if you must, but frankly, if you can watch Avatar in 3D, let yourself be swallowed by the world and still not enjoy yourself then you should probably go pick up a book instead because you clearly don't like movies.

Sorry to interrupt the tirade. By all means do continue.

That's disgusting. Giving 3 stars to Pirates 3 however, does justify death.

I haven't seen this yet so therefore it is only 3 stars. Chris is wrong.

That's either one of the best things someone has said on this thread, or the stupidest.

I hope the former?

UTB -> RE: Um? (11/12/2009 9:53:51 AM)

Clearly it is teh bestest!!
