mark09laugh@gmx.com -> SOOOOO unDERRATED (12/10/2009 1:31:27 PM)

This rating that you(Empire) gave this film is virtually a criminal offence. superb 5 star film, like a futuristic version of the fugitive, only infinitely better. SUPERB. IT IS THE LAW that this film must be given a 5 star immediately.

spamandham -> RE: Judge Dredd (12/10/2009 3:53:02 PM)

Why do these old film reviews keep getting dredged up? Is it a review of dvd re release or summat? Or do people just like to resurrect old discussions... [8D]

On topic:

DD wasn't too awful, although the yanks typically, had the satirical nature of the source material completely fly over their heads.

65%

This again, I fucking hate reading comments like this regularly on here. So goddamned fed up.

A great big FUCK YOU from me to all the people who frequently call Americans stupid.

Bravo!

jobloffski -> RE: Judge Dredd (13/10/2009 2:35:59 PM)

Would imagine referring to all British people as 'Brummies' would be as stupid as referring to all Americans as 'Yanks'

And given the big 'cultural debate' over here right now, even in supposedly 'intelligent' newspapers involves Strictly Come Dancing and X-Factor I'd have to say there's a FUCKING HUGE question mark over our appetite for, let alone understanding of 'irony'.

Yes, mistakes were made with Judge Dredd. But if it were made more like the source material now (and perhaps the world can take it now we're in such an international kerfuffle over the rule of law/civil liberties/summary justice in law enforcment) in the post 'Dark Knight' era a better job would surely be made?.

That said, big mistake having him remove the helmet. Wouldn't have taken a lot of brains to exploit the star in the publicity and actually have the balls to say 'he doesn't take the helmet off, but that's okay, cos we all know what stallone looks like' would it?

Rgirvan44 -> RE: Judge Dredd (13/10/2009 2:41:19 PM)

Not to mention that film is actully pretty damn fun until they make him take off the helmet.

But there is a lot to love in there, and if they had Dredd actully re-arrest Schinder at the end, it would have at least taken out the sting of his role a little.

I was actually referring to the makers of said film, but well done for jumping to conclusions and getting your knickers in a twist.

I also didn't actually call anyone "stupid", but lets not reality in the way of your silly response.

Fair enough, but I guess it might have been cool for you to refer to 'yank filmmakers' cos it was not clear that you weren't referring to all Americans. Peace, etc

Snake-Eyes -> RE: Judge Dredd (14/10/2009 9:05:15 AM)

back to the subject matter - I personally think JUDGE DREDD was a big, fun summer movie, one of the best of 1995. I know it ain't exactly loyal to the comic but I was never a reader so I just enjoyed it for what it was.... PLUS, it's STALLONE! [:D]

Oh you meant the makers, well that's much better. But you wrote, 'the yanks typically..' to me that implies that you think American filmmakers having 'satirical' material completely flying over their heads is commonplace, generalizing.
Btw, just for the record, not all the people involved with the production of the film were American.

Nicola Brierley -> (18/3/2010 9:38:41 AM)

THE LAAWWW!!!

Nobody in this film can even say this word properly!

jordan thomas -> its a damn sight better than the late kick-ass (2/9/2010 8:43:45 PM)

yes it was and it was more entertaining too, cheesy comic style film making at its best if you ask me

bnicholson50 -> Unfairly Judged (7/2/2011 10:01:47 PM)

Not as bad as everyone makes out. It opens with a prologue narration by James Earl Jones who says "power" and "force" alot. The production design is quality. Action comes thick & fast with a side of cheesy one-liners. Stallone is a self richeous Bad-Ass with or without the helmet and Armand Assante is a brilliant villain. I could have done without Rob Schneider though. The remake will no doubt be a dark, gritty & brooding affair but it won't be as fun as this one. Courts Adjourned

jackcarter -> RE: (12/9/2012 12:35:07 PM)

no its I AM DEH LEAWL!

need to watch this again after seeing Dredd3D (seem to recall the opening in the tower block is sort of similar to the entire plot of the new one)

manwihtheplan -> RE: RE: (12/9/2012 1:27:19 PM)

Judge Dredd is released on Blu-ray on September 18th (US release).

The 1995 film does have one advantage over the new film - the title!

Dredd 3D sounds a bit naff. [:D]

Quoting myself from three years ago. Classy...

AxlReznor -> RE: Judge Dredd (12/9/2012 3:41:00 PM)

I'm not a huge fan of this film, but I remember liking it when I was a kid. I've just never gotten the controversy over showing Dredd's face. It's a major part of the story that he gets framed and loses his status as Judge. It makes sense that he'd be stripped of his uniform as well. It may be that the story was written around the need to see the stars face, but don't know why that would necessarily be a bad thing. As far as I can see, though, other than that (and Rob Schneider) they captured the tone of the comics pretty well.
I think what doomed Dredd was it was a Stallone movie in an era where Stallone was box office poison.

actually it was the era of Stallones comeback after a string of comedy misfires and underperforming action films. Cliffhanger was a big hit(255m ww = 400m adjusted). Demo Man and The Specialist were moderate hits (159m/170m). but Dredd only did 113m ww on a 90m budget (113m=170m adjusted)

maybe Dredd looked abit too similar to Demo Man for audiences, poor reviews/bad press (negative backlash from Dredd fans/creators), competition from batman, die hard3, etc plus Demo Man/Specalist jading audiences after the promise of CF etc, and maybe Robocop having 'done' Dredd already? (and been run into the ground)

Naiilyboy -> What a film. Action, action , action. (3/10/2012 8:00:42 PM)

Two stars only, I can't believe some of the films that empire shout about, eg Anna karenina 4 stars. I Would rather life imprisonment than sit through that again. Dredd was brill, best comic book film than was for adults. He doesnt mess about with the death penalty. Hope the new robocop lives up to this. A 5 star film any day.

Normal Control -> Gets better everytime I see it (11/12/2012 6:03:51 PM)

Caught it again on TV recently after not seeing it for a few years, and surprised how accomplished it is. Hell, even the Schneider sidekick makes narrative sense. There's a lot going on in the story, and it looks fantastic considering it was Danny Cannon's first (and only?) big budget film. The soldier robot was damn intimidating when I saw it on the big screen and still is. And it's got fucking Mean Machine Angel! Stallone obviously gave a shit about the movie otherwise he wouldn't have done it at all. Up there in my holy trinity of classic under-rated movies with Waterworld and The Island. Best of all, it made Dredd 3D raise its game to an even better level.
