Yes, it's finally here: a thread to discuss The Bad Seeds, The Birthday Party, Grinderman, The Death of Bunny Monro, And The Ass Saw The Angel, The Proposition, The Road, Jesse James and pretty much anything else you can think of. Post your favourite tracks / albums and live experiences, or chat about his not-nearly-prolific-enough writing career. Begin!

Epiphany Demon -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:21:14 PM)

Did anyone see his live lounge session a month or so back? It was either BBC2 or BBC4, him and the Bad Seeds. One of them had a great beard, I laughed outrageously at the sight of it.

And on the topic of Cave, I regret to inform I haven't heard NEARLY enough of his stuff to make an insightful comment. Spotify should help. But Jesse James deserves to rule the world of film, and I made a good Nick Cave on Guitar Hero.

richCie -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:25:08 PM)

YAY! to be honest i've been thinking of starting this for a while but never gotten round to it.
i suppose i'll start with a list of my favourite tracks, and then, when i've finished it, start a discussion on And The Ass Saw The Angel.

i'm not going to be decisive enough to put these in order but here goes (and i havent listened to any Grinderman or Birthday Party or indeed all the Bad Seeds stuff by the way)

O Children
Red Right Hand
Let The Bells Ring
The Lyre of Orpheus
Hallelujah
Stagger Lee
Hiding All Away
Tupelo
The Mercy Seat
There Is A Town
Song for Bob
What Must Be Done

and just about the entirety of Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! (not so keen on Today's Lesson and Night of the Lotus Eaters)

so what have I missed?

EDIT: got the Bunny Munro website to behave. listening to chapter 1 of Bunny Munro - soundtrack is amazing. as is Nick Cave.
i think i'm going to have to buy it

Nick was on Live Lounge? Link please! [:)] Nick Cave Guitar Hero sounds surreal but brilliant.
Indeed Epi, to Spotify with thee. Here's a quick top ten (in no particular order), to help you get started:

1. Stranger Than Kindness [Your Funeral... My Trial]
2. All Tomorrow's Parties [Kicking Against The Pricks]
3. The Mercy Seat [Tender Prey]
4. (I Don't Need You To) Set Me Free [Grinderman]
5. Song For Bob [The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford]
6. Lime-Tree Arbour [The Boatman's Call]
7. Song Of Joy [Murder Ballads]
8. More News From Nowhere [Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!]
9. Six Strings That Drew Blood [Mutiny EP]
10. I Had A Dream, Joe [Henry's Dream]

I haven't really got the money to pre-order it yet, but I'll be reserving a copy at my book shop the next day I'm in town. Finally realised that it was a popup playing the music, so I got listening to the first chapter... brilliant stuff! Great picks of songs by the way.

Oh I don't have a bloody link [:D] It may not have even been live lounge... God, you ask so much of me when I do so little for you... I'm really sorry, I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, I can barely remember what shape his moustache was that night. I'll go searching for it.

And it is brilliant, I got the open shirt down and everything!

Will listen to each of these in turn after my film. Danke danke.

No problem mate, I'll take a look for it myself now in a minute or deux. It was on the BBC though?

paul_ie86 -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:43:12 PM)

I'll post in here for a reciprocal post in the Leonard Cohen thread for each post[:D]

Any suggestions for which album/band to start with?

Epiphany Demon -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:43:22 PM)

97% sure it was BBC2 or 4.

i'm wondering if the legal download will be cheaper but i really want the soundtrack aswell. and yeh i had the same problem with the pop up, it was blocked yet still playing.

gonna have to listen to all those on your list a fair few i aint heard (tho good shout on More News From Nowhere, possibly my overall favourite though We Call Upon The Author is a real grower.

paul_ie86 -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:47:40 PM)

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=62D288CACB1955BF&search_query=BBC+Nick+Cave

This it?

Olaf -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:48:53 PM)

Is the soundtrack being released separately or only with the audiobook? I really want to get it, but I want to have a physical copy of the book. Your list actually makes me want to put on The Lyre of Orpheus again, I forgot how good the title track is.

Also Paul: start with Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! I reckon, then work your way back.

Epiphany Demon -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:49:31 PM)

That's it, someone kept requesting a song, he kept saying no. Well done Paul, gold star!

paul_ie86 -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:52:48 PM)

Thank you. I was only half joking about the Leonard Cohen thread, btw[:D]

Olaf -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:54:40 PM)

I have to post about the Cohen album I listened to earlier, so I'll be there in a second. In the meantime, thankyoo very much for those videos - I've seen one or two of them but there's loads there that I haven't come across already, cheers!

paul_ie86 -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (28/7/2009 11:56:19 PM)

It's grand. I'll listen to them after I finish Begin To Hope

richCie -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (29/7/2009 12:01:14 AM)

another track i forgot to mention was Lovely Creature and Do You Love Me?

there's so many!

i think the Bad Seeds are very love/hate though my brother despises them even though our music tastes are normally very very close and he loves Cave's soundtrack work.

i havent seen the soundtrack listed seperately, it might only be a few tracks and listening to the 1st chapter on the website its the subtle ways its used that are noticeable, like when Bunny is looking out the window. it also goes on on the website about how its been specially designed to be played on headphones for the full experience and all that. see what gets announced closer to the release, could always get the audibook then the paperback when its out?

also if you have a look at Bunny Abroad you can see some of the alternate covers - i'm digging the Czech one: http://www.argo.cz/knihy/147741/smrt-kralika-munroa/

paul_ie86 -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (29/7/2009 12:09:24 AM)

Oh, The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford score is made of win

richCie -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (29/7/2009 12:13:10 AM)

yet another post about the Death of Bunny Munro but i only just noticed this: http://www.thedeathofbunnymunro.com/buy.html

look at the one in the middle. i want.

Olaf -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (29/7/2009 12:15:44 AM)

That Czech cover is awesome (sadly not many of the others up yet though). I reckon I'll place an order on the book, and wait til closer to the release date about the audiobook. Depends on the price of the download I think.

Also, how could I forget Mutiny In Heaven and The Carny - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_40Pl6_oqq8 / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqfS7NdcwdM

richCie -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (29/7/2009 12:25:09 AM)

and i forgot Carry Me

let's play a nick cave lyrics game (i'm bored by the way)

"THERE'S A WAR COMING" - wat song?

Olaf -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (29/7/2009 12:27:30 AM)

Hiding All Away from Abattoir Blues! (is it sad that I didn't need to Google that?)

"HANDS UP WHO WANTS TO DIE!!"

Another one then:
"Rosary clutched in his hand, he died with tubes up his nose
And a cabal of angels with finger cymbals chanted his name in code"

CLUE from a rather recent release..

We Call Upon The Author of course!

next one: "Yes", she said, "Yes", she said
"Yes, I'll walk with you a while"
I was a joyful man, she led

Olaf -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (29/7/2009 12:58:26 AM)

I've got that album on at the moment actually - that's from Lovely Creature.

Next one:
It was back in '32, when times were hard
He had a Colt 45 and a deck of cards

Stagger Lee!

he wore rat drawn shoes and an old Stetson hat

Next:
Come on Cancer let's walk outside
breathe the autumn air

oh and my "Australian aunt" informs me that Ghosts of the Civil Dead is 70% of the way here.

Olaf -> RE: The Nick Cave Thread (29/7/2009 1:27:41 AM)

[:D]@ "Australian Aunt"

Autumn air = must be Let The Bells Ring!
Final one for me tonight, I'll leave you with this one:
"I called her my nubian princess, I gave her some sweet-back bad-ass jive
I spent the next seven years between her legs pining for my wife"

or even, considering its aptness for now:
"Well, I've gotta say
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye"
