I was looking around and there was no thread dedicated to one of American cinemas masters and one of my favourite directors Marty Scorsese, the guy that made some of the most awesome movies and was shamefully overlooked at the oscars till 2006 as we all know, finally recieved the oscar for his movie The Departed which was fucking awesome and deserved to win anyway even though many people think it was a sympathy thing from the academy towards Marty. I havent seen all his movies but I have seen enough good ones to make land a place in my top 10 directors list. heres my favourites of his so far... 1) Goodfellas 2) Raging Bull 3) The Departed 4) Cape Fear 5) Mean Streets ... if you're wondering wheres Taxi Driver, Casino etc, I havent seen them yet, Im waiting for Taxi Driver to come out on Blu-Ray and I own Casino on DVD but still havent got around to watching it. With the release of Shutter Island coming really soon, I thought I'd have a Scorsese marathon a week before the release. What do you all think of his style, his movies, his love for The Rolling Stones??

Taxi Driver is my favourite film and is the greatest film ever made. Scorsese is an overlooked genius. People tend to perfer Spielberg because his films are not as difficult as Scorsese's. I cant wait for Shutter Island it does look promising, just watched Casino last night for the first time and yes 5/5, De Niro and Pesci on top form just like they were in Goodfellas, and Stone's performance was great as well, which is a good thing because I'd given up on her as an actress after watching Basic Instinct 2. Thank god he's no longer working with Harvey Weinstein (see gangs of new york). Scorsese will get to edit his own films now.

How could you like Basic Instinct 2 it was absolute bollocks, when I first watched the first movie people were slagging it off but when I did watch it, it was a really well structured thriller, Basic Instinct 2 takes away that mystery and replaces it with a dumb story thats always eager to get to the sex. If Paul Verhoeven directed the second then perhaps things might have been different.

Yes I've seen the King of Comedy, and it was a really good film if I did a Scorsese top 10 then it would be there. When I watched Mean Streets I wasnt really in the mood for a flick like that so I was only half paying attention but I liked what I saw, I need to give it a rewatch Asda have the DVD for Ł2. I havent seen all of Scorsese's movies and theres some good ones I havent seen yet but Im trying to get them all on DVD so I watch the all in chronological order before the release of Shutter Island.

I enjoyed basic instinct two as a throw away thriler.And it has one of my favourite ever lines in a film 'even Oedipus didn't see his mother coming'.

Saw the Trailer for his latest today, while he's way past his best, this one did look like a step in a different and bold direction. I can see an outstanding supporting cast, it's just a case of if Leo can pull his part off at the heart of the film, i suspect based on the trailer he maybe the weak link.

Whether leo's performance is crappy or not it doesnt matter this movie is still going to do great business even more so now that Scorsese has got his first oscar, I can see this movie getting a few oscar nods to. Michelle williams looks good judging from the trailer.

I love Martin Scorsese. The man is a genius and America's greatest living director. He has a unique style but never substitutes substance for style.. His films have both in bucket-loads! Man, for a Scorcese thread, the discussion here is very dry, and in no way deserving of such a great, influetial talent. Of course, like everybody, I love Taxi Driver, Casino, Goodfellas, etc. But perhaps my personal favourite film from the masteri s After Hours. I love the "feel" and theme derived from the picture. The "after hours" of New York. Whenever I spend a night in brick lane, London, I get that vibe and it feels so good.

I love the man's movies so much. There is no one else in Hollywood who can provide filmmaking that is a brilliant mixture of superb editing, wonderful photography and brilliant direction of actors. Some directors are great at visuals, some are great at working with actors, others are good at action sequences, but the guy is good at everything, nearly all aspects of his films are masterclasses, be it cutting, lighting or coaxing a performance. For the record my top three are; 1-Goodfellas 2-The Departed (it was the first of his movies I saw on the big screen, so that's why it's up this high) 3-Raging Bull The only dissapointment I can level at him is Gangs of New York, incredibly dissapointed with it, especially coming after a superb opening ten minutes which lulled me into thinking it was going to be better than what it was going to be.

One of the films I always feel is overlooked of his is Last Temptation of Christ Hardly any attention is given to it when talking about Scorsese, but it may be one of my personal favourites of silver mogul On the subject of Shutter Island, I think it's a very brave step in a new direction for Scorsese, it's good to see that even after a 40-odd year career a film maker can move in a new direction with his work. From the trailer, it looks very very un-Scorsese. It looks like he's taking a bit of a risk here but I love Scorsese when he tries to be un-Scorsese.

What can I say about Scorsese? Everything he touches turns to solid gold! Really looking forward to Shutter Island. He always assembles the best cast for his films. Goodfellas was incredible. I didn't like Casino at first, but I have since grown to love it. It's the best looking of his films in my opinion, the photography is so stunning. I'm glad that he got the Oscar for The Departed, but the majority of his work should have been given a load of awards. From what I've heard, his music documentaries are superb. Scorceses' movies always have a great cast of actors who are playing real characters (interesting, flawed, idiosyncratic) with nice touches in both dialogue, setting and music. I am amazed this guy has not won more Oscars, he's one of Spielberg's oldest buddies too but just a good at bringing the humanity to a film.

Hmm, my favourite Scorsese films (in no particular order) would have to be: Taxi Driver Goodfellas The Aviator Kings Of Comedy Raging Bull I was very disappointed with Gangs, which is - sigh - the only one of his films I've seen in a cinema. I skipped out on Departed (cinema) and am glad to have done so. Personally I really don't get the love for that film, because all the best scenes are taken straight from the original, and anything that doesn't actually work is the 'original' material. For the record, one of the worst things about the film is 'Dignan' who feels forced, annoying, and about as Award worthy as Steven Seagal. "I'm just in this picture for the ending, you c--ck sucking c--nt! Excuse me while I shout a bit more, but don't forget me, cuz by the end of the picture I'll actually be pretty f---in important!" Rolls eyes.

Has anyone seen Last Temptaion of Christ and Kundun? Thought alongside Raging Bull they are some of Marty's most beautiful films. And the final 20 minutes of Kundun left a lump in my throat, and THOSE FINAL WORDS in THe Last temptaion of Christ cannot be described. By the way, I actually think Last Temptation and Kundun are very interesting films, possibly the most in Marty's career.
