TRM -> RE: HKL titles to be re-released by Cine Asia (19/3/2011 12:49:57 AM)

That is fantastic news. I already have all of the Bruce Lee films, but I would be quite tempted to pick up the new releases anyway if the features are worth it. And its great to see someone has finally picked up from where HKL left off.

Rhubarb -> RE: HKL titles to be re-released by Cine Asia (19/3/2011 1:24:39 AM)

Yeah its awesome that the HKL label will still live on in some form, and its great that some of the ones that I didn't pick up won't be lost forever!

Brilliant news! [:D]

chris static -> RE: HKL titles to be re-released by Cine Asia (21/3/2011 3:39:07 PM)

I hope this means I can get a copy of Prodigal Son rather than the beaten old VHS I have!

Aye, it was. [sm=happy34.gif]
I was getting sick of keeping the same av for long periods (even though some excellent folks made some excellent animated gifs for me, via this thread), so I decided to use shots of whichever film I've seen most recently, be they good or bad films.
Latest = Ringo Lam's Victim.

oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.... as you can tell I am excited, I only bought a few HKL releases 7-8 years back, they were so darn expensive, hopefully these Cine Asia re-releases will drop in price like their other titles. Looks like their are only 9 titles there, hoping they release more. Seriously though Im gonna buy all of them on that list.

ThunderKat -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (7/6/2011 10:25:00 PM)

Ha! This'll kill the people holding their original HKL's for value.

New Police Story is still quite readily availible, hope theres a blu ray!
And if anyone from showbox/cine asia happens to read this, please check out the original japanese DVD release of NPS, lots of special features! Alternate scenes/ending even!

(I remember reading Benny Chan reshot alot of NPS, Stephen Fung was in it at one point.)

ThunderKat -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (10/6/2011 7:44:20 PM)

Cool, play.com have a 2 for £15 blu ray deal going right.

Can pick up all the cine-asia releases so far, upto and including 71 - Into The Fire & Ip Man 2

Actually that link does not list all the films as some are listed under studio Cine-Asia and on the HMV site they are all listed under showbox.

QualityChimp -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (29/6/2011 12:45:56 PM)

Hi! Long time lurker, first time poster.

Does anybody know if the Bey Logan commentaries are new ones re-recorded for the Cine-Asia releases or are they pretty much the same as the original HKL ones?

Will they put new commentaries by him on films that didn't feature him before such as Armor of God and Police Story 2?

Hmmm... it looks like they're the same ones judging by this:
http://www.cine-asia.com/content/HKL-police-story2.php
"Feature length audio commentary by Hong Kong Cinema Expert Miles Wood and Hong Kong stuntman Jude Poyer"

That commentary is really dull. They don't have much background information, comment on what's happening on screen or are even silent for some sections.
I'd love to hear Bey's thoughts about PS2, especially the playground fight!

I think I've answered my own question there...sorry!

The last time that I've looked play.com were selling them all on pre-order for £7.99, much cheaper than most of the Amazon releases.

I can't tell you with any definitive knowledge but I think it's a pretty safe bet that they will will be exactly the same as the previous Hong Kong Legends DVDs, except with cine Asia logos and advertising/trailers, maybe new menus but I do would doubt they would go to the extra expense

phoenix_rising -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (18/7/2011 5:28:49 PM)

Is New Fist of Fury any good? I'm dubious about any Chan film made before Snake In The Eagles Shadow as I've seen some stinkers of his.

rich -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (20/7/2011 12:43:25 AM)

Yeah I think it's unlikely it's going to be great - looks to be another Lo Wei attempt at making some money from Bruce Lee's death. Snake in the Eagles Shadow and Fearless Hyena are probably the earliest ones worth sitting through.

Gram123 -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (22/7/2011 1:19:24 AM)

For early Jackie Chan starring roles...

Avoid Police Woman (1973) aka Rumble in Hong Kong. He doesn't really star, despite his pic on the cover.

I'd be interested to see Chan's first starring role in Cub Tiger From Kwang Tung aka Little Tiger of Canton (also '73), but I wouldn't expect great things, and the UK Showbox / Rarescope DVD print is supposed to be pretty awful.
And by all acounts, everyone should avoid the redub version called Master with Cracked Fingers aka Snake Fist Fighter.

Then there's All in the Family (1975), a sex comedy with no action in it. Well, no kung fu, anyway! [:D]

From 1976 there's New Fist of Fury, which is supposed to be ok at a push, Killer Meteors, which is apparently a fairly rubbish (Chan is on the cover, but he's actually the baddie) and Shaolin Wooden Men, which I've seen a dubbed English version of, and it's ok - the earliest of his films I've seen that I'd say is worth a punt.

To Kill With Intrigue from '77 is widely considered pants.

Then in '78, you've got Snake in the Eagles Shadow as Rich mentios, plus Drunken Master, both v. good. Also, the same year, Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin which is good, and Spiritual Kung Fu, which is pretty goofy but ok.
I'm hoping Cine Asia re-release Magnificent Bodyguards as it's one from that era that I haven't seen, but would pick up, as is Half a Loaf of Kung Fu, though that wasn't previously on HKL, so won't be on Cine Asia's roster.

Then in '79, you have Fearless Hyena which is, as rich mentions, is pretty good, plus Dragon Fist, ditto.

You're pretty much ok from that point onwards, but you might want to avoid Fantasy Mission Force  - Chan's on cover, but not the star, and it's apparently a pretty weak / average film; and Fearless Hyena 2 which Lo Wei created out of leftover footage from the first film, should be avoided.

rich -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (23/7/2011 12:00:50 AM)

Well Drunken Master goes without saying [:)]

Never got around to seeing either Shaolin Wooden Men or Magnificent Bodyguards (both re-released as "Superbit" versions on the last batch if HKL discs I think, probably easiest just to rent)

I would say avoid Half a loaf of Kung Fu, watched about 10 minutes of it and it is just bad. Recently watch Snake in Eagle's Shadow for the first time and that was pretty decent however not as good as Drunken Master.

With Cine Asia re-releasing a load I'm thinking of collecting the HKL Jackie Chan films I missed out irst time round. I'm looking at Dragons Forever and Heart of the Dragon, but I've heard mixed things... Anyone else seen them? Are they any good? Also is there any word if Snake in the Eagle's Shadow is going to be amongst the Cine Asia re-releases? I seem to have lost my copy... [:(]

MI Cruise -> RE: Cine Asia (28/8/2011 7:08:15 PM)

from what I've heard Dragons Forever is supposed to be really good not sure about Heart of the Dragon but Im excited about both of them as I've yet to watch them as well.

Not sure about whether Snake in the Eagles Shadow will be released; here are some other titles coming from Cine Asia in the near future...

Dragons Forever is one of the seminal HK action films of the 80s. I doubt any self-titled fan of HK cinema hasn't seen it. The final ten minutes all out brawl is incredible.

Heart of the Dragon is more of a drama but it does contain some of the more brutal fight scenes of Jackie's career.

Timon -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (7/1/2012 6:59:41 PM)

Amazon has most of Cine Asia's catalogue going for a fiver.

Got Dragons Forever (never got it the first time around and for ages it was £50+ on Amazon Marketplace) and Shaolin.

Timon -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (13/1/2012 11:32:37 AM)

Also, it looks like over the next few months all of HKL's back catalogue will be re-released and 1911: Revolution.

TRM -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (13/1/2012 9:50:13 PM)

Yeah I noticed this when you posted a few days ago. This is great news! So much Chan to be viewed over the next few months.

I have that, but haven't got round to watching it yet. Imported a load of films from Hong Kong that have occupied me recently. I'm not overly concerned about the picture though, as they were all from Toby Russell's private collection, so they should at least be watchable. If you want bad, I have the pre-remaster Hong Kong DVDs of Secret Rivals and Secret Rivals 2. They're horrific, with loads of scratches, washed out colours that vary in quality throughout, and subtitles that run off the screen. I can see why HKL rejected them in the end. The Soulblade DVDs were an improvement, but they still require so much work.

Surely they're keeping them because they're still the best releases in many cases?

rich -> RE: 2 more Jackie Chan films on Cine Asia (20/2/2012 11:35:22 PM)

I was under the impression Cine Asia are simply the same thing in a new case. Waiting for Iceman Cometh, Winners and Sinners and Wheels on Meals to get re-released myself, have collected the rest over the years that I want. Only the latter has a confirmed date that I'm aware of though.
