I think it stems beyond that. Poor direction and shitty acting can easily be overlooked in a film of this ilk, but what we're talking about here extends further in to darker, morally dubious areas. It's Right-wing propoganda, with a really fucked up attitude towards some of the most distressing things in America's history. It has a nasty undertone, I really don't trust its intentions. Granted, this may sound a tad hyperbolic, but I don't want to be too clear in what I'm saying for fear of spoiling anything. But yes, its a mess of a film.

For those of us who have no intention of seeing it, but are nonetheless piqued with interest by your review, will there be a spoiler-heavy version? [:)]

Here's a radical idea; how about no-one make any conclusions about the movie until they've actually seen it unless they have the power to see into the future in which case can they please let me know what the next Lottery numbers will be?

Erm I think you'll find it already has been seen.

Ghidorah -> RE: Total Film (26/6/2011 11:36:52 PM)

Vecrotus from AVPGalaxy.net had posted a summary of what happens in the film. Those who don't want to watch the movie fearing it will be bad as the second can highlight and read.

Major spoilers

On July 20th 1969, the Apollo 11 discovered a crashed alien ship on the moon. They also found its captain: Sentinel Prime.

In the present day, the Autobots have now become fully sanctioned members of the U.S. military. Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Mirage and Wheeljack investigate a nuclear facility in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Optimus Prime and Ratchet oversee the destruction of the decommissioned NEST facility in Diego Garcia. With their mission complete in the Middle East, Optimus commands the Autobots to head to Washington D.C, while he, Ratchet and Captain Lennox leave for Prypiat, Ukraine, following a lead on a recently resurfaced enemy.

In Washington D.C. Sam, now lives with his new girlfriend Carly Miller, secretary working for Dylan, a CEO of a major investment company. The pair also lives with decommissioned Autobots; Wheelie and Brains, whose services were turned down by the Autobots. Sam leaves for his new job interview.

Arriving in the uninhabitable city of Prypiat, Optimus, Ratchet and Lennox investigate a dig site where construction workers (who wear special suits) have uncovered a mysterious object resembling a giant pillar. Suddenly, they are attacked by a huge Decepticon named Driller. Some of the construction workers are killed as Optimus orders Ratchet and the humans to retreat, while he battles the Driller. The Driller escapes.

In Africa, Megatron, Starscream and Soundwave learn of the discovery of the pillar by the Autobots. Soundwave deploys Laserbeak to attack Sam. Sam is attacked by Laserbeak, who retreats and reports back to Soundwave after being injured by Sam. Sam then heads to NEST operations in Washington D.C. along with Bumblebee, Carly, Wheelie and Brains, where he is introduced to U.S. Intelligence Director Mearing.  Director Mearing reveals that the space race in 1969 was in response to the Ark crashing on the moon, and reveals that they found a deactivated Sentinel Prime.

The Autobots intend to retrieve Sentinel Prime on a ship called The Xantium, built by a hidden sub-team of Autobots called The Wreckers. The Wreckers had been hidden from the public eye due to their abrasive personalities. Optimus Prime, Ratchet and Bumblebee use The Xantium to retrieve Sentinel Prime on the moon. On Earth, Optimus revives Sentinel Prime.

Later, Sam meets with Seymour Simmons, who has now become a millionaire after writing books about his experiences with Sector Seven. He also has a butler and assistant named Dutch. Soon Carly arrives who gets into an argument with Sam. Carly angrily leaves for a party hosted by Dylan. Following a lead, Sam and co arrive at Atlantic City, where they meet up with a former Russian cosmonaut. After a brief scuffle, the cosmonaut informs the group that the Soviet Union were the first to send cameras onto the moon. Footage revealed over a hundred pillars lying over the surface of the moon, however only five were recovered. Sam deduces that the Decepticons must have recovered the other pillars. However, he is puzzled as to why the Decepticons left Sentinel Prime unharmed. He believes that Sentinel Prime maybe the only one who knows how to use the pillars. He realises that the Decepticons left Sentinel Prime, so that the Autobots could recover him as Optimus is the only one who could revive him.

Realising that it was a trap, Sam warns Director Mearing about Sentinel Prime’s value. The Autobots, Sam and co escort Sentinel Prime back to NEST operations. Along the way, the group is attacked by a group of Decepticon clones called the Dreads. In the ensuing battle, Simmons is severely injured by a Dread, while Sentinel Prime escapes.

Amidst all the chaos, Megatron awakens Shockwave who is buried underneath Chernobyl after crash-landing many years ago and causing the Tunguska event.

Soon Sentinel Prime betrays the Autobots and murders Ironhide. He reveals that he always was the key before battling and gravely injuring Optimus, and joining forces with Megatron and the Decepticons.

In Gould Estate, Sam arrives and collects Carly from Dylan’s party before being attacked by Laserbeak and Soundwave. Dylan reveals that he and his family have been working with the Decepticons all along, noting that his father helped the U.S. government cover up the moon crash landing. In exchange for Carly’s life, Dylan forces Sam to spy on the Autobots and inform the Decepticons about the Autobots intended plans. He also forcibly gives Sam a bracelet like device to monitor the Autobots signal.

Sentinel Prime speaks to the humans, revealing that he is the true leader of the Autobots, and his plans to mine Earth’s resources to rebuild Cybertron. He also demands the exile of the former Autobots in order to avoid any conflict. If this agreement is not met, Sentinel Prime reveals he will destroy all human life with a battalion of Transformers.

Later, Sam meets up with Director Mearing and Robert Epps, who reveal that the UN has exiled the Autobots. The Autobots intend to leave on The Xantium. Bumblebee remains on Earth, disguised as an old Datsun and helps Sam get rid of the bracelet like device given to him by Dylan. The Autobots leave on The Xantium.

Having secured the city of Chicago and following a meeting between Sentinel Prime and Megatron who are starting to have a friction, Dylan reveals to Carly Sentinel Prime’s intention to bring Earth and Cybertron together using the space bridge and enslaving all of humanity to mine its resources. He reveals that the pillars are what will activate the space bridge.

Suddenly, Sam arrives and attempts to free Carly only to be attacked by Laserbeak. Laserbeak is destroyed by a Decepticon tank piloted by Bumblebee, while Dylan escapes. Sam rescues Carly and the Autobots return to the city. Dylan informs Megatron about this; however Sentinel Prime reveals that he anticipated this move on Optimus’ part.

As the Autobots prepare for battle, Shockwave arrives with the Driller. The Autobots quickly realise that they are powerless against Shockwave and the Driller. Carly reveals to Sam that if they can destroy the control pillar opening the space bridge, the whole space bridge will collapse, having learnt this of off Dylan. However, Epps reveals that they only have one shot left with the launcher and radios for backup.

Eventually, the Autobots are overpowered by the Decepticons and captured. Soundwave kills Mirage, and just as he prepares to kill Bumblebee he is knocked aside by a Wheelie and Brains piloted Decepticon flagship. The Autobots manage to escape and Bumblebee kills Soundwave. NEST and the Autobots then destroy the Driller. Starscream is also killed by Sam and a few NEST soldiers.

Wheeljack outfits Optimus with a jetpack just as Sentinel Prime and Megatron prepare to open the space bridge. Optimus arrives and massacres a horde of Decepticons before battling and killing Shockwave. Just as the space bridge opens, Sentinel Prime betrays Megatron. As Cybertron begins to come closer to Earth, an angered Megatron is persuaded by Carly to destroy Sentinel Prime just as Optimus battles him.

Megatron and Optimus join forces and destroy Sentinel Prime.

I would do, but I need to consult with the wife first. Sad I know, but she gets really worked up about these things, and I don't want it to go any further than it needs to (which is probably my Mac's Trash bin).

Yes, that is a massive thumb on my forehead.

Haven't seen the film yet but I'm taking your review with a huge amount of salt - in particular the final paragraph:

***Mild Spoilers***

"Which leads me to my final, most damning point. At one point in the film, Bay evokes the image of the "falling man”, one of the key visual images of the events of 9/11, as a gang of US Army 'grunts' skydive across a semi-post-apocalyptic skyline. Crass doesn't even begin to cover it, with the sequence unforgivable insensitive and a new low for Bay. It's exploitative nonsense of the highest order, and not at all hyperbolic to suggest that it reaches a level of vile thus far unequalled in the 21st century mainstream cinema."

Sorry, but this is ridiculous - this is proper tabloid journalism; putting 2 and 2 together to make 5 in the interest of making a hyperbolic, outraged point. Just becasue an image 'reminds' you of something doesn't mean it's offensive. A dozen men skydiving past a sky-scraper is a world away from the 'falling man' - the documentary of that 'story' in itself was a crass piece of exploitative journalism, singling out one victim from thousands and then scrutinsing and hypothesising over his final actions. Making a link to this just proves you're searching for these things.

There may well be right-wing, pro-military content in this film (hell, I expect it from Bay), but making the above point your over-riding summary completely negates the validity of your prior argument I'm afraid.

People have brought out this canard since it was announced that Bay was going to direct the first film - and it still remains utterly unconvincing. People paying their £8 should get a decent story and decent acting - and from adambatman's review it would seem they get neither.

I refused to read the full review and was right to do so.

Totally agree with you tommypocket. Get a grip man you are the exactly the same as how you are portraying the filmakers and I quote "fucked up attitude towards some of the most distressing things in America's history"

Do you really hate Bay that much or do you have the same opinion of all films post 9/11 with burning buildings, collapsing skyscrapers, crashing planes, skydivers ???

Yes Bay might have put all the above in, infact i'm sure he has but then it is a massive battle in a city in a film about warring alien robots !

You see where Im going with this ?
