That other DVD looks good, as well. The Searchers? Is it a kind of prototype-Taxi Driver, with John Wayne as a tortured soul trying, misguidedly, to liberate a young girl from her supposed oppressors? Perhaps with a small role for Hank Worden? I got all that from the front cover.

Cheers Rick, there goes another £5.88 of my already-stretched-to-breaking monthly wage...[:)]  As a fan of Greene's book, I'm interested to see how a movie version works.  But having been brought up on The Quiet Man (got a pic at home of my grandparents posing with John Wayne on set [:)]), another Irish outing for Vic McLaglan and Ford was enough to sell it

I just bought House of Wax with Mystery of the Wax Museum on there as a special feature for three quid.  What a steal.  Haven't got round to watching House of Wax yet, Mystery is gold though.  Gorgeous looking film.

I've actually bought much more than this but most of what I've bought is from the 70s. Didn't feel like sitting down and seeing which ones were before '75.

Also been picking up a good amount of Rossellini, Visconti and De Sica on VHS for films that have no DVD release (or, at least, no R1 release).

As you can see, I've been busy.

Bloody hell! Did you rob a bank, or take out a second mortgage?
Some superb films in that list, though, and a number that are on my must have list. Unfortunately, we don't have the range of Classic films on release here that are available overseas, and ordering on the Internet can be an expensive business once you add in the cost of postage and packaging.

That's unfortunate. I can't speak for R2 (that's UK, right?) but there are a ton of deals to be had on ebay if you're patient and a little lucky. You'd be surprised, I've found a great many of the movies on my list have R2 PAL releases but no R1 NTSC releases. I suppose it all evens out in the end.

I'm actually in New Zealand, which is Region 4. I think there is a far more comprehensive choice of movies available in the UK than there is here.
Pre 1970, the choice is pretty limited, although the odd few gems do come up occasionally.
Same with foreign language films. Pretty limited, and the distributors tend to take a pretty hit and miss attitude to what they do release.

btw I finally managed to get a copy of Quai des orfevres, which I think you first recommended to me about 3 years ago [:D] I hope its worth the wait.

I went a bit WW2 crazy and got the following as well:

I have got a multi region player, but as I said to BigA it can be an expensive business ordering from overseas and money is rather tight at present.
Let me know what you think of Quai Des Orfevres. I rate it among the best police procedurals I've seen. Louis Jouvet is superb.

It really is. Got a pretty decent treatment, as well. The Seventh Victim has a documentary "Shadows in the Dark: The Val Lewton Legacy" as well as a feature commentary by film historian Steve Haberman.

The Leopard Man has a feature commentary by William Friedkin.

Bedlam has a feature commentary by film historian Tom Weaver.

I Walked With A Zombie has a feature commentary by film historians Kim Newman and Steve Jones.

The Body Snatcher has a commentary by Steve Haberman and director Robert Wise.

And there's a commentary with historian Greg Mank w/ audio interview excerpts of Simone Simon on both Cat People and The Curse of the Cat People. Not to mention the Scorsese documentary. I still can't believe I got it for only $19.99. Like I said, had to have been a listing error by the seller.

On a side note, I'm really impressed with the work of Turner Classic Movies and, especially, Martin Scorsese in both restoring and releasing so many gems from the past but also in getting the word out on them. Based on the releases of the past few years by Criterion I have to imagine they're taking quite a que from Scorsese. Just watch his BBC special "My Personal Journey Through American Cinema" and then at the Criterions that came out after its broadcast. His doc "My Voyage to Italy" is also outstanding. I worked a day on the TCM Classic Film Festival this year here in Hollywood and my crew badge got me admission to all films, panels and discussions. It was mind-blowing. If anyone reading this has been tossing around the idea of taking a trip to the US do yourself a favor and schedule it around the next TCM festival. It's pure bliss.

It's amazing. I used to think I had seen a lot of films but the past 12 months have only showed me that I'm so far from seeing everything I want to. It's kind of overwhelming. I've got 80+ films I'm watching on ebay I plan to buy and another 330+ in my Netflix queue and I feel like I haven't even scratched the surface. How does one prioritize which films to watch now and which to save for later? For every film I cross off my list I add 4 or 5.
