Just got my hands on Pandora's Box[;)]

And a rather nice Charlie Chan Chanthology

The Chan films made at Fox are pretty much my favourite movies ever in the whole history of the world EVER EVER EVER. And the six in the Chanthology - the first six made at Poverty Row studio Monogram starring Fox's second Chan, Sidney Toler - are good fun too. A bit creaky, a little poky but very watchable - and featuring Benson Fong, a personal favourite of mine (I don't like him as much as the mighty Keye Luke, mind, who played Chan's son in most of the early Fox Chans). I picked the set up with some Christmas money and watched the last one the other day. Good escapist fun, though the mysteries don't always make that much sense. The Shanghai Cobra is probably my favourite. Are you a big Chan fan? I'd be interested to know what you think of the set.

You have excellent taste. It was Hitchcock's personal favourite, but you probably know that.

My latest are:

Anatomy Of A Murder (1959) Dir: Otto Preminger
(James Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, Arthur O'Connell, Eve Arden, George C. Scott)

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1955) Dir: Alfred Hitchcock
(James Stewart, Doris Day, Brenda De Banzie, Bernard Miles)

Ministry Of Fear (1944) Dir: Fritz Lang
(Ray Milland, Marjorie Reynolds, Dan Duryea)

Somewhere In The Night (1948) Dir: Joseph L. Mankiewicz
(John Hodiak, Nancy Guild, Lloyd Nolan, Richard Conte)

Myself, Mrs_7 and Larry Lemon went to see that at the NFT the other year. It's amazing. I've picked up these natty releases of late, as I had a birthday this month.

Anna Christie, Anna Karenina, Ninotchka, Queen Christina, Camille, Mata Hari

Definitely the best purchase I made in a long while - it's pretty meagre on extras but I'm talking purely about the quality of the films themselves...and er Mata Hari's ok too I suppose.  I'm utterly bewitched.

If you liked Jimmy Stewert in Wonderful life you should try "Mr. Smith goes to Washington".  He's awesome in that, and it's a good film.  It's dealing with corrupt politicians in Washington DC but at the same time has this weird sense of humour throughout the film and Stewert at his "gee, shucks" best.  Oh and "Rear Window" and "Vertigo".  Two of Stewert's best films and two of Hitchcock's best films.  Two birds, one stone! [:D]

"12 Angry Men" is brilliant.  Just 12 jury members in one room and it's incredibly suspensful and gripping.

Have you watched many film noirs?  I'd definatly recommend grabbing some.  Although the classic films you like are all quite happy ones, most noirs are not so happy. _  You should definatly check out "Double Indemnity", it's directed by Billy wilder so if you like "Some like it hot" you might enjoy that.  And if you like Bogart then grab "The Maltese Falcon".  Ooh and "Scarlet Street" is amazing, so depressing though.

Hope that helps. [:)]

Though if you have cash to spare on DVDs can you send me some?  I'm all out. >_<

Sarah1992 -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (18/5/2009 11:01:30 AM)

Wow, what a list!
I'll definitely check 'em out[:)]
Thanks V. Much[:)][:D][:)]

Lex Romero -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (18/5/2009 11:20:04 AM)

That's ok. [:)]

Aw so many DVDs, so little money. [:(]  I really should try and make use of the universities film library before I leave this year, they have loads of random stuff.  Or steal some. _

Sarah1992 -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (18/5/2009 1:26:53 PM)

lol
My college library has loads of film too, both old and new...
I think Double Indemnity is in there, actually...
That gives me an idea[sm=happy13.gif]

Lex Romero -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (19/5/2009 3:02:31 AM)

Go for it.  Marvel at Walter Neff's ability to light a match by flicking it with his thumb!  Be amazed by the amount of times he calls Phyllis "baby"!

After watching Mr Smith Goes To Washington on Film4 yesterday, I came to the harsh realisation that this was missing from my library.  So, in an effort to put this heinous error to rights, I went straight to Amazon, where I found this beauty:

[image]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51upGCt%2BqIL._SS400_.jpg[/image]

All for the princely sum of 15.98 - bargain!!

Professor Moriarty -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (21/5/2009 4:14:22 PM)

Anatomy of a Murder is a great film that I watched again the other weekend. And of course you don't just get Jimmy Stwart for your money, but also George C. Scott.

Bell, Book and Candle is enjoyable fluff to be enjoyed on a lazy Sunday when you just want to be lightly entertained.

You Can't Take it With You has Jean Arthur in, so how could you complain, even if it is Capra being Capra, if you know what I mean.

Two Rode Together I don't know and Man from Laramie I think I've seen, but don't recall very well. Looks like a mighty fine set though.

I have to go and watch Jimmy Stewart now, here would be my dream collection just for a bit of range:

- Destry Rides Again
- The Shop Around the Corner
- Rope
- The Glenn Miller Story
- Harvey

I'd love to know what the pictures are like on these. At the moment the only Hitchhiker I have is on one of the US multi-noir DVDs and the version of Kansas City Confidential over here wasn't that great - that's the region 1?
