siegfried -> CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (23/2/2009 12:57:31 AM)

There's a similar thread to this in the World Cinema section, so I thought why not here as well.
Hopefully it'll stimulate some discussion.
My latest, just arrived from DVD Pacific:

Valentino in The Sheik and Son Of The Sheik.

Two Val Lewton classics - I Walked With A Zombie and The Body Snatcher (Karloff and Lugosi together)

Fritz Lang's noir masterpiece The Woman In The Window (With Edward G Robinson and Joan Bennett)

7 Days in May....Burt Lancaster is superb. Possibly his finest performance.

Great film. I should also give it a re-watch as I saw it too close to Scarlet Street, another Lang Robinson combo that I enjoyed very much

Always pleased to see some love for Lancaster who gets less praise than he deserves imo

Great film, and Karloff couldn't have had a better swan song.
Unfortunately, it's not available here, but I'd love to get hold of a copy.

I purchased it off Amazon without fuss.  So you should be able to do the same. As you say great little film and Karloff is superb.

Just discovered that I can get a copy here in New Zealand, so won't need to order from overseas.
Thanks for the suggestion, though.

It's a cracking little low-budget thriller. Karloff is excellent playing what basically amounts to a reflected image of himself but it is Tim O'Kelly who really chills the blood. His mixture of deep emotional detatchment and outward normality reminded me of Carl Boehm's turn in Peeping Tom.

***SPOILER***

The scene where he calmly shoots dead his wife and mother is absolutely shocking. The previous scene where he smokes his cigarette in his darkened bedroom builds up the tension but Bogdanovich cleverly allows us to feel as if the threat has passed by waiting until the bright, safe sunshine of the next morning for the executions to take place.

*** END SPOILER***

A very enjoyable series of films. I have had the first for a while but it is nice to catch up with the rest. Fond memories of when BBC 2 used to show decent classic films every Saturday afternoon.

I also purchased this.

Bought Nosferatu (1922). I was looking for the Cabinet of Dr Caligari but thought this would be a nice substitute.  Does anyone know if the remake is any good?

By the way, its Nosferatu we are talking about right? I discovered a remake of Caligari.[&:]

Made in 1962, and starring Glynis Johns and Dan O'Herlihy. It bears very little resemblance to the original, and frankly I'd avoid it.

Lazy wolf eyes -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (12/4/2009 4:04:19 PM)

I can't believe it passed me by! Cheers siegfried, I'll give it a miss. Though I am quite curious about it now.

siegfried -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (16/4/2009 3:16:38 AM)

I can't believe my luck. I've just managed to pick up a couple of the best bargains I've come across for some time.
2 boxed sets of classic films, ten films to a set, and only $29 for each, which works out at under $3 per film.
They're a mixed bag, with some real beauties along with a few others that frankly look pretty uninspiring. The ones I'm really looking forward to are:
Life With Father - William Powell, Irene Dunne and Elizabeth Taylor (Dir: Michael Curtiz)
A Farewell To Arms (1933) - Helen Hayes, Gary Cooper (Dir: Frank Borzage)
Penny Serenade - Irene Dunne, Cary Grant (Dir: George Stevens)
Meet John Doe - Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck (One of Capra's best.)
My Favorite Brunette - Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Peter Lorre (Dir: Elliott Nugent)
Snows Of Kilimanjaro - Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Susan Hayward (Dir: Henry King)
The Terror - Karloff (Dir: Roger Corman)
The Red House - Edward G Robinson (Dir: Delmer Daves)
Night Train To Munich - Rex Harrison, Margaret Lockwood, Naunton Wayne, Basil Radford (Dir: Carol Reed - On a par with The Lady vanishes.)
D.O.A. - Edmond O'Brien (Dir: Rudolph Mate)
Cast A Dark Shadow - Dirk Bogarde, Margaret Lockwood, Kathleen Harrison (Dir: Lewis Gilbert)

That's me taken care of  for the next couple of weeks.

Its been a good few years since I saw this. But I did think it was overly schmalzy. Then again it is Capra I guess.

Still sounds like an excellent set of films.

elab49 -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (16/4/2009 12:28:07 PM)

I can't wait to see how you take the weirdness that is The Red House [:D] I don't quite agree with your comment on Night Train to Munich, but that is only a reflection on how highly I judge Lady Vanishes, rather than thinking anything bad about the excellent Night Train [:)]

AngryDude92 -> RE: CLASSIC FILMS I HAVE JUST PURCHASED (16/4/2009 12:50:37 PM)

Just got my hands on Pandora's Box[;)]

And a rather nice Charlie Chan Chanthology
