Not sure when it's released here - but there are ways to see it I believe!

The Fog (Rupert Wainwright's 2005 version) is interesting: giving you backstory on Blake's men and their Leper's plight. Still set in Antonio Bay, but not exactly 200 years on from the murderous pillaging of the original. Full of cheap frights and signposted scares, this adds little to the party of crap remakes out there.

There's even a scene in the morgue where a body gets up from under a cloth!

But, the little boy finds a handmirror on the beach instead of a piece of psychotic driftwood, the cast are younger and "sexier" and of course the part of Stevie Wayne is played with no acting talent whatsoever. (Where's the sultry voice???)

Worse still is the acting of the leading teens. Really crap this I have to say! The lead girl ends up snogging Blake and going "back to the future" or something or nothing. Oh and she falls in a big watery pit in the boathouse to find Malone's Journal.

It doesn't even begin with a salty old seadog and his young boys on the beach like the excellent ghost story from Carpenter.

Great SFX of course, but no tension, the build up is non-existant and the obvious 15 rating prohibits decent shocks in favour of getting in the younger punters.

In a word - SHITE!

mikkydub -> John Carpenter should be embarressd (6/3/2006 9:46:37 AM)

A pathetic remark of a classy chiller. the end effects are cheap and why does everyone get thrown through glass? This should be a cert 12A. And why oh why the sloppy romantic link at the end? a total waste of my money and time. suger coated, flimsy, stereotype cast rubbish. Does not deserve a nationwide cinema release. Watch the original insted. Bigger scares and better effects on Buffy.

Caster -> Pretty lame (6/4/2006 11:09:34 AM)

But not the worst film I've ever seen. The ending at least tried to be different (the extra star is for the shot of Grace in her undies).

CIW -> FOG (28/10/2008 2:06:13 AM)

Not a bad film overall but it is a bit too similar to the original. Also this movie has one of the worst DVD commentaries, the director just basically describes what is going on in each scene, rathe than tell us anything interesting about the shooting of the film.

Carfax -> One star is generous.... (7/4/2012 12:28:43 PM)

It's absolute bollocks......

The Fog (2005)

The second remake in the same year for some of Carpenter's old classics and it doesn't seem like a lesson was learnt.

The age old saying of less is more goes begging yet again folks. This glossy remake simply offers nothing that the original doesn't offer in a better way. There are no real thrills, chills or scares anyway in this extremely poor remake. Not to say that the original was really scary, it wasn't, but it had great atmosphere and more importantly was for an older audience.

Yep you guessed it, this overly long remake is a PG-13 cert...oh good grief. The plot is of course nothing terribly scary, an old spooky sea yarn, but at least try for some genuine thrills and a creepy atmosphere. All you get is a pretty blonde boring teen screaming a lot, a token black guy, long drawn out effects which don't add anything and worse fog effects than the original!.

Some of the effects are nice admittedly but they aren't really needed, its like the plot, it just delves way too deep and goes on too long when it doesn't have to. A typical effect that shows the over the top nature of the production is the tsunami looking wave of fog that approaches the 'Seagrass'.

Despite the plot being too long it still manages to not make a huge amount of sense right at the end. The ghost effects at the end are also laughable. A complete and utter mistake for all involved, could have been decent if made correctly but it wasn't. Devoid of anything remotely interesting or even slightly scary/spooky.
