tallaght24 -> Absolute bollox!! (16/3/2009 11:36:19 PM)

After saw 2 & 3 Darren Lynn Boussman probably thought be could so no wrong! Well boy of fucking boy was he wrong?!?! This is pretentious shite! Mr Boussman has his head so far up his own arse it's a wonder where he starts and ends. I havent seen overblown wank like this since Southland Tales, which the less said about that the better!

lukeynemo -> Not an opera, but still Rocks! (18/5/2009 12:10:28 PM)

Empire are a bit slow on this one...

FOUR STARS

In a future where a corpoation called GeneCo seems to rule, organs are being cosmetically changed in elective surgeries. It's expnsive, but there are payment plans. If you can't keep up, then the company's boss (Paul Sorvino) will send the Repo man (Anthony Head) to take the organs back.

However, Repo man has an unaware daughter (Spy Kid, Alexa Vega). She has a dehabilitating disease and he does all he can to keep her away from his dark life, even going so far as locking her in the house. Naturally, she escapes. Then all hell breaks loose as she discoves all about GeneCo and the evil that orbits around it.

On top of that, the heirs to GeneCo are fighting as to who will take the company over once daddy dies. One of these is played by Paris Hilton, who unsuprisingly proves to be the film's weak link, both in singing and general performance. Anthony Head proves an arresting presence and powerful singer, and Paul Sorvino has a simply astonishing, Baratonesque vocal ability. The real surprise, however, is Alexa Vega. Switching from conventional musical style to rock n roll- sometimes even in the same song- she is more than capable of keeping up with the rest of the more experienced cast.

Criticism? The sound is occasionally badly mixed, with the choral section occasionally being far too quiet on certain tracks, and the backing music sometimes lacks gravitas when asked to compete with the cast's vocals. And Paris Hilton is a simply appalling singer, as the Director seems to have realised as her vocals are kept to a minimum and have clearly been heavily edited and redressed in the sound booth.

But this is a great musical (not actually an opera, as the title suggests). Powerful, violent, funny, sad and poignant. Buy it.

colmMICHAEL -> Strange (30/12/2009 8:24:07 PM)

It's strange that Empire haven't reviewed it yet. Anyway, this movie is awesome and is way underrated
