I doubt there'll be much appetite for this here, Shool, but it's definitely on topic. Other than DNA staffers, the only person who's seen the forthcoming Dredd film is the character's creator, John Wagner. In Empire's September issue, Wagner's assessment of DNA's hastily assembled and unpolished first cut of the film was markedly equivocal. Wagner doesn't describe Garland and Travis's rough cut as shite, he doesn't compare it to Citizen Kane either. He describes what he was shown as 'the hi-octane version' of his creation. More recently, he's expressed his hope that 'they've corrected some of the problems that existed in the first cut' and that he 'wish(ed) ... the budget had been a little greater'*. Wagner's gone on record numerous times saying he doesn't really give a sh*t how his character or the strip looks, reserving his praise for artists (like Carlos Ezquerra and Cam Kennedy) who share his ability to tell a story well. It seems unlikely then, that Wagner's frustrated because all the special effects shots and colour correction work weren't completed in the assembly cut he's seen. It's telling that the only public criticism of 1995's codpiece-heavy attrocity that Wagner has uttered was made via his recollection of telling Cannon he was 'filming the wrong script'**. DNA's decision to make Dredd (2012) a stripped-down action film appears to have been determined by the level of financing at their disposal, rather than because they considered gunplay to be the source material's strong suit. As such, it's pointless to give them grief for all the things their film won't be, but; if the man who knows better than anyone else in the world how to tell a Judge Dredd story thinks something's lacking, it would be perverse not to pay attention. * http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=185324088154090&id=22334044612]] ** http://www.2000ad.nu/classof79/website.htm]http://www.2000ad.nu/classof79/website.htm
