ace14 -> RE: Cox in The Hobbit? (17/11/2009 8:11:17 AM)

I like the sound of Cox and Gleeson as Dwarves and would like to put forward another actor who I think would make a good Dwarf, it is against type though and I can see some on here slating it, but here goes;

James Gandolfini

I am prepared for the inevitable Tony Soprano doesn't belong in Middle Earth, but I think its casting of this sort that could surpirse and delight in equal measure

And, seeing as there is several Dwarves within the story anyone else got any ideas for the other Dwarves

Brian Blessed is surely a no brainer and coming screaming out of leftfield is the new chunkier, weirder, beardier Joaquin Phoenix. Take away the shades, plonk a dwarf hat on him, give him an axe and boom! Jobs a good un'

If that didn't work on screen I'd eat my Penguin pop up guide to Middle Earth!

What could it be?

Brian Cox and Brendan Gleeson for dwarves sounds like an amazing plan but please for the love of Christ don't cast Brian Blessed as anything. [sm=893banghead-thumb.gif]

If this announcement is just about fucking blue ray editions of the trilogy I will be so pissed off... I want some proper news!

gumgum2804 -> RE: Ian McKellan says "read the script and shooting in June..." (21/1/2010 12:26:57 PM)

Just been listening to an interview with Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, Skins, A Single Man) on the Guardian Film Weekly podcast and he said his next film was a big production but that he was contractually unable to talk about it.

Tenuous I know but I reckon he'd make a great Bilbo and he's soon to be seen in Clash of the Titans so his cache as an actor is certainly on the rise.

Sotto Voce -> RE: Ian McKellan says "read the script and shooting in June..." (21/1/2010 2:27:15 PM)

I want Tom Baker to be in it.
Please.

The Hooded Man -> RE: Ian McKellan says "read the script and shooting in June..." (21/1/2010 2:47:11 PM)

Nicholas Hoult is Spider-Man.

That sounds more on it. Can't see his twatty little face as Bilbo and neither do I want to. Horrid choice!

While it's good to get the extra time to make it as good as possible I can't say I'm not disappointed. My spidey sense is also tingling so I hope that for whatever reason, this isn't a precursor to the production being abandoned. Why not use the time to reinstate Jackson as director, where he belongs. I do love Del Toro and have faith in him but his track record in Hollywood films is not great. Either Jackson back in or shoot that thing in Spanish! Wishful thinking I know…

Invader_Ace -> RE: THE HOBBIT (26/1/2010 7:32:46 PM)

I don't have a problem with the choice of director or even delays.  I just don't like the whole two film epic-it-up aproach.  Yes, LOTR was epic and brill, but for me The Hobbit works in an entirely different way.  Just give us a 2 hour tops, rockin' adventure film.

Sort of with you on that. If all of the 3 LOTR books could fit into single movies so fantastically well then why does a much shorter and simpler narrative deserve a 4/5 hour running time? But then again the though of getting to go back to Middle Earth for two years in a row is certainly a very appealing one! Surely it will be an expanded take on the Hobbit in order to set up a fluid cinematic transition to Fellowship of the Ring. The Necromancer will surely be touched upon more and I imagine Aragorn will probably be set up in it. Saruman also could be introduced in such a way to further establish his and Gandalf’s roles in Middle Earth during that period of it’s history.

Invader_Ace -> RE: THE HOBBIT (27/1/2010 6:54:06 PM)

I know that hey intend to fill it out with Tolkien's appendixes and notes and so-on.  Which is better than them just making things up, although, there will probably be a bit of that too.  I just don't think it is needed. The producesr are clearly trying to make it a sort of LOTR 2 type affair, when personally I don't think that's how The Hobbit should be.

It's sort of retro fitting the original simple tale to fit the template of what came after (went before!) depending on how you look at it.

Perhaps the delay might also have an impact on shooting it in S3D. Jackson is obviously very much sold on it with his upcoming take on Tintin and supposed LOTR conversions but it has been reported that Del Toro was not so keen. I think given the public response to Avatar, not to mention its performance at the box office, this discussion will step up a few notches. I was completely enamoured with the level of immersion into Pandora that Avatar conveyed, so I would champion a decision to shoot Middle Earth in this fashion.

What with Bond 23 all but cancelled I feel like my rather pessimistic prediction for the fate of the Hobbit will be announced before too long. Seriously hope I'm wrong but have always had a feeling that this would never make it to the screen...[:@]

Sad, but given the problems at MGM, maybe not a shock. Does this mean Jackson does it?

Yeah, while maybe not this news exactly I was wholeheartedly expecting a major (negative) announcement regarding the Hobbit after the Bond 23 news. To be perfectly honest I really was expecting a Halo statement saying the project had been cancelled. This is sad news but I wonder if it won't do the film a service in the long run. GDT's Spanish language films have been, without exception, brilliant but I just leave his english movies felling hollow. The Hellboy books are probably my favourite graphic novels ever and for me he got that completely wrong and I certainly wouldn't want to see that happen here! If Jackson steps in I'll be happy. But I still wouldn't be surprised if we do see a complete cancellation statement before long. I've always had a funny feeling on this getting to the screen...

Marwood -> RE: nope (1/6/2010 9:43:46 AM)

I think it's most likely either Jackson will direct himself or the film will be pushed back or put on hold indefinitely while another director is brought on and MGM solve their problems.

Disappointed Del Toro left but totally understandable given the number of other projects he has in development. I think at this stage to get it underway and released when WB want it will be impossible unless Jackson directs; that would make sense as he's worked alongside Del Toro on the films and been involved with the pre-production work so presumably he could step into the breach without any real difficulty. However the question is whether he actually wants to; he said way back that he wasn't really up to it but I don't believe he has any other projects as director lined up right now so perhaps he would have the time, just needs the inclination.

If Jackson doesn't direct then all the work he and Del Toro did could be for nothing as bringing in a new director may mean starting over and causing further delays and expense. On the other hand a yes-man could be brought in to just get onto it with what's been done but the danger there is of a workmanlike film and the feeling that the director is just a puppet for the producers.

Think of Return of The Jedi; Richard Marquand was the hired gun but George was all over that one - the transition in tone and general kiddie flavour (bloody Ewoks) was a precursor to the crap George threw into the prequels.

I doubt Jackson would "do a Lucas" on the Tolkien saga but to make it work you need a visionary director with passion for the project - not a competent but bland director who's there because they need someone quick and are paying well (I'm looking at you Ratner). Therefore to utilise the pre-prod work already done and get this thing underway as soon as MGM can resolve their shit then Jackson is the logical choice...if he wants to do it now.

jobloffski -> RE: nope (1/6/2010 10:13:37 AM)

The film business is, like, risky and all, but it IS a business and I can't for the life of me see why MGM haven't been able to negotiate a special deal isolating Bond and The Hobbit from their troubles as GUARANTEED money makers that would allow them to pay off some of their debts.

Maybe I'm just being thick as duck turds, but the GUARANTEE of of a couple of Billion box office (and other income) from these two projects would, could and should act as a massive bargaining chip in any money wrangling, surely?

Marwood -> RE: nope (1/6/2010 10:51:53 AM)

Don't think you're being thick Job but as you mentioned this is business and given the economic climate I don't think anyone's really prepared to risk anything - even if it does seem like a slam dunk.

The sharks are in the water for MGM and I'm sure they're getting a lot of bail out options but no doubt the people making those offers want more control for less money and MGM may just be turning them down. Therefore they're holding out for better offers but frankly they may not arrive and they're just getting closer to being eaten with the Tolkien & Bond rights being sold off anyway.

I think MGM is going to collapse and Bond and Tolkien rights will find new studio homes - what that means for Daniel Craig's Bond and Peter Jackson's Hobbit films is anyone's guess.

I think he is contractually bound to direct both the 2nd Tintin film and Immortal Engines. I would happily see both of those ousted in favour of the Hobbit though!

I'd forgotten about Tintin but I was actually under the impression that he and Spielberg had filmed all 3 together and were in post production.

As for Immortal Engines I think you're incorrect - I believe like Temaraire (sp?) it's a book Jackson has the rights to and is interested in adaptating but hasn't made any concrete deals with production companies or studios to get it made. It's one of those deals where it was announced he wanted to do something with it but it could be "Peter Jackson's next film" in the same way that "Lincoln biopic will be Steven Spielberg's next film" - it's one of a few that he's juggling without making any firm decisions on but trades were saying it's "Peter Jackson's next film" because a lot of them take news like this and build it up to be more than it is.

Only one Tintin has finished principal (mo cap) photography and each has only one director. Film 1: Spielberg. Film 2: Jackson and Film 3: TBC

That’s initially what I thought about Mortal Engines (sorry, got the name wrong in my post) but there are a couple of Weta insiders here who thinks differently:

http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/2010/04/exclusive-weta-update-mortal-engines-in.html

Could be incorrect but this guy’s sources are usually pretty reliable. But I’m sure at this stage ME probably wouldn’t be too hard to pull out of. Tintin will be altogether a much trickier proposition I should think though.

Read this over at slashfilm. But I think this project is totally out of control now. I want this as much as the next guy but it’s like the rumour equivalent of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill now! It’s relentless. Just sack it off for now as it’s not coming together… at all. Give it five years; by which time the financial shenanigans will hopefully be a distant memory and it can be done properly with someone who wants to direct for the right reasons.  I wanted Jackson from the off but if he is now only stepping into the breach to protect studio interests then it’s not the most reassuring reason for him to helm this project. It’s just infuriating that they can’t sort it. If ComicCon brings no concrete news then I anticipate a Hobbit cancellation statement within months. Just a bad feeling but I’ve always had a suspicion that the Hobbit would never make it to the screen. God I hope I’m wrong! [:D]
