pauljthomas -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (22/8/2008 12:19:01 PM)

Should be another win tomorrow against Stoke & with our goalscoring record we'll be top of the league by 5pm tomorrow [;)]

Professor Moriarty -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (22/8/2008 12:51:18 PM)

As someone who'd consider themselves neutral I'd like to see Villa have a good season.  They seem to have an owner who has the right idea and who can't admire O'Neill?

Mind you I was supporting Derby last year in the Premiership as being my "local" club [:D]

matthewforan -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (22/8/2008 1:12:57 PM)

Good luck to the Villa this season, and any other season that Mo'N is in charge. Celtic fans still love him, he's a great manager and a really nice guy.

Thanks for giving us back Shaun Maloney.

I'll second that. As a Leicester fan I'd rather piss myself at a family wedding than support Villa.
However, as I've witnessed the genius of Mo'N for many season, I can't help but wish him well and wish Villa good luck for the season and in Europe.
The fact he also likes playing home-grown players is also an added reason. He was right about Gareth Barry, he played that one brilliantly IMO, and his refusal to get drawn into petty mind-games, childish behaviour, snide comments and the unsettling of players is another thing I like about him. I'm envious of you for the good years ahead he'll give you.
He should have been England manager but that's another story.

I'm desperately trying not to tempt fate - knowing us we'll probably draw against 'em, but yeah, part of me is expecting quite a high scoring result come the end of the match.

I gotta echo Professor Moriartys' comments (Great username btw - 'tis nice to see a Holmes fan) about Randy Lerner - As someone who was a bit worried when he took control, I've now got no worries whatsoever, and think he's a brilliant guy [:D]

Oh and jonson - You aint the only one who thinks that O'Neil should be the England Manager - once he's achieved all that he can at Villa, then I think The FA should come back begging for him to sort everything out.

ray_likethefish -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (22/8/2008 4:22:43 PM)

I love that Villa are buying up talented british players and building a quality attacking team around them. O'Neil has done wonders for the club. I hope they do well in Europe, they deserve it i think.

I'm never posting a pre-match prediction again [:(]

Hardcore Raver -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (24/8/2008 1:14:49 PM)

Our defence really needs to sort itself out. Hopefully it's just a case of taking time to gel, but unless it improves then we will struggle just to equal last season.

Bang on - Last season we scored a hell of a lot of goals, yet conceded even more. I know it's early days so far, but the same is happening again - Scored 6 conceded 5 - So far only Stoke have conceded that amount of goals this season.

Like you said, hopefully it's just a case of early season lack of form - hopefully it's not gonna be indicative of the kinda problems we had last season.

Hardcore Raver -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (24/8/2008 1:31:36 PM)

Well I'd like to think with Friedel, Young and Shorey all new to the team, it's just a case of getting to know each other, though I would have expected better from Laursen and Davies who looked pretty good together last season before Davies' injury. I suppose we do still have Cueller to come into the team, but already I'm less optimistic than I was before the season started.

HIroProtagonist -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (24/8/2008 1:37:36 PM)

Undoubtedly, on paper we shouldn't have a problem - but it does worry me. If you look at last season we scored 71 goals - Only Man U and Arsenal scored more - which is obviously good, but if you look at how many we conceded - 51 that's more than anyone else in the top 8.

Well.........that went well[:@]

tftrman -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (26/8/2008 9:13:46 AM)

It's all your fault!! Looks like it'll be the same as last season then - score a shedload and concede a shedload.

It aint my fault O'Neil hasn't been able to sort this out - Seriously though, hopefully it's just an early season thing, and it won't develop into a re-run of last season (in terms of goals conceded - I'd settle for the same amount of goals scored)

pauljthomas -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (27/8/2008 1:39:52 PM)

Milners handed in a transfer request, would still prefer SWP as he can play both wings, plus Milner couldn't cross a road. Only played well last night cos MON was watching.

That Sir, made me laugh out loud [:D]

And I gotta agree with you, I'd prefer SWP as opposed to Milner, however it looks like he's going back to City. I don't think Milner is a bad player, by any stretch of the imagination, but he definitely aint worth 10mil.

Then again, I'd quite like him to prove me wrong on that, assuming that he does in fact sign.

Given the horror that happened after my last prediction - I'm not gonna predict a score for tonight, but, hopefully, we should manage to get through - fingers crossed.

tftrman -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (28/8/2008 11:42:21 AM)

Apparently MON is going to give some of the fringe players a game tonight, such as moron harewood so don't expect too many goals!

I'd rather have Milner than SWP to be honest, he was our best player (during an admittedly poor season) when he was on loan with us. I think SWP is really shit - maybe I should put that in the unpopular opinion section!

The Hare is a quality player, I'd wager that he'll score tonight. Plus, a clean sheet would make a nice change.

Can see us winning 2-0.

tftrman -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (28/8/2008 12:45:59 PM)

Never liked him as a player and that dislike was just reinforced when he gave away that penalty away to spurs last season.

Well.......He admittedly crossed for the goal but other than that was shite. None of them played particularly well though.

HIroProtagonist -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (29/8/2008 11:31:59 AM)

Nice to see us progress through to the "Proper Stages" of the Cup - The draw is gonna take place today, so fingers crossed we get a decent draw.

As for the match, I gotta agree that it was a wee-bit dull, to say the least, but the guys got the job done, and we're through.

Spectre -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (29/8/2008 1:09:30 PM)

Milner signs for Villa:

Great news.[:D]

Hardcore Raver -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (29/8/2008 2:22:54 PM)

Great news indeed! Now we can stop playing NRC on the right wing!

Spectre -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (29/8/2008 4:29:53 PM)

MON's actually got a little bit of a selection headache in midfield now. It's nice to have the options though.

This transfer window has been great so far, and if we could bring in another striker (preferably not Kevin Doyle), then that would be the icing on the cake.

Spengler -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (31/8/2008 11:50:12 PM)

Well, we kept a clean sheet today, must be that the rest of the month is now gonna be Sunday aswell!

I honestly put most of our problems down to Carson's lack of experience last season. At the end of the day, he's not a good enough keeper. Have to say though, I've been disappointed with our conceding so far - it's like we have an aversion to 'something - 0' scorelines! Oh well, at least it happened today, but we weren't able to go on and take control of the game, which was fairly poor overall, but we had the closest chances and should have won by that respect. Looks like a draw was a fair result though - Liverpool lacking their two - man - team combo of Gerrard and Torres couldn't do anything worthy, and we weren't exactly the cat's pyjamas either, but what the hell. Our 8 game stint against the 'big four' starts with a point.

The game in midweek was a good one, and although the result wasn't great, and people say we didn't play well, we have to remember that this was a second string team - both Youngs, Laursen, Shorey, Carew and others were all left out in favour of fringe players, and we still bossed the game. The work between Salifou and Routledge was wonderful to watch, and the entire game was completely what I expected.

STILL no place in the England squad for Gabby or Ashley though [:@]

I just can not understand this at all.

HIroProtagonist -> RE: Aston Villa '08/09 - The European Adventure (1/9/2008 11:39:14 AM)

So there's definitely some positives to be taken from yesterdays match, in that we didn't concede anything. We also didn't lose (which I thought we would), and a point is better than nothing. The negative being that it was as boring as hell - but if we can do that against the "Big 4" and not lose, hell I'll take that [:D]

I noticed that this morning, and I gotta say I'm suprised - they're both decent enough to at least get into the squad, if not the starting team.

As for Carson - my family are all WBA fans, so I'm glad that all the stuff they said about him last season, I'm gonna be able to throw back at 'em this season [:)]

Liverpool are a two man team. Shut down Torres and Gerrard, and they've got shit all. They were without Gerrard from the start and Torres limped off after 20 minutes. Thus they did nothing.

I will hate Liverpool for the Gareth Barry episode until they sack Rafa Benitez. I will hate Benitez forever.

As I said in the England thread:

So Jimmy Bullard is called up, and yet still no place for Gabby Agbonlahor, Ashley Young et al. The Villa squad is full of deserving English players who are better than half the tosh he's got there.

Call me biased or whatever, but Glen Johnson? Wes Brown? Theo Walcott? Wayne Bridge? Matthew Upson? Stewart Downing? Jermaine Jenas? These are hardly world beaters. I've never rated any of these players, and although I do rate him, Walcott hardly ever features for his club.

And Emile Heskey? Gimme a fuckin' break. Marlon Harewood's better than Heskey. Jesus.
