kdawg -> American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (14/7/2008 2:21:31 PM)

Not only is this my favourite Werewolf movie but its one of the best for mixing Horror and Comedy to almost perfection, stunning special effects by Rick Baker have (in my opinion) never been bettered even with CGI looking better than ever.
Its the scariest wolf put on screen....not Dog Soldiers...Underworld...or Van Helsing (i hate myself for even mentioning that film) have come close.
What do you guys think?

CORLEONE -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (14/7/2008 4:09:21 PM)

Best by a mile. Only one that comes close is The Wolf Man with Lon Chaney Jnr.

DazDaMan -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (14/7/2008 11:23:58 PM)

Absolutely... but it's not my favourite.

I remember seeing this when I was a mere ten years old - and it scared the absolute fucking SHIT out of me!  Walking home from my friend's house at night was always accompanied by my watching over my shoulder for huge black hairy beasts launching themselves at my ass!

My favourite, however, would probably be The Howling.  Most werewolves are tortured, troubled human beings that don't want to be the monster that they are, but in The Howling, they were malevolent, they were vicious, they were evil, and they KNEW it.  The werewolf effects in The Howling were done by none other than The Thing's effects maestro, Rob Bottin, and as such they were more brutal and terrifying (to me, at least), probably since these creatures could transform whenver they felt like it - even in daylight, you weren't safe from them!  The monster in American Werewolf looked like a big dog in the end (although still fantastic in the brief glances you got of the creature), but these ones were just that bit more terrifying since they were always seen in poor lighting - you couldn't see what was coming for you until it was breathing right down your neck....

Dog Soldiers is another firm fave.  It's funny, very gruesome, and altogether just a great little horror film that doesn't need flashy transformation sequences or CGI.  Plus, if you read up on werewolf lore, they were a bit more "classical" - half-human, half-wolf monsters.  I can't understand why they're trying to do a sequel that totally confounds the ending of the original! I would have to agree that The Howling is my favourite out of the two, although An American Werewolf.... is a superb horror movie also. The twist at the end of The Howling is great although the Werewolf itself (fluffy monster) is a let down.

Wow - I could have written that! I remembers seeing it on VHS at a friend's house (bit older than 10 though), and being massively spooked on the way home...[:)]

Halloweenfreak -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (15/7/2008 7:03:04 PM)

Its a good film the best scene is the transformation created by Rick Baker a fuckin legend...but I also think that The Howling is still better, more transformations and more werewolfs and violence. When you see the wereowolf in American Werewolf in London it kinda looks stupid as its to fat is certain scenes

dark crystal -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (15/7/2008 7:20:51 PM)

AAWIL is actually my favourite horror film ever. I love the mixture of graphic horror, comedy and romance and the film has never dated. Just brilliant and the spectacular transformation scene still looks fantastic today.

The Company of Wolves is probably my second favourite werewolf film. A gothic, beautifully shot and narrated slant on the old Little Red Riding Hood story.

I never really liked The Howling that much. I guess I've always found it rather slow and less suspenseful than the two aforementioned films.

Halloweenfreak -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (16/7/2008 5:12:26 PM)

There's more to the Howling that AAWIL there's more action, werewolfs there's more horror the transformation is not to bad I think AAWIL's transformation is still better

darkarius -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (16/7/2008 8:47:00 PM)

certainly my favourite werewolf film.  As already said, the transformation IMO has never been out done.  The humour in it is totally spot on. (Jacks returning conversations, David changing in the cinema, the soundtrack being made up of songs which are all to do with the moon)  Its brilliant.  Plus its got Jenny Agutter in it.  and we all know it guaranteed to have some sort of semi/nudity in it [:D]

Halloweenfreak -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (17/7/2008 9:19:05 AM)

Got a great point there my friend [;)]

mackey -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (18/7/2008 8:01:29 PM)

Most definitely the best werewolf movie, absolutely brilliant.  I remember staying up to watch this as a youngster with my dad asleep on the couch and it scared the shite out of me.  Excellent performances, quirky humour and amazing special effects - I've still to see anything that matches the transformation scene, pure genius.  I'm a big fan of The Howling too but it just doesn't come close in my opinion. Any recent attempts at the werewolf movie have been woeful I think, hope the new Wolfman film changes that.

Seth_Gecko -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (22/7/2008 12:26:01 PM)

One of my favourite films of all time and  my favourite horror film of all time just love it. Everything about it.

kdawg -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (22/7/2008 4:38:39 PM)

Having seen how they created the transformation...then rewatching the film...i so expected the scene to lose all impact....to my complete surprise...it did not.....genius!

Seth_Gecko -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (23/7/2008 1:01:45 PM)

Definatly not it keeps it up right to the end. I like the bit were hes sitting in the cinema watching a porn talking to his decomposing mate and the the people he mutalated the night before genius.

broonie -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (23/7/2008 1:51:37 PM)

Definitly, the best werewolf film. Best ever transformation as well, CGI efforts aren't even worth licking the wolfs toenails! One of John Landis ' best films IMO after Trading Places.

Noelg25 -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (23/7/2008 2:08:35 PM)

I first saw this movie when I was about 8yrs old. To be honest I wasnt even scared of it. I just loved everything about the movie. Especially when the transformation took place that was amazing. I havent watched it since then but I have been meaning to. Funnily enough I do remember alot of the scenes. The scene where he eats the deer, the scene where his dead mate visits him in various places, i.e hospital and cinema and each time he visits him his body and face becomes more deteriorated which I thought was cool. Another scene that sticks in the back of my mind is towards the end where he turns into a wolf in the cinema and runs amock in central london causing buses and cars to crash and people getting killed. Blimey, do I really remember that much from all those years ago? Maybe I watched it more than once at the time.

I do agree about Dog Soldiers. I really enjoyed that movie. Purely because there was no CGI involved at all. Neil Marshall just knew what he was doing with that film. There was nothing wrong with that film at all. It was just brilliant. Poor old Spoon though, they didnt have to eat him in such a manner.

Fluke Skywalker -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (25/7/2008 10:43:42 AM)

American Werewolf in London is simply one of the best horror films ever made and my favourite werewolf movie. The transformation, that brilliantly surreal rolling dream sequence with the werewolf Nazis, the comedy elements and the genuinely moving ending. It's a classic

lol...what a line...but dont forget to do it in a Geordie accent: "A hope a give you the fucking shits, ya fucking wimp!" (and I have seen Geordies type like that no word of a lie)

the upcoming blu-ray (U.S and UK versions are the same) is worth a double-dip just for the new 'Beware the Moon' documentary.

Harley Quinn -> RE: American Werewolf in London..best Werewolf movie? (25/9/2009 9:11:39 PM)

I had a babysitter who let me watch it with her, scared the crap out of me.

I was actually thinking of re-watching, but am too chicken to watch it alone.

Not really American Werewolf-related but FX God Rick Baker recently created this 'real' Popeye!

That's the plan [;)]!

Great film, and I agree with Corleone, this and The Wolf Man are the best werewolf movies.
