luvinfilms -> huh? (5/2/2006 1:06:34 PM)

such an underrated movie. the suspense is wonderful. the action is great. one hell of a storyline. why do people think this is so bad when it blatantly isnt. it didn't deserve 2 stars anyway....

coolrex16 -> It was too good to be true (8/3/2006 1:11:53 AM)

The sheer thought of a faithful movie adaptation of the classic 1996 survival horror video game is just awesome, too awesome? Apparently so.
What we get is something that couldn't be any more different. It's good, but should be better. Instead of a slow burning, tense, mansion based, zombie epic we are given some kind of futuristic, comic book which concentrates only on 'babes with guns' and special effects. It could have been more, but that's not saying it's entirely a bad thing. In some ways it's better, instead of tedious puzzle solving, back tracking and everything that was bad about the games, it's replaced with guns, shooting and more guns. A very enjoyable few hours with lots of zombies, decent special effects, minimal scares and Milla in a very small red dress.
Don't expect perfection, just good, bullet riddled fun.

Horrorguru -> RESIDENT IDIOT (11/1/2008 11:23:15 PM)

im a huge fan of capcoms RESIDENT EVIL games franchise. so it was with high hopes i read that GEORGE A ROMERO was going to direct the movie version of the game. that was 1998.
Nothing happened.
Finally RESIDENT EVIL was in the theaters and it was with much disgust i found that it was directed by schlock master PAUL W S ANDERSON and the film bore little resembalance to the game series it was based on. Bloodless spineless PG13 pap for none game fans. what a let down. to compound my misery i got a hold of Romeros origianl RESIDENT EVIL script and if it had of been made
then RESIDENT EVIL THE MOVIE would of been brilliant.
RESIDENT EVIL a corporate cinematic turd aimed at non horror non gamer fans.

lynnshep -> (19/1/2008 3:21:46 PM)

Good ride, but not great.

dgribble -> RE (20/2/2008 6:56:53 PM)

Bad dialouge have you seen Serenity, Bad acting have you seen Battlefeild earth, also whats wrong with a movie that is'nt too gory your a critic not QT, plus it was a low budget movie, and as for Milla Jovovich in the red dress, its a homage to Ada from one of the games, and some of the best movies made have'nt had plots either.

lewey T -> Enjoyable (27/3/2008 11:32:28 AM)

I liked this film. It had a good game to film transformation. although the effects are very old fashioned, the storyline was full of thrills which dragged the quality of the film up.

Horrorguru -> Resident evil kind of? (19/7/2008 3:30:15 PM)

The film has a great ending, and the beaver shot is nice, aside from that this film sucks ass juice. it's an embarresment to gamers who loved the creepiness of the games (you will be dissapointed).
its an insult to romeros creatures (zombies are crap in this cackfest)
There is no blood, no plot, no point. a wasted opportunity to do something brilliant with the best survival horror game franchise.
Paul W.S. anderson should be ashamed for writing such a shitfest.

darkraven28 -> So, the critic says... (23/4/2010 11:00:44 PM)

That Anderson relies on suggestion rather than shock and will not follow in Romero's footsteps. And it gets 2 stars. Yet any other review would commend a film that ISN'T full of shocks and which relies on and properly uses suggestion. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

And honestly, people need to start giving Anderson a harder time for the same fucking ending he has been using for 15 years, outside of Soldier and Death Race. You know, the sequel begger one.

AlexObscene -> (26/9/2011 1:33:23 PM)

I love the Resident Evil movie franchise,i dont understand why it gets so much hate and why Paul gets all the hate.Me and my fiance love Resident Evil,both the films and games.

the film man -> Resident Evil Review (26/1/2012 5:21:01 PM)

Like other video game adapations, Resident Evil is loud, violent, formulaic, and cheesy.

Phubbs -> RE: Resident Evil Review (26/11/2012 5:01:40 PM)

Resident Evil (2002)

There was much trepidation when this came to bloom way back in 02, an adaptation of the highly popular zombie horror videogame franchise? hmmm. Anderson's first foray into the adaptation world after some reasonable films like 'Soldier' and 'Event Horizon', his CV didn't look too shabby but previous attempts at this sort of genre proved dismal.

Amazingly enough this first offering in what is now an overly ridiculous 'Matrix' 'Blade' 'Underworld' monster mash mess is actually quite good and sticks to the original formula. It all kicks off inside the well known mansion but in an imaginative spin delves deep underground to the secret Umbrella facility. Here we get a very admirable 'Aliens' type thriller as a team of commandos battle to survive against a sadistic mega computer that runs the facility and of course lots of undead creatures/monsters.

So the whole film is contained within the underground labs instead of roaming the mansion which at first seemed wrong. Maybe they could of done with some mansion action but it actually works well. Later adaptation 'Doom' does seem somewhat similar in premise though, slight case of concept rip methinks.

Naturally the effects are mostly CGI for the creatures and they do now look rather crappy, very obvious. Of course you can't pan a film for that but the CGI hasn't dated well, where as sets and overall look for the film isn't too bad, zombies look a bit childish though. It is nice to see most of the videogame nasties in the film though, Anderson certainly did well not to stray far from the source yet add to it as well. Zombie dogs which aren't fully CGI but real dogs with makeup is a nice touch, a hint of the crows and 'Lickers' which are good n scary...accept for the fact they are all fully CGI. The 'Red Queen' computer character is a good addition to the fray and quite eerie at times also 'your're all going to die down here'.

This film is a welcome presentation of the franchise and shows what can be done if done properly. Its still mind boggling to me that the film is actually a reasonably scary horror flick! there are quite a few good jumpy moments and certainly no hesitation with blood. A creation of slow building dread and suspense is well handled throughout, alongside some nifty visual moments and a good if slightly cliched bunch of commandos all adds up to a darn fun ride.

Yes you can see many steals from other similar films (the usual tough bunch of soldiers taken down one by one) and the characters are all generic copies stemmed from a certain Cameron film but the fact its not a kiddie flick and watered down is fantastic and astonishing. There is no silly slow motion nonsense, no over the top set pieces, actually Jovovich plays it for real and isn't a 'Selene' clone from 'Underworld'...yet.

Probably the best of the series if you ask me, and it was an Anderson film!!. Its formulaic and cliched but still provides enough punch to do what its suppose to do...pretty much like the 'Doom' film.
